The Necklace Was Never Hers / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Man Who Died

Grace couldn't move.

The man standing in the doorway looked older than the photograph.

But there was no mistaking him.

Michael Hale.

Her mother's husband.

The man everyone had told her died before she was born.

He slowly removed his coat.

Nobody spoke.

Evelyn looked as though she'd seen a ghost.

Richard's hands curled into fists.

Daniel whispered, “This was not supposed to happen.””

Grace heard him.

She turned.

“What wasn't supposed to happen?””

Daniel said nothing.

Grace walked toward Michael.

One step.

Then another.

The room seemed impossibly quiet.

When she was finally standing a few feet away, she looked at his face.

“You're Michael Hale.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“My mother's husband.””

“Yes.””

“You died.””

Michael's eyes filled with regret.

“I was told you believed that.””

Grace's voice cracked.

“Who told me?””

“Margaret.””

Grace stepped back.

“My mother?””

Michael nodded.

“She thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””

Grace stared at him.

“Alive from what?””

Michael looked toward Evelyn.

“From her.””

Evelyn snapped, “Don't you dare.””

Michael's voice stayed calm.

“Victoria knew Evelyn would take the child if she discovered she was alive.””

Grace looked at Evelyn.

“You tried to take me?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“That's not what happened.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You threatened Margaret.””

“I was protecting my family.””

“You were protecting the Whitmore name.””

Evelyn's face tightened.

“Same thing.””

Grace looked at Michael.

“Start from the beginning.””

Michael took a breath.

“Victoria was pregnant with you.””

Grace nodded.

“I know.””

“Your family wanted the pregnancy hidden.””

“I know.””

“Victoria refused to give you up.””

“I know.””

Michael's eyes dropped.

“But she knew she wouldn't survive the birth.””

Grace swallowed.

“So she asked Margaret to raise me.””

“Yes.””

“Where were you?””

Michael looked toward Richard.

“I was there.””

Grace followed his gaze.

“Richard knew you?””

Michael nodded.

“We were friends.””

Richard finally spoke.

“Michael, you need to stop.””

“No.””

Richard's voice hardened.

“You don't know what happened after you disappeared.””

Michael turned toward him.

“I know exactly what happened.””

He reached into his coat.

Grace tensed.

He pulled out a small envelope.

He handed it to her.

“My last letter to Margaret.””

Grace opened it.

The handwriting was faded.

She read silently.

If they tell Grace I died, let her believe it until she is safe.

Her hands shook.

Below that was one final line.

She must never know that I am her father.

Grace stopped reading.

She looked up.

The ballroom seemed to disappear.

“My father…”

Michael nodded.

“I am.””

Grace's eyes filled.

“You're my father.””

“Yes.””

She slapped him.

The sound echoed across the marble.

Michael didn't defend himself.

Grace's tears finally fell.

“You let me grow up thinking you were dead.””

“I did.””

“You watched from somewhere?””

“Yes.””

“You knew where I lived?””

“Yes.””

“You knew when Margaret died?””

Michael's eyes closed.

“Yes.””

“And you stayed away?””

“I was afraid.””

Grace laughed through her tears.

“Afraid?””

Michael's voice broke.

“Afraid they would find you.””

Grace turned toward Evelyn.

“They?””

Michael nodded.

“The Whitmores.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Michael, you don't understand what Victoria did.””

He stared at her.

“She left her daughter twelve million dollars.””

“She endangered the family.””

“She protected Grace.””

“She stole from us.””

Michael shook his head.

“No. She took what was already hers.””

Laura stepped between them.

“There's one problem with that argument.””

Everyone looked at her.

Laura lifted the trust documents.

“The trust was funded by Victoria's inheritance.””

Evelyn's face tightened.

Laura continued.

“Not Evelyn's. Not Richard's. Victoria's.””

Richard lowered his eyes.

Grace looked at him.

“You knew all of this.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why did you help them?””

Richard looked toward the necklace.

“I didn't know what Evelyn was planning yesterday.””

Evelyn interrupted.

“Richard—”

“I didn't.””

Grace watched him carefully.

“Then why did you sign as witness?””

Richard's face changed.

He looked at the certificate.

“I was told it was only a temporary transfer.””

Grace's eyes narrowed.

“Temporary to whom?””

Richard didn't answer.

Laura took the document from his hand.

She examined the handwriting.

Then suddenly frowned.

“Wait.””

“What?”” Grace asked.

Laura turned the certificate over.

“There are two transfer signatures.””

Grace stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Laura pointed to the bottom.

“The first one is Evelyn's.””

Grace looked.

“And the second?””

Laura's face went pale.

“The second signature isn't Evelyn's.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Whose is it?””

Laura slowly looked at Grace.

Then at Michael.

Then at the necklace.

“I think we have been looking at the wrong crime.””

Grace felt cold.

“What do you mean?””

Laura turned the certificate toward the chandelier.

A faint watermark appeared in the paper.

A hidden seal.

Her voice dropped.

“This document was altered.””

Evelyn suddenly backed away.

Michael grabbed her arm.

“Evelyn.””

She jerked free.

“No.””

Grace stared at her.

“No what?””

Evelyn's eyes darted toward the ballroom exit.

Then toward the necklace.

Then toward Richard.

Finally, she whispered:

“The person who altered that certificate is standing in this room.””

The police officers immediately reached for their radios.

And behind Grace, the diamond necklace suddenly vanished from its cream-colored bust.
