Chapter 12: The Secret Evelyn Never Knew
The drive was silent.
Nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
The hotel disappeared behind us as the city lights blurred through the windows.
Lily slept in Nia’s arms in the back seat.
Watching them together still felt unreal.
Like I was seeing a dream I had stopped believing would happen.
Nia noticed me looking.
“You okay?””
I almost answered yes.
Almost.
But we had all spent years saying things that weren’t true.
“No.””
She nodded.
“I’m not either.””
That honesty felt different.
Painful.
But real.
I reached over and held her hand.
Seven years ago, I would have given anything to have this moment.
Now I had it.
And I hated that it came after so much damage.
“What did Adrian know?”” I asked.
Nia looked out the window.
“I don’t know.””
“Are you scared?””
She looked at Lily.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“But not of the truth.””
I looked at her.
“I’m scared of what it cost.””
Her words stayed with me.
Because that was the real tragedy.
Even if we uncovered everything, we couldn’t get those years back.
We arrived at an abandoned warehouse on the edge of town.
The building looked forgotten.
Broken windows.
Rusting metal.
A place where secrets belonged.
Marcus stepped out first.
Then Leon.
I followed with Nia and Lily.
A man stood near the entrance.
Adrian.
He looked older than I expected.
Tired.
Like guilt had aged him.
When he saw Nia, he looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
Nia stopped.
“You should be.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Evelyn wasn’t with us.
She had stayed behind.
For once, she had no control over where the truth went.
Adrian looked at me.
“You’re Darius.””
I nodded.
“You know who I am?””
He gave a sad smile.
“I’ve known about you for years.””
The sentence made my blood run cold.
“Then talk.””
Adrian looked at Lily.
“Not in front of her.””
I looked at my daughter.
Again.
The same problem.
Protecting her.
But I also knew we couldn’t hide everything forever.
Nia took Lily a few steps away with Clara.
Adrian waited.
Then he spoke.
“Evelyn wasn’t the person who started this.””
Everyone became still.
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Adrian looked at Leon.
“Neither was I.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then who?””
Adrian reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old envelope.
Another envelope.
Another piece of the past.
“I found this years ago.””
He handed it to me.
My name was written on it.
Again.
I stared.
“What is this?””
Adrian looked at Nia.
“It was supposed to reach you the day Lily was born.””
My hands froze.
The day Lily was born.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
But this time, the handwriting wasn’t Nia’s.
It was mine.
I looked up.
“What?””
Adrian swallowed.
“You wrote it.””
I stared at the page.
I didn’t remember.
I read the first line.
My heart stopped.
“If anything happens to me, I need someone to protect Nia and Lily…”
I looked at Adrian.
“What does this mean?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Darius, you forgot something.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“You weren’t the person Evelyn manipulated first.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then who?””
He looked behind me.
Toward Leon.
And whispered:
“The person she used to control you was someone inside your own family.””
I turned.
May you like
Leon’s face had gone completely pale.
Because he knew exactly who Adrian meant.
