Chapter 14: The Truth We Lost

I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

Made to forget.

The words repeated in my mind.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Nia stepped forward.

“Darius…”

I looked at her.

“What happened to me?””

Her eyes filled.

“You were hurt.””

My breathing stopped.

“Hurt how?””

She looked at Leon.

He closed his eyes.

“After you confronted Evelyn, you left.””

“Why?””

“Because you were angry.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Adrian spoke quietly.

“You drove away that night.””

I frowned.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

The fear in his voice made me nervous.

“You crashed.””

The warehouse disappeared around me.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“A crash?””

Nia nodded.

“You survived.””

“But?””

She looked down.

“But you lost parts of your memory.””

I stared at her.

“And everyone let me believe Nia abandoned me?””

Nia looked away.

Not because she agreed.

Because she was remembering.

“I woke up in the hospital,” I said slowly.

“Yes.””

“I was alone.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was there.””

I froze.

“What?””

Nia nodded.

“I sat beside you.””

“Then why don’t I remember?””

“Because Evelyn made sure you didn’t.””

I turned toward Leon.

“How?””

He looked broken.

“She convinced the doctors you needed distance from stress.””

My anger returned.

“You agreed?””

“I thought I was helping.””

Everyone said that.

Helping.

Always helping.

I walked away.

Just a few steps.

Because I needed space from all of them.

Seven years.

Seven years of my life were built around a memory that wasn’t complete.

I looked at Lily.

She was holding Nia’s hand.

The two people I thought I lost.

The two people I almost lost forever.

“I hated you,” I whispered.

Nia looked at me.

“I know.””

“I hated you for leaving.””

A tear fell down her face.

“I know.””

“I told Lily you were gone.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

The pain of admitting it was unbearable.

But Nia walked toward me.

“You didn’t know.””

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know the truth.””

For years, I thought forgiveness meant pretending nothing happened.

But standing there, I realized something.

Forgiveness required knowing what actually happened first.

Adrian stepped forward.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He glanced at Leon.

“The crash wasn’t an accident.””

The room froze.

Nia grabbed my hand.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“Evelyn arranged it.””

Leon shook his head.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.””

My father went silent.

Because somewhere inside, he already knew.

“How?””

Adrian took out another document.

“She manipulated the situation. She knew Darius would confront her.””

My fingers tightened.

“She wanted me gone.””

Adrian nodded.

“She wanted you unable to challenge her.””

Clara whispered:

“She wanted the perfect family.””

I looked at Evelyn’s absence.

Even without her there, she controlled the room.

That was her power.

But not anymore.

My phone rang.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke at first.

Then a voice.

Evelyn.

“You found out everything.””

My jaw tightened.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“I want to see Lily.””

Nia immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

Evelyn continued.

“Darius, listen to me.””

I said nothing.

“I know what you think of me.””

“You tried to take my daughter.””

Silence.

Then:

“I saved her.””

I almost laughed.

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“You don’t understand what’s coming.””

I looked around.

Everyone was listening.

“What’s coming?””

A pause.

Then Evelyn said:

“The reason I did all of this.””

My grip tightened on the phone.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“Because I found something seven years ago.””

“What?””

Another pause.

“A truth about Lily.””

Everyone froze.

Nia’s face changed.

“What did she say?””

I looked at her.

Evelyn whispered through the phone:

“Darius…”

A long silence.

Then:

May you like

“Lily isn’t the only child who was hidden from the truth.””

The call ended.
