Chapter 8: The Secret in the Wreckage
Vanessa stared at Daniel.
“I told you I didn't know.””
Richard struck the table with his palm.
“Stop lying.””
She recoiled.
I stepped between them.
“Don't touch her.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Still playing the hero, Marcus? That's what Elena liked about you. You always wanted to save everyone, even when you couldn't save yourself.””
I felt the words like a blade.
“You knew her.””
“Of course I knew her. She was married to you, and you brought her to every company event. She sat beside us while we discussed investments. She knew how the business worked.””
“Then tell me what she was carrying.””
Richard looked at Daniel.
My brother hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than either man intended.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Elena found the original transfer records. She had proof that Richard and I were moving money through Northbridge Holdings.””
“And you wanted the records destroyed.””
“We wanted to recover the money before the company collapsed,” Daniel said.
“Richard was handling the investment side. I was supposed to replace the funds before anyone noticed.””
“You used my daughter's inheritance.””
“I made a mistake.””
“You made dozens of decisions. Every transfer required another decision. Every lie required another lie.””
Daniel's face reddened.
“You think you're better than me because you built a successful company? You had everything handed to you. Dad trusted you.
Investors trusted you. Elena trusted you. Everyone believed you were the responsible one.””
“And that made you entitled to steal from a child?””
His mouth tightened.
Richard interrupted.
“We're wasting time. Marcus, give us the original declaration. Then we'll discuss Nia.””
“Tell me what happened the night Elena died.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“You've been listening to Vanessa's stories.””
“Vanessa told me you arranged for someone to tamper with Elena's car.””
Vanessa covered her face.
Daniel turned on her.
“You promised you wouldn't tell him!””
“I didn't know what happened until after!””
Richard grabbed Daniel's arm.
“Shut up.””
The two men stared at each other.
For one brief moment, they seemed less like partners than enemies trapped in the same room.
I took a step backward.
“Which one of you arranged it?””
Richard straightened his jacket.
“Your wife had a car accident. That's all.””
“Then why did you tell Vanessa to lie?””
“Because she panicked. She was at the scene, and she didn't want to be dragged into an investigation.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Were you at the scene before the ambulance arrived?””
She nodded slowly.
“Did you see Elena?””
“Yes.””
“Did she say anything?””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“She asked me to call you.””
The room seemed to shrink around me.
“What did you tell her?””
“I said I would.””
“Did you?””
She shook her head.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“Why?””
“Daniel told me not to. He said the police were already coming, and that calling you would only make everything worse.””
I could barely speak.
“My wife was lying beside a wrecked car, asking for her husband, and you decided to listen to my brother?””
“I was afraid!””
“So was she!””
Vanessa began sobbing.
I turned away before I said something I couldn't take back.
Richard took advantage of the silence.
“Marcus, whatever happened that night, it doesn't change what we're discussing now. Nia's safety depends on whether you cooperate.””
I faced him.
“You keep saying she's safe. If she's safe, bring her here.””
“Not until we have the original.””
“Then we have nothing to discuss.””
Daniel grabbed the folder and hurled it across the room.
Pages scattered over the carpet.
“You don't understand!”” he shouted.
“That declaration doesn't just expose the transfers. It exposes everything!””
Richard rounded on him.
“Stop talking!””
Daniel ignored him.
“Your wife kept a second set of records. She copied the bank statements, the emails, everything. She was going to give them to the investigators.””
“And the declaration names you both.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Yes.””
The admission hung in the air.
I had suspected the truth for days, but hearing my brother confess made it real.
“What happened to the second set of records?””
Richard reached inside his jacket.
I tensed.
He pulled out a small USB drive and held it between two fingers.
“Here.””
I stared at it.
“What's on that?””
“Enough to ruin all of us.””
“Then why show me?””
“Because your wife was smarter than any of us realized. She made a copy of the records and arranged for them to be delivered to someone else if anything happened to her.””
I remembered Elena's letter.
I wanted to tell you everything sooner, but I needed proof.
“Who received them?””
Richard smiled without warmth.
“That's what we've been trying to find out.””
Daniel looked at him sharply.
“You told me the courier never delivered them.””
“I said I couldn't confirm delivery.””
