Chapter 5: The Man Who Stole His Name
The rain covered the sound of Adrian’s heartbeat.
For twenty years, Richard Cole had been a symbol of success.
A man whose photograph hung in corporate offices.
A man whose name was printed in financial magazines.
A man Adrian had spent his entire adult life trying to impress.
And now that same man stood in the street with armed men behind him, calling Adrian by a name he had buried.
Daniel.
Adrian stared through the rain.
“You knew.””
Richard tilted his head.
“Knew what?””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You knew who I was.””
A faint smile appeared on Richard’s face.
“I always knew.””
The words were calm.
Too calm.
Thomas immediately moved in front of Adrian.
“Stay away from him.””
Richard looked at the old man.
“Still playing the loyal father?””
Thomas’s expression darkened.
“You took everything from him.””
Richard sighed.
“That’s a dramatic way to describe survival.””
Claire stepped forward.
Her voice trembled with anger.
“Survival?””
She looked at the man who had stolen twenty years of her life.
“You erased my son.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“No.””
He looked at Adrian.
“I saved him.””
Adrian laughed once.
A bitter sound.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Richard walked closer.
The armed men followed.
“I expect you to understand.””
“Understand what?””
Richard stopped a few feet away.
“That your parents were willing to destroy everything.””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Don’t talk about my parents.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because you don’t remember them.””
The words hit exactly where Richard wanted them to.
Adrian hated that.
Because it was true.
He had photographs.
Documents.
Other people’s memories.
But his own memories were broken pieces.
Richard noticed his silence.
“You want answers.””
Adrian said nothing.
Richard continued.
“Then come with me.””
Claire grabbed Adrian’s arm.
“No.””
Richard looked at her.
“You still think you have a choice.””
The threat in his voice was quiet.
That made it worse.
Adrian looked at the men around them.
“How many people did you bring?””
Richard glanced around.
“Enough.””
Thomas whispered:
“Adrian, don’t listen to him.””
Richard smiled.
“Interesting.””
He looked at Thomas.
“You spent twenty years searching for him, but you never told him the truth.””
Thomas’s face changed.
Adrian noticed immediately.
“What truth?””
Nobody answered.
Adrian looked between them.
“What truth?””
Claire closed her eyes.
Richard gave a small laugh.
“That’s the problem with secrets.””
He stepped closer.
“They don’t stay buried forever.””
Adrian’s patience broke.
“You keep talking in circles.””
His voice echoed through the alley.
“I want facts.””
Richard studied him.
Then he nodded.
“Fine.””
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small device.
A phone.
He pressed the screen.
A video appeared.
Adrian watched.
At first, he saw nothing but darkness.
Then a room.
A hospital room.
A young boy lying on a bed.
Himself.
Adrian stopped breathing.
The video was old.
The quality was poor.
But the child was unmistakable.
A younger version of him.
Richard’s voice came from behind the camera.
“Do you remember this?””
Adrian couldn’t answer.
On the screen, the little boy opened his eyes.
A woman sat beside him.
Eleanor.
His adoptive mother.
She looked younger.
Afraid.
Then another person entered.
Richard.
The younger Richard.
The child looked up.
“Where’s my mom?””
The question hit Adrian harder than he expected.
Because he heard his own childhood voice.
Richard’s younger voice answered:
“Your mother can’t come back.””
The child started crying.
“I want Claire.””
Adrian’s hands shook.
He had forgotten this.
Or someone had made him forget.
In the video, Eleanor sat beside him.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
The child looked at her.
“You have a new family now.””
The little boy shook his head.
“No.””
Eleanor touched his face.
“You’re safe.””
Richard stopped the video.
The screen went black.
Adrian looked up slowly.
“What was that?””
Richard’s expression was unreadable.
“The night you became Adrian Cole.””
Claire looked horrified.
“You kept that?””
Richard ignored her.
Adrian stared.
“You made me believe my mother abandoned me.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked directly at him.
“I made you believe you survived.””
The alley went silent.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You’re sick.””
Richard didn’t react.
“You see a monster because you don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
Richard looked at Thomas and Claire.
“They won’t.””
Claire’s voice was cold.
“Because you’ll twist everything.””
Richard looked back at Adrian.
“Your father built something dangerous.””
Adrian already knew this part.
“The system.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you wanted it.””
“I wanted control.””
The honesty surprised Adrian.
Richard continued.
“Your father believed information should belong to everyone.””
Thomas interrupted.
“He believed people deserved the truth.””
Richard looked at him.
“And that belief got him killed.””
Adrian froze.
“You said he disappeared.””
Richard was silent.
That silence was enough.
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“You know he’s dead.””
Claire looked away.
Thomas closed his eyes.
Richard finally spoke.
“Yes.””
The rain continued falling.
Adrian felt something crack inside him.
His father.
A man he never knew.
A man he had spent his life wondering about.
Dead.
And everyone knew except him.
“Who killed him?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Who killed my father?””
Richard looked at Claire.
Then Thomas.
Then Adrian.
“Your mother knows.””
Claire’s face changed.
Adrian turned.
“Mom?””
The word came out naturally.
And that scared him.
Claire looked at him.
“I didn’t kill him.””
“I didn’t ask that.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
Claire looked at Richard.
“Not here.””
Richard smiled.
“Of course.””
Adrian noticed.
The two of them were not afraid of each other.
They were afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.
“What happened between you and my father?””
Richard answered.
“I loved your father.””
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
Richard’s expression changed for the first time.
A flicker of regret.
“We were brothers.””
The words stunned Adrian.
Thomas looked down.
Adrian stared.
“Brothers?””
Richard nodded.
“Michael Reed was my brother.””
The rain seemed louder.
“You were related?””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at Claire.
She nodded slowly.
“Richard was Michael’s older brother.””
Adrian looked back at Richard.
“Then why?””
Richard’s face hardened.
“Because Michael destroyed everything.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Richard looked at him.
“He chose ideals over family.””
Claire stepped forward.
“He chose what was right.””
Richard’s eyes turned cold.
“And look where that got him.””
Adrian felt the anger building.
“You’re blaming him for what you did.””
Richard smiled sadly.
“That’s exactly what he would have said.””
A sudden sound came from Richard’s men.
One of them touched his earpiece.
“Sir.””
Richard turned.
“What?””
The man whispered something.
Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Adrian saw it.
Something had gone wrong.
“What happened?””
Richard ignored him.
He looked at Claire.
Then Thomas.
Then Adrian.
“You have less time than I thought.””
Thomas stiffened.
“What did you do?””
Richard stepped backward.
“I didn’t do anything.””
He looked toward the city.
“Someone else moved first.””
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Richard looked at him.
For the first time that night…
He looked genuinely worried.
“Eleanor is coming.””
Adrian froze.
His adoptive mother.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who might have stolen his life.
Richard turned to leave.
Adrian shouted:
“Wait!””
Richard stopped.
Adrian’s voice was filled with anger.
“Did you love my father?””
Richard didn’t turn around.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“Yes.””
A pause.
“And that’s why losing him was easier than admitting I was wrong.””
Richard walked away.
The men followed.
Adrian watched him disappear into the rain.
Then he looked at Claire.
At Thomas.
At the compass.
And finally at the city where he had spent twenty years believing he belonged.
A black limousine appeared at the end of the street.
The door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Elegant.
Older.
Familiar.
Eleanor Cole.
She looked at Adrian with tears in her eyes.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Regret.
“Daniel.””
Adrian went still.
Because after everything…
After all the lies…
She was the only person left who had been there from the beginning.
Eleanor whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
Then she looked at Claire.
May you like
And said:
“But your mother never told you the worst part.””
