Chapter 8: The Brother Hidden in Plain Sight
Adrian couldn’t move.
The phone felt heavier than it should have.
A brother.
A person who shared his blood.
A person who had existed somewhere in the world for twenty years while Adrian lived believing he had no family left.
His mind searched through every face he knew.
Every person he had trusted.
Every person who had stood beside him.
But the answer felt impossible.
“Who are you?””
The voice on the phone remained silent for a moment.
Then came a quiet laugh.
“You really don’t know.””
Adrian’s grip tightened.
“Tell me.””
A pause.
Then:
“I was there the whole time.””
The call ended.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Claire whispered:
“He called you.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You know who it was.””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“Who?””
Claire looked away.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I’m tired of everyone protecting me from the truth.””
He held up the phone.
“Who was that?””
Eleanor looked at Claire.
Thomas looked at the floor.
Three people.
Three secrets.
Adrian felt anger rising.
“I built my entire life without knowing my own name.””
His voice became louder.
“And now I find out I have a brother?””
Claire’s eyes filled.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
She couldn’t answer.
“When was the right time?””
Silence.
Adrian looked around the old house.
The walls.
The photographs.
The memories that belonged to someone else.
“My whole life is a room full of locked doors.””
He looked at Claire.
“And every person I love has the key except me.””
The words hurt her.
He saw it.
But he couldn’t stop.
Not anymore.
Thomas stepped forward.
“Adrian.””
“No.””
He looked at the old man.
“You too.””
Thomas stopped.
“You found me tonight.””
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“You knew about my father. You knew about the company. You knew about my past.””
Thomas swallowed.
“Yes.””
“And you never told me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Everyone says that.””
He looked at the recorder.
“Everyone says they protected me.””
A long silence followed.
Then Claire finally spoke.
“His name is Noah.””
Adrian turned.
“Noah?””
Claire nodded.
“Your brother.””
“Where is he?””
She looked at Eleanor.
Then at Thomas.
“He was raised away from us.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why?””
Claire’s eyes filled with pain.
“Because after your father disappeared, we thought you were the only child they were looking for.””
“But they weren’t.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“They were looking for both of you.””
Adrian looked at the recorder.
The message from Michael suddenly made sense.
If they find his brother, they’ll use him to get to Daniel.
“Where is Noah now?””
Nobody answered.
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“Where?””
Eleanor finally spoke.
“He’s close.””
Adrian looked at her.
“How close?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation terrified him.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message.
From the same unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Adrian opened it.
And his entire body went cold.
It was a picture of him.
Standing in the Reed house.
Taken moments ago.
Underneath was a message.
*You’re looking in the wrong direction.*
Another photo appeared.
This time, it was a man.
Standing in a modern office.
Looking directly at the camera.
Adrian knew him.
Everyone knew him.
The face was on business magazines.
News interviews.
Company websites.
The man who had helped Adrian build Cole Industries.
His closest advisor.
His right-hand man.
Lucas Bennett.
Adrian whispered:
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“You know him?””
Adrian couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly, every memory felt different.
Lucas sitting beside him during late-night meetings.
Lucas advising him during his first major acquisition.
Lucas telling him:
“Family isn’t always blood.””
The words now sounded different.
Adrian looked at the photograph again.
“No.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“Who is he?””
Adrian swallowed.
“Lucas Bennett.””
Eleanor’s expression changed.
She knew the name.
“You trust him?””
Adrian looked at her.
“I did.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then Claire whispered:
“He is your brother.””
The words didn’t make sense.
Adrian stared.
“What?””
Claire nodded slowly.
“His real name is Noah Reed.””
The world stopped.
Lucas.
Noah.
His brother.
The person who had stood beside him for years.
The person who knew every weakness in his company.
The person who knew every decision he made.
Adrian stepped back.
“No.””
Claire touched his arm.
“He didn’t know at first.””
“How do you know?””
“Because your father made sure.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Claire walked toward an old cabinet.
She opened it.
Inside was another folder.
She handed it to Adrian.
“He was too young when everything happened.””
Adrian opened it.
Inside were adoption records.
Photographs.
Documents.
A boy.
A younger version of Lucas.
Noah.
Claire continued.
“After the accident, Richard took Noah.””
Adrian looked up.
“Richard?””
She nodded.
“He believed Noah could be controlled.””
Thomas’s face darkened.
“He used him.””
Claire nodded.
“Richard raised him with a different story.””
Adrian looked back at the documents.
“What story?””
“That Michael abandoned him.””
Adrian felt sick.
Just like him.
Another child.
Another stolen identity.
Another life rewritten.
“But Lucas…”
Claire interrupted.
“Noah doesn’t remember.””
Adrian looked at her.
“He doesn’t know?””
“No.””
“Then why did he contact me?””
Nobody answered.
Adrian’s phone buzzed again.
A new message.
This time, only words.
*Come alone.*
Then another.
*You deserve to know why I stayed beside you.*
Adrian stared.
Thomas immediately said:
“No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You can’t stop me.””
“He could be leading you into a trap.””
“He could also be my brother.””
Thomas had no answer.
Adrian looked at Claire.
“Where is he?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But Adrian noticed something.
A small movement.
A glance toward the folder.
He followed her eyes.
A location was written on one page.
Adrian picked it up.
A private building downtown.
The old Reed family foundation office.
He looked at Eleanor.
“You knew.””
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.””
But her expression said otherwise.
Adrian turned toward the door.
Claire grabbed his hand.
“Daniel.””
He stopped.
It was the first time she had touched him.
The first time he allowed it.
She looked at him.
“I lost you once.””
Her voice broke.
“I won’t lose you again.””
Adrian looked at his mother.
For a moment, he saw the woman from his memories.
Not the stranger from tonight.
Not the mystery.
His mother.
“I’ll come back.””
She nodded.
But she didn’t look convinced.
Because everyone in the room knew the same thing.
The truth had brought Adrian home.
But it had also put a target on his back.
Two hours later, Adrian stood outside the abandoned foundation office.
Alone.
Just as the message demanded.
The building was dark.
Silent.
Waiting.
He entered.
The lights turned on automatically.
A familiar voice came from the second floor.
“You came.””
Adrian looked up.
Lucas Bennett stood above him.
Not as his advisor.
Not as his employee.
As Noah Reed.
His brother.
Adrian slowly walked upstairs.
“Why?””
Lucas looked at him.
His eyes were filled with something Adrian had never seen before.
Fear.
“I didn’t know who I was either.””
Adrian stopped.
Lucas continued.
“Richard told me my entire life was a lie.””
He laughed softly.
“Funny, right?””
Adrian said nothing.
“We spent years helping each other build an empire.””
Lucas looked at him.
“Neither of us knew we were rebuilding our father’s.””
Adrian stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Lucas looked away.
“Because I found out three months ago.””
“Three months?””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing?””
Lucas’s expression changed.
“Because when I learned the truth…”
He looked at Adrian.
“I also learned something else.””
“What?””
Lucas took a breath.
“The person who ordered the attack on our family twenty years ago…”
He stepped closer.
“It wasn’t Richard.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
Lucas lowered his voice.
“It was someone who had access to everything.””
A chill moved through Adrian.
“Who?””
Lucas looked at him.
And whispered:
“The person who signed your adoption papers.””
Adrian’s face went pale.
Eleanor.
The room went silent.
Then Lucas said the words that shattered the last piece of certainty Adrian had left.
“Your mother didn’t save you from the enemy, Adrian.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was the reason they found you.””
