Chapter 8: The Child Elena Never Told Me About

“Leo wasn’t your first child either.””

The words followed me into the tunnel.

Even after the door slammed shut.

Even after the gunfire above us became distant.

Even after Marcus led us through the darkness with a flashlight in his hand.

I still heard them.

Over and over.

*Leo wasn’t your first child either.*

I walked forward carrying my son, but my mind was somewhere else.

Somewhere impossible.

I looked down at Leo.

His small arms were wrapped around my neck.

His eyes were closed.

He trusted me.

And that made the words hurt more.

Because I suddenly wondered how many things I didn’t know about my own family.

How many moments Elena carried secrets while I was too busy building a company.

How many times she looked at me and wanted to tell me the truth.

But didn’t.

The tunnel was narrow.

Old brick walls.

Cold air.

The sound of our footsteps echoed around us.

Behind me, Clara followed silently.

She looked just as shaken as I felt.

Because whatever Adrian meant…

it affected her too.

Finally, I stopped.

I turned around.

“Explain.””

Adrian stopped walking.

Daniel looked away.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Nobody wanted to answer.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“No.””

My voice was low.

“I’m done waiting.””

I looked at Adrian.

“You don’t get to drop something like that and keep walking.””

Adrian nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

“Then talk.””

He looked at Leo.

Then at Clara.

Then back at me.

“Before Leo was born, Elena was pregnant.””

The tunnel became silent.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel whispered:

“Adrian…”

“Rico needs to know.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer.

That was all I needed.

“You knew.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I knew part of it.””

“Part?””

My anger rose.

“You all know parts.””

I pointed at everyone.

“And I’m the only person who doesn’t know my own life.””

Adrian continued.

“Before Elena had Leo, she had another child.””

My heart pounded.

“No.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Adrian’s expression changed.

Sadness.

“The child didn’t survive.””

Silence.

The anger inside me suddenly froze.

A different pain replaced it.

A pain I didn’t understand.

Because I had never known.

Never grieved.

Never had the chance.

“Elena lost a child?””

Adrian nodded.

“Before you two married.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because she would have told me.””

The words came out instantly.

Because they were true.

Elena told me everything.

Or I thought she did.

Adrian looked at me.

“She wanted to.””

My chest tightened.

“But?””

“She was afraid.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Of what the truth would do.””

I looked at Clara.

Then Leo.

Then the darkness ahead.

“What does that have to do with my son?””

Adrian hesitated.

And I knew.

I knew before he spoke.

There was another secret.

“There’s more.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

“There’s always more.””

Adrian continued.

“The child Elena lost was connected to the same people who are after you now.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

He took a breath.

“Because Elena discovered the pregnancy wasn’t an accident.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“It means someone tried to erase her first child before you ever knew.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Your father.””

The words hit harder this time.

My father.

Again.

The man whose name had built my entire identity.

The man I had spent my childhood trying to impress.

The man everyone said made mistakes but loved his family.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Your father was involved in things you never knew about.””

“I don’t believe you.””

“You don’t have to.””

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old photograph.

Then handed it to me.

I looked down.

And my blood went cold.

It was Elena.

Young.

Pregnant.

Standing beside my father.

And beside them…

was Daniel.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked broken.

“Rico…”

“What is this?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I was there when she found out.””

My hands tightened around the photograph.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Again.

That word.

Protect.

Everyone used it like it erased everything.

It didn’t.

It just made the betrayal sound kinder.

I looked at Clara.

“My mother knew?””

Adrian nodded.

“She found out years later.””

“How?””

“Your father kept records.””

Clara touched the necklace.

“And this?””

Adrian looked at the pendant.

“This was Elena’s way of keeping proof.””

My eyes moved to it.

The small silver necklace.

A piece of jewelry that had connected strangers.

A piece of jewelry that had exposed a family secret.

“What proof?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Your father wasn’t just hiding money.””

The tunnel lights flickered.

“He was hiding children.””

Everyone went silent.

I felt Leo move in my arms.

He was awake now.

Listening.

I lowered my voice.

“What children?””

Adrian looked at Clara.

Then me.

“Children connected to powerful families.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means your father had enemies.””

“That still doesn’t explain anything.””

Adrian’s face became serious.

“Your father created a system.””

“A system?””

“To control people.””

I stared.

“By using their secrets.””

My stomach turned.

Adrian nodded.

“He collected information. Blackmail. Hidden identities. Family connections.””

I looked at Clara.

“My daughter was one of those secrets.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Elena discovered the system and realized Clara’s existence could expose everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And you helped her?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I tried.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I failed her once.””

That caught me.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel looked away.

“Your father asked me to make sure Elena stayed quiet.””

The tunnel went silent.

I stepped forward.

“You worked for him?””

“I did.””

My anger exploded.

“You were her friend.””

“I was young.””

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“It’s my shame.””

For the first time, Daniel didn’t look like a powerful businessman.

He looked like a man carrying years of guilt.

“I thought I could control it.””

He shook his head.

“I thought I could protect Elena without telling you.””

“Then what happened?””

His eyes met mine.

“Your father found out she knew.””

I felt the answer before he said it.

“And the crash?””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

My entire body went numb.

“Elena didn’t die in an accident.””

“No.””

“She was attacked.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Leo.

Then Clara.

My family.

The family Elena fought to protect.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Nobody answered.

Because there was no answer good enough.

Then Leo suddenly spoke.

“Daddy.””

I looked down.

“What?””

His eyes were open.

He looked toward Clara.

“Is she my sister?””

Nobody moved.

Clara covered her mouth.

I couldn’t speak.

Because I didn’t know how to explain a lifetime of secrets to a three-year-old.

But then Clara knelt beside us.

Tears running down her face.

“Yes.””

Leo looked at her.

“Mommy’s daughter?””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

Leo studied her for a moment.

Then reached out.

And touched her hand.

Just like he did in the restaurant.

The same way he trusted her before any of us knew why.

“She feels like Mommy.””

Clara broke.

She pulled him into a careful hug.

And for a moment…

the secrets disappeared.

There was only family.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I watched his face.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

He listened for several seconds.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“They found us.””

Marcus immediately raised his weapon.

“How?””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

Not at the entrance.

Not at the tunnel.

At Daniel.

My heart sank.

“What?””

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“Because someone gave them our location.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Adrian stared at him.

“You’re the only person who knew the tunnel existed.””

The silence was unbearable.

I looked at Daniel.

The man Elena trusted.

The man who knew every secret.

The man who had been protecting us.

Or pretending to.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Rico, listen to me.””

But before he could say another word, a red light appeared at the end of the tunnel.

A laser.

Aimed directly at Leo.

My body moved instantly.

I covered my son.

And in the darkness, a voice echoed:

“Finally.””

A man stepped out of the shadows.

And when I saw his face…

May you like

I understood why Elena had been afraid.

Because he looked exactly like my father.
