Chapter 7: The Trap at Room 18

“Absolutely not.””

Officer Bennett's voice cut through the living room as I showed him the latest message.

I turned toward him.

“That's my daughter in that photograph.””

“And we're going to get her back.””

“Then let me go.””

“Not alone, Mr. Reed. Whoever sent that message is trying to control what happens next. If you walk into a meeting without a plan, you could put your daughter in greater danger.””

I looked at Nia's frightened face on my screen.

Her hands were folded in her lap. A seat belt crossed her chest. Behind her, I could see the window of a black SUV and a blurry reflection of the person taking the photograph.

I enlarged the image.

There was something on the reflection's wrist.

A silver watch.

Daniel's watch.

My brother had been watching my daughter for days, perhaps longer. He knew where she went to school. He knew which roads I traveled to work. He knew how to reach into my life and make me feel helpless.

I wasn't going to let him do it anymore.

“Officer,” I said, “I have an idea.””

Twenty minutes later, Rebecca arrived with a folder containing copies of the evidence recovered from storage unit 214. She had already contacted the trust administrator and arranged for the bank to preserve the suspicious transaction records.

She placed the folder on the coffee table.

“If Daniel wants the original letter, we need to understand why he believes it can still hurt him,” she said.

“Because it connects him to the stolen money.””

“Possibly. But the declaration may also contain information that could be relevant to the investigation into Elena's death.””

I looked at the photograph of Nia.

“Then we'll give him what he wants.””

Rebecca's expression hardened.

“We'll give him a copy, under the officers' direction. You will not make an agreement with him, and you will not hand over the original evidence.””

Officer Bennett explained that the police would coordinate the meeting and attempt to locate Nia without provoking Daniel into moving her again. I agreed to follow their instructions.

For the first time since the messages began, I felt as though we had a chance.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered on speaker.

“Marcus,” he said, sounding almost cheerful.

“I assume you've received my messages.””

“I have.””

“Good. Bring Elena's letter to Room 18 at the motel. Nine o'clock tonight. Come alone.””

“What happens to Nia?””

“She goes home.””

“Where is she now?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“You've threatened her, Daniel. You forged my signature. You stole from her trust. What makes you think I'll believe anything you say?””

He sighed as though I were being unreasonable.

“Because I'm your brother.””

I stared at the phone.

“You stopped being my brother when you decided my daughter was something you could use.””

His voice hardened.

“Careful, Marcus. You're not the only person who can lose everything tonight.””

The call ended.

Rebecca looked at me.

“He's desperate.””

“Good.””

“Desperation can make people unpredictable.””

I glanced toward the staircase, where Mason and Chloe sat together.

“Then let's make sure he doesn't get another chance.””

At eight thirty, I left the house with Officer Bennett's team coordinating the operation. I carried a folder containing a carefully prepared copy of Elena's declaration. The original remained secured with the investigators.

The motel sat beside a highway lined with closed diners and gas stations. A flickering sign advertised weekly rates. The parking lot smelled of wet asphalt and gasoline.

Room 18 was at the far end of the building.

I approached the door alone, exactly as Daniel had demanded, while the officers positioned themselves according to their plan.

I knocked twice.

The door opened.

Vanessa stood inside.

Her makeup was smeared, her hair disheveled. She looked as if she hadn't slept in days.

“Where's Nia?”” I asked.

“Marcus, please come inside.””

I remained at the threshold.

“Where is my daughter?””

Vanessa looked over her shoulder.

“She's not here.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then where is she?””

“Daniel took her somewhere else. He said he needed to make sure you brought the letter before he returned her.””

I stepped into the room.

A single lamp illuminated the bed. A paper cup sat on the nightstand beside an open laptop. The screen displayed scanned financial records and a photograph of Elena's declaration.

“You knew he wasn't bringing her here,” I said.

“I thought he would.””

“You told the police you would help us find her.””

“I am helping you.””

“By bringing me to an empty room?””

Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.

“Listen to me. Daniel has been calling Richard all night. They're arguing about something. I heard Daniel say the police had discovered the transfers.””

I pulled my arm away.

“Why didn't you tell the officers?””

“Because Daniel threatened Mason and Chloe.””

I stared at her.

“He threatened his own nephew and niece?””

“He said if I betrayed him, Richard would make sure we lost everything.””

She began to cry.

“I thought I could fix this before anyone got hurt.””

“You had weeks to fix it. You could have told me about the money. You could have told me about the guardianship papers. You could have protected Nia.””

“I know.””

“No, Vanessa. You know you're in trouble. That's not the same thing.””

She lowered her head.

For a moment, I felt a flicker of pity. Then I remembered my daughter standing in the kitchen with a cold plate while Vanessa's children ate at the table.

Pity wasn't going to bring Nia home.

I set the folder on the nightstand.

“This is what Daniel wants.””

Vanessa looked at it.

“Is it the original?””

“No.””

She let out a shaky breath.

“He'll know.””

“Then he can explain to the police why he wants it so badly.””

Her face drained of color.

Before she could answer, someone knocked on the door.

Three sharp blows.

Vanessa froze.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

“Open up.””

Daniel.

I moved toward the door, but Vanessa caught my wrist.

“Marcus, wait.””

“Why?””

She looked at me with naked fear.

“Because he's not alone.””

The door opened before I could respond.

Daniel stepped inside, wearing a dark jacket and the silver watch I had seen in the photographs.

Behind him stood Richard Cole.

My business partner looked directly at me and smiled.

“Marcus,” Richard said.

“It's been a long time since we had a private conversation.””

I stared at him.

“You were involved in Elena's accident.””

His smile disappeared.

Daniel shut the door.

“Let's not start with accusations,” he said.

“We have a family matter to resolve.””

I looked from my brother to the man who had helped me bury my wife.

“Where is my daughter?””

Richard pulled a chair away from the table and sat down.

“She's alive,” he said.

“And she will remain that way as long as everyone cooperates.””

Daniel opened the folder.

He flipped through the pages, then looked up at me.

“This isn't the original.””

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“Where is it?””

“Somewhere you can't reach.””

For the first time, the mask slipped completely.

Daniel slammed the folder onto the bed.

“You have no idea what you've done!””

“I know exactly what you've done. You stole from a child. You forged documents. You threatened her.””

Richard rose slowly.

“And if you want to see her again, Marcus, you're going to stop pretending you have the power to destroy us.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a photograph.

It showed Nia standing beside a chain-link fence.

Behind her was a building I recognized immediately.

The storage facility.

On the back, Richard had written a time.

*9:30 P.M.*

I looked at the clock on the wall.

It was 9:12.

Richard leaned toward me.

“Your daughter is closer than you think.””

Then Daniel whispered the words that changed everything.

“She isn't the only one who's been hiding something from you.””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“Tell him what Elena was carrying when the car crashed.””

Vanessa began to shake.

May you like

And for the first time that night, I realized the two men hadn't brought me to Room 18 merely to recover a letter.

They had brought me there to decide which one of them I would believe when the truth finally came out.
