The Necklace Was Never Hers / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Name on the Birth Certificate

Grace stopped breathing.

For three seconds, nobody in the ballroom moved.

Then someone dropped a champagne glass.

It hit the marble and exploded into glittering pieces.

Grace stared at Evelyn.

“What did you say?””

Evelyn's lips trembled.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Grace, don't make any decisions until you've seen the documents.””

Grace barely heard him.

She looked at Richard.

“You knew?””

Richard's face had gone gray.

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You knew my mother.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the trust.””

“I knew Margaret was involved with the Whitmore estate.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Richard looked down.

Grace stepped closer.

“Did you know I was part of it?””

He hesitated.

That was enough.

Grace's eyes filled with disbelief.

“You knew.””

Richard swallowed.

“I didn't know the full story.””

Evelyn gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course you didn't.””

Grace turned toward her.

“Then tell me.””

Evelyn looked around the ballroom.

At the wealthy guests.

At the necklace.

At the certificate.

At the open doors where blue police lights were beginning to flash through the glass.

“This is not something to discuss in front of strangers.””

Grace's voice was cold.

“You humiliated me in front of all of them.””

She pointed at the guests.

“You called me a thief.””

Evelyn said nothing.

“You slapped my hand away.””

Still nothing.

“You told everyone I couldn't afford your necklace.””

Grace stepped closer.

“So now you're going to tell them exactly what you were hiding.””

Daniel opened his briefcase again.

“I agree.””

Evelyn turned on him.

“You're making a mistake.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“The mistake was made twenty-eight years ago.””

He pulled out a yellowed envelope.

The name *GRACE HALE* was typed across the front.

Grace stared at it.

“My name.””

Daniel nodded.

“Your legal name.””

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a hospital birth record.

Grace took it with shaking fingers.

She read the first line.

*Infant female.*

Then the date.

Then the hospital.

Then the mother's name.

Her eyes stopped.

There was no Margaret Hale.

There was another name.

*Victoria Whitmore.*

Grace's knees weakened.

Richard caught her elbow.

She pulled away.

“No.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Grace looked at her.

“Is this real?””

Evelyn whispered, “Yes.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“Victoria Whitmore,” Grace repeated.

Richard lowered his head.

Grace's voice cracked.

“Who is Victoria?””

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel did.

“Your mother.””

Grace shook her head.

“My mother was Margaret.””

“She raised you,” Daniel said.

“That makes her my mother.””

Daniel's expression softened.

“I know.””

Grace looked back at the certificate.

“Then why does this say Victoria?””

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Because you were born to my sister.””

Grace looked up.

“Your sister?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Victoria was twenty-two. She was unmarried. Pregnant. And the Whitmore family couldn't survive the scandal.””

Grace stared at her.

“So they gave me to Margaret.””

“They paid Margaret to disappear with you.””

Grace's face hardened.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No. My mother would never—”

“Margaret didn't take you for money,” Evelyn said.

“She took you because Victoria asked her to.””

That stopped Grace.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked away.

“Because Victoria was dying.””

Grace's fingers tightened around the paper.

“What was wrong with her?””

Evelyn hesitated.

Daniel answered.

“An autoimmune disease. Her condition deteriorated after the birth.””

Grace's voice became almost inaudible.

“Did she know me?””

“Yes.””

“Did she hold me?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She held you for eleven minutes.””

Grace closed her eyes.

For the first time that night, her anger cracked.

A memory surfaced.

Margaret humming while brushing her hair.

Margaret whispering, You're my miracle.

Margaret never once told her she had been unwanted.

Never once.

Grace opened her eyes.

“Where is Victoria?””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“She died three weeks after you were born.””

Silence.

Grace looked at the necklace.

The diamonds suddenly blurred.

“Then why did you take her necklace?””

Evelyn's eyes lifted.

“Because Victoria left it to you.””

Grace froze.

Daniel placed another document on the table.

“The necklace was held in trust until Grace turned thirty.””

Grace stared at him.

“I just turned thirty last month.””

“Yes.””

Her heart began pounding.

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“You transferred the necklace yesterday.””

Evelyn's face tightened.

“I had no choice.””

Grace turned.

“Why?””

Evelyn didn't answer.

Daniel reached into the briefcase one more time.

This time he pulled out a photograph.

A young woman stood beside Margaret Hale.

She was holding a newborn baby.

Grace took one look at the woman's face.

She knew her.

Not from memory.

From the framed photograph that had sat inside Margaret's bedroom for years.

Grace whispered, “That's her.””

Daniel nodded.

“Victoria.””

Grace touched the photograph.

Then noticed something in the background.

A man stood behind Victoria.

Young.

Dark-haired.

Wearing the same distinctive silver watch Richard wore tonight.

Grace slowly looked up.

Richard's face had gone white.

“You were there,” she whispered.

Richard didn't answer.

Grace stepped toward him.

“You were at the hospital.””

He finally nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard's lips parted.

Before he could speak, the ballroom doors burst open.

Two police officers entered.

Behind them was a woman in a cream-colored coat.

She held a sealed court envelope.

“Grace Hale?””

Grace turned.

“Yes?””

The woman looked at Evelyn.

Then at the necklace.

May you like

Then at Grace.

“We need to talk about what happened yesterday.””
