The Necklace Was Never Hers / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3: The Witness

The man entered without looking at anyone.

He wore a charcoal suit and carried a black leather briefcase against his side.

The ballroom doors closed behind him with a heavy click.

Grace watched him approach.

Evelyn looked terrified.

That frightened Grace more than the certificate had.

“Who is that?”” one guest whispered.

Richard didn't answer.

The man stopped beside the auction table.

He was in his early sixties, clean-shaven, with silver-rimmed glasses.

He placed the briefcase on the table.

Then he looked directly at Evelyn.

“You shouldn't have brought the necklace here.””

Evelyn's face tightened.

“You were supposed to stay away.””

The man's expression remained cold.

“I tried.””

Grace looked at Richard.

“Who is he?””

Richard swallowed.

“Daniel Mercer.””

“Your attorney?””

Richard nodded.

Daniel opened the briefcase.

Inside were several folders.

The ballroom fell silent again.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Daniel, this is not the place.””

He looked at her.

“It is exactly the place.””

She shook her head.

“You don't understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

He removed a second document.

Grace's stomach tightened.

“What is that?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Your mother's original estate file.””

Grace froze.

“My mother had an estate file?””

“Yes.””

“Why have I never seen it?””

Daniel glanced at Evelyn.

“Because someone made sure you wouldn't.””

Evelyn's voice cracked.

“Daniel.””

He ignored her.

Grace stepped closer.

“Who?””

Daniel opened the folder.

“Your mother left instructions concerning this necklace.””

Evelyn suddenly moved toward him.

“Put that away.””

Daniel shut the folder.

“No.””

She stopped.

For the first time, the woman who had dominated the room looked small.

Richard approached Daniel.

“You witnessed the transfer?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard's face darkened.

“Why?””

“Because I was instructed to.””

“By whom?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then at Grace.

“The transfer was requested by Evelyn Whitmore.””

A guest gasped.

Evelyn shook her head.

“That isn't what happened.””

Daniel's voice remained calm.

“You signed the document.””

“I was forced.””

Grace stared at her.

“By whom?””

Evelyn looked at Grace.

“You don't know what your mother did.””

Grace's expression hardened.

“Then tell me.””

Evelyn said nothing.

Grace took another step.

“My mother spent seventeen years protecting your family.””

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“Protecting us?””

“Yes.””

“She betrayed us.””

Grace went still.

“What did she betray?””

Evelyn's eyes flicked toward Richard.

Richard noticed.

“Evelyn,” he said, “what are you hiding?””

She turned on him.

“You knew.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Knew what?””

“You knew Margaret had the original.””

Grace looked between them.

“Original what?””

Neither answered.

Daniel opened the folder again.

“There was a second ownership record.””

Grace stared at him.

“For the necklace?””

“No.””

Daniel slowly pulled out another sheet.

“For something far more valuable.””

Richard's face lost its color.

Evelyn whispered, “Don't.””

Grace looked at the paper.

“What is it?””

Daniel placed it on the auction table.

A legal certificate.

At the top was the Whitmore family crest.

Grace read the first line.

Her breathing stopped.

It wasn't a jewelry document.

It was a property trust.

Her mother's name appeared as the beneficiary.

And beneath it was another name.

Grace.

She looked at Richard.

“Why am I named in your family's trust?””

Richard didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“Because Margaret Hale wasn't just your mother's housekeeper.””

Grace's eyes narrowed.

“Then who was she?””

Evelyn suddenly screamed.

“Stop!””

Every guest turned.

Evelyn's chest rose and fell rapidly.

She pointed at Grace.

“Your mother stole that necklace.””

Grace shook her head.

“No.””

“She lied to everyone.””

“No.””

“She manipulated my family.””

“No.””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“She was supposed to take the secret to her grave.””

Grace stared at her.

“What secret?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.

Then someone at the back of the ballroom whispered:

“Look at the date.””

Grace turned.

Richard had picked up the trust certificate.

He was staring at one specific line.

The date was twenty-eight years old.

The same year Grace had been born.

Richard slowly looked at Grace.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at Daniel.

His voice came out almost as a whisper.

“Grace…”

He stopped.

Grace stepped toward him.

“What?””

Richard couldn't finish the sentence.

Daniel closed the briefcase.

Then the auctioneer suddenly raised the wooden gavel.

*SLAM.*

Everyone jumped.

The sound echoed beneath the chandeliers.

Daniel looked toward the ballroom exit.

A police siren wailed faintly outside.

And Evelyn whispered the one sentence Grace had never expected to hear:

“Your mother wasn't the woman who gave birth to you.””
