Chapter 9: The Last Lie Before the Truth
Adrian stared at Lucas.
Noah.
His brother.
The person he had trusted more than almost anyone in the world.
And yet, those words had just cut deeper than any betrayal he had ever faced.
Your mother was the reason they found you.
The sentence repeated in his mind.
Eleanor.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who held his hand when he was sick.
The woman who taught him how to read.
The woman who told him he was safe.
His entire life had been built on contradictions.
Lucas watched him carefully.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“No.””
Lucas paused.
“You don’t.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You don’t get to tell me what I’m thinking.””
His voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
“You spent years sitting beside me.””
Lucas looked down.
“Yes.””
“You knew every detail about my life.””
“Yes.””
“You knew I was searching for answers.””
Lucas swallowed.
“Yes.””
“And you waited three months after learning we were brothers to tell me?””
The guilt on Lucas’s face was real.
That somehow made it worse.
“I was afraid.””
Adrian laughed.
“Afraid?””
He looked around the abandoned office.
“You’re telling me you were afraid?””
Lucas looked at him.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
A long silence.
Then Lucas spoke.
“When I found out who I was, I thought my whole life was fake.””
Adrian said nothing.
Lucas continued.
“Richard raised me.””
His voice became softer.
“He gave me a home. A name. An education.””
He looked at Adrian.
“Just like Eleanor did for you.””
The comparison hit hard.
Adrian looked away.
Lucas walked toward the old desk.
“Do you know what it feels like to find out the person who raised you lied?””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
For a moment, the anger between them disappeared.
Because they were not strangers.
They were two children who had been given different versions of the same nightmare.
Lucas looked at him.
“That’s why I didn’t tell you.””
“Because you understood?””
“Because I knew you would hate her.””
Adrian froze.
Lucas continued.
“And I wasn’t sure if you were ready to know the whole truth.””
Adrian looked up.
“The whole truth?””
Lucas nodded.
“Eleanor didn’t just sign your adoption papers.””
He reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a file.
“She changed the records.””
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Lucas placed the file on the desk.
“Your original hospital documents.””
Adrian opened it.
His eyes moved across the pages.
Then stopped.
The documents were old.
Official.
Stamped.
His name was there.
Daniel Michael Reed.
But underneath…
A handwritten note.
*Identity protection authorized.*
Adrian looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Lucas took a breath.
“It means Eleanor didn’t create the lie alone.””
Adrian looked at him.
“Who helped her?””
Lucas’s expression changed.
“The same person who helped destroy our family.””
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
“Richard.””
Lucas shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian frowned.
“You said—”
“I said Richard betrayed our father.””
Lucas looked at the file.
“But he wasn’t the one who made the first move.””
The room became silent.
Adrian felt the answer before he heard it.
“Who?””
Lucas looked directly at him.
“Your father.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
Lucas shook his head.
“Not intentionally.””
He walked toward the window.
“Michael created the system that exposed everyone’s secrets.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“But he didn’t realize one thing.””
“What?””
Lucas looked back.
“He had created something powerful enough that even the people protecting him wanted control of it.””
Adrian stared.
“You’re saying someone close to him betrayed him.””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Lucas hesitated.
Then opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A group of people standing outside the original Reed company building.
Michael.
Richard.
Eleanor.
And another person.
Adrian looked closer.
His eyes widened.
Because he knew the face.
Everyone in business knew the face.
The most respected investor in America.
The man who had built a financial empire.
The man who had helped launch dozens of companies.
“Charles Whitmore.””
Lucas nodded.
“He funded your father’s early work.””
Adrian looked confused.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Lucas pointed at the photograph.
“He was the first person to know about the system.””
Adrian studied the picture.
“Then why isn’t he in any company records?””
“Because someone removed him.””
“Who?””
Lucas looked at him.
“Eleanor.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Again.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
“Why?””
Lucas’s voice became quiet.
“Because Eleanor discovered Charles wasn’t investing in your father.””
He looked at Adrian.
“He was investigating him.””
The pieces began moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Adrian sat down.
“My entire life…”
He stopped.
Because saying it out loud made it real.
Lucas sat across from him.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You had Richard.””
Lucas’s expression changed.
“You think that was better?””
The question was honest.
And painful.
“You think having someone raise you with a lie is better than growing up not knowing why your own family disappeared?””
Adrian had no answer.
Lucas looked away.
“We were both victims.””
The words stayed between them.
Then Adrian noticed something.
A detail.
Something wrong.
“Why are you helping me now?””
Lucas looked at him.
“What?””
“You said you were afraid.””
“Yes.””
“But you still brought me here.””
Lucas was silent.
Adrian leaned forward.
“You still contacted me.””
A pause.
“Why?””
Lucas looked down.
Then whispered:
“Because I found out who killed our father.””
Adrian went still.
The room seemed colder.
“Who?””
Lucas didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he opened another document.
A transaction record.
A payment.
A signature.
Adrian read the name.
And felt his stomach drop.
Because it wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t Charles.
It wasn’t anyone he expected.
It was someone much closer.
Someone who had been part of his life from the beginning.
“No.””
Lucas watched him.
“I wish it wasn’t true.””
Adrian shook his head.
“No.””
The signature stared back at him.
A name.
A name he knew.
A name that belonged to the person who had always claimed to love him.
Eleanor Cole.
Adrian stood.
“You’re lying.””
Lucas didn’t move.
“I thought that too.””
“She wouldn’t.””
“She did.””
“No.””
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“She raised me.””
Lucas looked at him.
“And that’s why it hurts.””
Adrian pushed the document away.
“I need proof.””
Lucas nodded.
“I knew you would.””
He pulled out a small flash drive.
“Your father recorded everything.””
Adrian looked at it.
“Where?””
Lucas held it tightly.
“Somewhere only Michael knew about.””
“Where?””
Lucas looked toward the old building.
“The place where he hid his final message.””
Adrian stood.
“Take me there.””
Lucas hesitated.
“Before we go, there’s something else.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What?””
Lucas’s face became serious.
“I wasn’t the only one who found out the truth.””
A chill ran through Adrian.
“Who else?””
Lucas looked toward the window.
Outside, a black car had stopped.
Someone stepped out.
Adrian recognized the person immediately.
Thomas.
But something was wrong.
The old man wasn’t alone.
A second person stepped out behind him.
Adrian’s heart stopped.
Because the person was holding a gun.
And Thomas was not fighting him.
He was standing beside him.
Lucas whispered:
“Your father’s last mistake was trusting Thomas.””
Adrian stared through the window.
“No.””
Thomas looked up.
As if he knew Adrian was watching.
His face was filled with regret.
Then the man beside him entered the light.
Adrian recognized him.
Charles Whitmore.
The missing investor.
The man who disappeared from history.
The man who had started everything.
Charles smiled.
And said:
“Daniel Reed.””
Adrian felt the world tilt.
“Your father left you something.””
A pause.
“But he never told you why he left it.””
Charles raised the flash drive in his hand.
“The truth is simple.””
He smiled.
“Michael Reed wasn’t trying to expose the world.””
Adrian stared.
“Then what was he doing?””
May you like
Charles looked directly at him.
“He was trying to expose you.””
