Chapter 13: The Betrayal Before the Betrayal

The warehouse felt colder than it had a moment before.

Not because the temperature changed.

Because everyone finally understood.

The truth we had been chasing wasn’t just about Nia disappearing.

It wasn’t just about Evelyn.

It went deeper.

Much deeper.

I looked at Leon.

My father.

The man who had spent years telling me he wanted to protect me.

The man who admitted he hid the truth.

The man who stood quietly while my family was torn apart.

“You knew.””

Leon didn’t answer.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

Nia stepped closer.

“Leon.””

His eyes moved toward her.

“I’m sorry.””

She shook her head.

“Don’t.””

The pain in her voice was stronger than anger.

“Everyone keeps saying sorry after they get caught.””

Leon lowered his eyes.

“I deserve that.””

I held the letter tighter.

The one I supposedly wrote.

The one I had no memory of.

“What happened to me?””

Adrian looked at me.

“That’s the part nobody wanted you to remember.””

My stomach tightened.

“Nobody?””

He glanced at Leon.

Then away.

“After Lily was born, you started noticing things.””

“What things?””

“Evelyn’s behavior. The way she controlled conversations. The way she made decisions about your family without asking.””

I looked at Nia.

She nodded slowly.

“That’s when you started questioning her.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled.

“You told me you were worried.””

A memory flashed.

A late night.

Nia sitting beside me on the couch.

Me telling her something felt wrong.

But the memory was incomplete.

Like pieces were missing.

Adrian continued.

“You wrote that letter because you were afraid something would happen.””

I stared at the paper.

“I wrote this?””

“Yes.””

“Then why don’t I remember?””

Nobody answered.

Until Leon did.

“I thought it would protect you.””

I turned.

“What did you do?””

His face collapsed.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I helped Evelyn erase the evidence.””

The words felt unreal.

“You helped her?””

“I didn’t know what she was planning.””

“That’s your excuse?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

For once, he didn’t defend himself.

“No excuse.””

Nia stepped back.

“Leon, you told me everything would be okay.””

He looked at her.

“I was wrong.””

“You told me Darius needed time.””

“I was wrong.””

“You told me staying away was safer.””

His voice broke.

“I was wrong.””

Silence.

Because some apologies were too late.

Adrian looked at me.

“Evelyn found out you were collecting information.””

“What information?””

“Records. Messages. Proof.””

I frowned.

“Proof of what?””

Adrian looked at Leon.

Then at me.

“Proof that she had been manipulating everyone around her.””

My heartbeat increased.

“And?””

“And she panicked.””

I looked at the letter again.

The words blurred.

“What happened after?””

Adrian hesitated.

“Your father confronted her.””

Everyone looked at Leon.

“You confronted her?””

Leon nodded.

“I told her to stop.””

“And she?””

His face tightened.

“She threatened me.””

“With what?””

Leon didn’t answer.

Adrian did.

“She threatened to expose something about your father.””

I looked at Leon.

“What?””

His jaw tightened.

“I made mistakes before I became the person you know.””

The sentence confused me.

“What mistakes?””

He looked away.

“Before your mother died.””

The words froze me.

My mother.

A subject I never expected to hear tonight.

I had spent the entire night discovering lies.

But now something older was opening.

Something buried.

Leon continued.

“Evelyn knew about my past.””

Nia looked shocked.

“You never told Darius?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“How much of my life is built on things nobody told me?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

Too much.

Adrian stepped forward.

“This is why Evelyn had power.””

He looked at all of us.

“Everyone had something to lose.””

Clara nodded.

“She collected secrets.””

“And used them,” Marcus added.

I looked at Adrian.

“What was the biggest secret?””

He went quiet.

Then he reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small recording device.

“I saved this.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Another recording?””

“Yes.””

“From when?””

“The night Nia disappeared.””

Nia froze.

Adrian pressed play.

At first, only voices.

Then Evelyn.

“Darius will believe whatever I tell him.””

My blood ran cold.

Then another voice.

My own.

Younger.

Angrier.

“You don’t get to control my family.””

I stopped breathing.

I remembered that voice.

Because it was mine.

I had confronted her.

I had known.

Then Evelyn again.

“You have no idea who you’re fighting.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

I looked at Leon.

“You knew I confronted her.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled.

“Because after that night…”

He stopped.

I stepped closer.

“After what night?””

Leon whispered:

“You disappeared too.””

The world went silent.

“What?””

Adrian looked at me.

“You weren’t just manipulated.””

May you like

A chill moved through me.

“You were made to forget.””