“You told me they were destroyed!””
Richard's expression changed.
I watched the two men realize they'd been lying to each other as thoroughly as they'd lied to me.
“Where is Nia?”” I demanded.
Richard slipped the USB drive back into his pocket.
“Your daughter found something before we did. Something Elena hid.””
I thought of the music box.
The first letter.
The second envelope.
“What did she find?””
Daniel looked away.
“The original declaration.””
“No,” I said.
“I have that.””
“Then you have a copy of the declaration,” Richard replied.
“The original is different.””
My heart began pounding.
“What does it contain?””
Richard glanced at Vanessa.
“Ask her.””
I turned.
Vanessa was shaking so badly that she had to grip the edge of the bed.
“Elena came to see me the day before the accident,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“You said you barely knew her.””
“I lied.””
“Why?””
“Because she told me she knew what Daniel was doing. She wanted me to help her get the records to you.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“You had a chance to tell me everything.””
“I know.””
“What did she give you?””
Vanessa looked at the door, then at Richard.
“A memory card.””
Richard lunged toward her.
I shoved him away.
He stumbled against the table, knocking the lamp to the floor.
Daniel grabbed Vanessa's arm.
“Where is it?””
She cried out.
“Let go of me!””
I pulled him back.
“Don't touch her!””
For a few seconds, all four of us struggled in the cramped room. Richard cursed. Daniel tried to reach into Vanessa's pocket. I pushed him away, and Vanessa stumbled against the wall.
Then a loud voice came from the hallway.
“Police! Open the door!””
Everyone froze.
Richard's face turned white.
Daniel looked at me with pure hatred.
“You brought them here.””
“I didn't bring them. You did this to yourselves.””
The door opened, and officers entered the room. They separated us immediately and began issuing instructions.
Richard tried to speak.
“This is a misunderstanding. We're business associates resolving a dispute.””
Officer Bennett looked at him.
“Then you'll have no objection to answering questions about the suspected financial fraud and the threats made against a minor.””
Richard said nothing.
Daniel stood motionless as another officer took the folder from the bed.
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was sitting on the floor, crying into her hands.
“Where's the memory card?”” I asked.
She raised her head.
“I hid it.””
“Where?””
“In Nia's room.””
My pulse raced.
“What?””
“Behind the frame of Elena's photograph. I thought Daniel would never look there.””
I turned toward Officer Bennett.
“We need to get back to my house.””
He nodded to another officer, who began coordinating the next steps.
As we left the motel, I looked at Richard being escorted toward a police vehicle.
He glanced at me.
“You think you've won?””
“No,” I said.
“I think my daughter deserves the truth.””
His expression hardened.
“You have no idea what that truth will cost you.””
I walked away.
At home, the officers searched Nia's room with my permission. Behind the frame of Elena's photograph, they found a tiny memory card wrapped in tissue paper.
I watched as the officer sealed it in an evidence bag.
Then my phone rang.
A number I didn't recognize.
A woman's voice spoke quietly.
“Mr. Reed? My name is Laura Bennett. I worked with your wife before she died.””
I gripped the phone.
“What do you know about Elena?””
“I was the courier she contacted. She gave me a package the day before the accident. I was supposed to deliver it to an investigator.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why not?””
“Because someone followed me. I panicked and hid the package. I've been afraid to come forward ever since.””
“Where is it now?””
There was a long pause.
Then she whispered, “In a safety deposit box under my maiden name.””
“Why are you telling me this now?””
“Because I saw the news about the threats against your daughter. And because I received a message from someone who claimed Elena's death was an accident.””
“Who sent it?””
“I don't know. But they included a photograph of the package.””
I closed my eyes.
“What was in it?””
Laura's voice dropped.
“An audio recording of the conversation that happened after Elena's car crashed.””
My heart seemed to stop.
“Can you bring it to the police?””
“Yes. Tomorrow morning.””
She hesitated.
“But, Mr. Reed, there's something you need to understand.””
“What?””
“The recording doesn't just implicate your brother and your business partner.””
I looked at the memory card in the evidence bag.
“Who else?””
May you like
Laura whispered a name.
And suddenly, every memory of the night Elena died felt like a lie.
