Chapter 7: The Man Elena Was Running From

The door handle moved slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Like whoever stood outside wasn’t trying to break in.

They wanted us to know they were there.

That was worse.

A person who wanted to hide would move quietly.

A person who wanted fear would make sure you heard every second before they entered.

I tightened my grip around Leo.

Marcus stepped in front of us.

“Everyone behind me.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

I knew that tone.

It was the tone of a man preparing for violence but hoping he wouldn’t need it.

Clara moved closer to me.

Not because she trusted me.

Because she trusted what was between us now.

A family connection neither of us understood yet.

The door opened.

And a man walked inside.

He wasn’t wearing a mask.

He wasn’t carrying a weapon.

He didn’t look like someone who had come to hurt us.

That almost made him more dangerous.

Because confident people didn’t need disguises.

He looked around the room.

His eyes passed over Marcus.

Then Daniel.

Then stopped on me.

“Rico Moretti.””

I stared at him.

“Who are you?””

He smiled slightly.

“Someone your wife spent her last days trying to find.””

My entire body went cold.

Elena.

Again.

Everyone had something connected to her.

Everyone had a piece of a story I was never allowed to hear.

“I asked who you are.””

The man stepped forward.

“My name is Adrian Cross.””

Daniel immediately reacted.

“Rico, don’t listen to him.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“You know him?””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Adrian smiled.

“That’s interesting.””

He looked at Daniel.

“After everything, you still don’t want him to know?””

“Leave.””

Daniel’s voice was sharp.

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You spent two years lying to him.””

He looked back at me.

“And now you want to protect him?””

I felt my anger rising.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Clara.

She looked just as confused.

Margaret looked terrified.

Then Adrian’s eyes moved toward Leo.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something worse.

Recognition.

I stepped in front of my son.

“Don’t look at him.””

Adrian raised his hands.

“I’m not here for the boy.””

“Then why are you here?””

His eyes moved to the drawing in Clara’s hand.

The drawing Elena made.

The one with the shadow figure.

“I’m here because Elena left something behind.””

I looked at the paper.

“What?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Clara.

“You finally found her.””

Clara froze.

“Found who?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Her.””

My heart sank.

“You know Clara?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

He was silent.

Then he said:

“Because I helped hide her.””

The room went completely quiet.

Clara’s face changed.

“You?””

Adrian looked at her.

“I was there the night Elena gave you to Margaret.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

My voice became colder.

“You’re telling me you knew my daughter existed?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

His expression changed.

“I did everything I could.””

I laughed.

A bitter sound.

“Everyone says that.””

Adrian didn’t react.

“Because everyone thinks they were protecting Elena.””

He looked around the room.

“But nobody protected her.””

Those words hit harder than I expected.

Because deep down, I knew there was truth in them.

I was her husband.

And I wasn’t there.

I thought success meant keeping my family safe.

But maybe I had built a wall so high that I never saw the danger coming.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

Adrian nodded.

“Your wife discovered that someone inside Moretti Industries was moving money through fake companies.””

“My company.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

I noticed.

“You.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Adrian smiled.

“That’s exactly what she thought at first.””

My eyes moved between them.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Elena believed Daniel betrayed her.””

Daniel looked away.

“But then she found something else.””

“What?””

Adrian’s expression became serious.

“She found Daniel was being used.””

I frowned.

“Used by who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian said:

“By your father.””

The room went silent.

My father.

A man who had been dead for eight years.

A man who built the foundation of Moretti Industries before I expanded it.

A man whose portrait still hung in the company headquarters.

“No.””

Adrian nodded.

“Your father wasn’t as retired as everyone believed.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

He looked at Daniel.

“Tell him.””

Daniel said nothing.

I turned.

“Daniel.””

His face was full of regret.

“Your father created a private financial network before he died.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

“I discovered it after his death.””

“And you hid it from me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

My anger exploded.

“Stop saying that!””

The room went silent.

I stepped forward.

“Everyone keeps using that word.””

I pointed around.

“Protect.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You hid my daughter.””

I looked at Margaret.

“You lied to Clara.””

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew about Elena.””

My voice broke.

“And all of you decided I was too fragile to know the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Because they knew.

I wasn’t angry because they had secrets.

I was angry because they took away my choice.

Elena’s choice.

My children’s choice.

Everyone’s choice.

Then Adrian quietly said:

“Your wife didn’t hide the truth because she thought you were weak.””

I looked at him.

“Then why?””

His answer was immediate.

“Because she knew you would burn everything down to protect your family.””

I stopped.

Because that was true.

If someone threatened Leo, I wouldn’t negotiate.

I wouldn’t compromise.

I would destroy everything in my way.

Elena knew me.

Better than anyone.

Adrian continued.

“She knew your first reaction would be revenge.””

I said nothing.

“And she was right.””

A silence followed.

Then Clara spoke.

“My mother knew about me.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She knew where I was.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she come for me?””

That question broke something in the room.

Adrian looked down.

“Because she tried.””

Clara froze.

“What?””

Adrian’s voice softened.

“She came to get you.””

“When?””

“The night before the crash.””

My heart stopped.

“What happened?””

Adrian looked at me.

“She was followed.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“By who?””

Adrian looked toward the window.

“The same person who is following us now.””

Marcus suddenly looked outside.

“Movement.””

Everyone went still.

Then came a sound.

A car engine.

Not one.

Several.

Marcus checked his weapon.

“We need to move.””

I grabbed Leo.

“Where?””

Adrian looked at the back exit.

“There’s a tunnel underneath this building.””

I stared at him.

“You knew about this place?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because Elena built it as a hiding place.””

I froze.

“She built this?””

Adrian nodded.

“For her children.””

The words hit me.

Her children.

Not just Leo.

Not just Clara.

Both.

I looked at my son.

Then at my daughter.

Two children Elena had tried to protect.

Two children I almost never knew existed.

The first gunshot shattered the window.

Everyone dropped.

Leo screamed.

Marcus pulled us down.

Chaos exploded.

Glass fell.

People outside shouted.

Adrian grabbed the drawing from Clara.

“What are you doing?””

“I know what they’re after.””

He looked at the paper.

Then at me.

“Elena didn’t leave a message.””

He unfolded the drawing completely.

“She left a map.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Adrian pointed at the shadow figure drawn behind the house.

“That’s not a person.””

I looked closer.

Hidden inside the lines were numbers.

Coordinates.

A location.

Clara whispered:

“She knew.””

Adrian nodded.

“She knew someone would come looking.””

Another shot hit the wall.

Marcus shouted:

“We have thirty seconds!””

Adrian opened the hidden door behind an old shelf.

A dark tunnel appeared.

I grabbed Leo’s hand.

Clara stood beside me.

For the first time, she wasn’t a stranger.

She was my daughter.

And I was finally seeing the impossible truth.

But before we entered the tunnel, Adrian grabbed my arm.

“Rico.””

I looked at him.

“There’s one thing Elena never told you.””

“What?””

His eyes were filled with regret.

“Clara wasn’t the only secret she left behind.””

My blood ran cold.

“What else?””

Adrian looked toward Daniel.

Then whispered:

May you like

“Leo wasn’t your first child either.””

The tunnel door slammed open behind us.
