Chapter 9: The Ghost Behind the Family Name
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The man standing at the end of the tunnel looked impossible.
Same sharp jaw.
Same cold eyes.
Same expression I had seen countless times in old photographs.
My father.
Antonio Moretti.
The man who had been buried eight years ago.
The man whose name was carved into marble above the entrance of Moretti Industries.
The man who taught me how to negotiate.
How to win.
How to never show weakness.
The man who taught me everything except how to recognize a monster.
Leo was shaking in my arms.
I tightened my hold.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled.
A familiar smile.
A smile that made my stomach turn.
“You really don’t recognize me?””
My voice was cold.
“My father is dead.””
The man stepped closer.
The laser disappeared.
But that didn’t make me feel safer.
It made me more afraid.
Because whoever he was, he was confident.
“I know.””
His voice was calm.
“Your father is dead.””
The tunnel went silent.
Then he added:
“But I’m not.””
Clara whispered:
“No.””
She looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
I noticed.
“Clara.””
She looked at me.
“You know him?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
A pause.
“But my grandmother told me stories.””
The man’s eyes moved to her.
“Margaret always talked too much.””
Margaret stepped forward.
Her face was full of anger.
“You destroyed everything.””
The man looked at her.
“Still alive after all these years.””
“You should have been the one who disappeared.””
He smiled.
“And yet here we are.””
I looked between them.
Enough.
Enough secrets.
Enough people knowing more about my life than I did.
“Start talking.””
The man looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Rico.””
I almost laughed.
“Sorry?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
“For the fact that you spent your entire life believing you knew your family.””
His eyes moved toward Clara.
“Only to discover you never did.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
He tilted his head.
“My name is Luca Moretti.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way everyone reacted told me it should.
Daniel looked like he had seen a ghost.
“No.””
Luca smiled.
“Yes.””
Daniel whispered:
“You died.””
Luca looked at him.
“That was the idea.””
I stared at Daniel.
“What is happening?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Luca did.
“Your father had a brother.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“My father was an only child.””
“That’s what he wanted people to believe.””
The tunnel felt smaller.
I looked at Margaret.
She wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“Everyone knew.””
Nobody denied it.
My voice dropped.
“Everyone except me.””
Luca smiled.
“Exactly.””
I hated that smile.
Because it reminded me of my father.
The same confidence.
The same arrogance.
“You’re saying you’re my uncle?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide?””
His expression changed.
“Because your father tried to erase me.””
“Why?””
Luca looked at the drawing in Clara’s hand.
“Because I knew what he was doing.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You weren’t better than him.””
Luca looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“I was worse.””
The honesty surprised me.
He continued.
“Your father built an empire using secrets.””
He pointed toward himself.
“I built one using fear.””
My stomach tightened.
“And Elena discovered both.””
Luca nodded.
“She discovered that your father had created a network to control powerful families.””
“The blackmail system.””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
“I wanted it.””
The words were simple.
No excuse.
No denial.
Just truth.
I looked at Clara.
“And Elena’s children?””
Luca’s expression softened slightly.
“She wanted to use them as proof.””
“What?””
“She discovered records of every child connected to the network.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why would children matter?””
Luca looked at me.
“Because children were the reason people became controllable.””
I didn’t understand.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Family.””
Everyone looked at him.
Adrian continued:
“Your father knew powerful people would do anything to protect their children.””
My hands tightened.
“So he collected information about families.””
“Yes.””
“And Elena found it.””
“Yes.””
Luca nodded.
“She found everything.””
My voice became quiet.
“Then why did she die?””
The question I had carried for two years.
The question that never left me.
Luca’s expression changed.
“She didn’t.””
The same impossible answer.
Again.
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because everyone was wrong.””
“Then where is she?””
Silence.
Real silence.
The kind that means the answer is something you don’t want.
Luca looked at Clara.
Then at Leo.
Then at me.
“She’s alive.””
My heart stopped.
The world stopped.
No.
That was impossible.
I wanted to believe it.
Every part of me wanted to.
But hope was dangerous.
Hope could destroy you.
“You’re lying.””
Luca shook his head.
“I wish I was.””
“Where is she?””
He looked away.
“Hidden.””
“By who?””
A pause.
Then:
“By herself.””
I felt anger rise.
“My wife abandoned me?””
“No.””
Luca’s voice became sharper.
“She sacrificed herself.””
“For what?””
“For you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“For me?””
“For your son.””
My eyes moved to Leo.
Luca continued.
“After the crash, Elena knew they would come after the children.””
“Children.””
He looked at Clara.
“And she was right.””
Clara covered her mouth.
I looked at him.
“You’re telling me Elena stayed away from us to protect us?””
“Yes.””
“Two years.””
“Yes.””
“Two years she let me believe she was dead.””
Luca looked down.
“She thought it was the only way.””
My anger and grief collided.
I didn’t know whether to scream or collapse.
Because if Elena was alive…
Then every day I mourned her was a lie.
Every memory.
Every goodbye.
Everything.
Then Leo whispered:
“Mommy is alive?””
Nobody moved.
I looked at my son.
A child who had spent years missing his mother.
A child who remembered things adults tried to bury.
I knelt down.
“I don’t know, buddy.””
Leo looked at Luca.
“Do you know my mommy?””
Luca looked at him.
And for the first time…
the man who seemed fearless looked human.
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
Luca opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
A sound came from above.
A vibration.
Then Marcus looked at his phone.
His face changed.
“What?””
I turned.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“The building is surrounded.””
“How many?””
He hesitated.
“Too many.””
Luca looked toward the tunnel entrance.
“They’re not here for me.””
Everyone understood.
They were here for us.
“For the children.””
I stepped in front of Leo and Clara.
“No one touches them.””
Luca looked at me.
For the first time, there was something like respect in his eyes.
“You sound like your father.””
I hated that.
“Don’t compare me to him.””
Luca nodded.
“You’re right.””
A pause.
“You’re better.””
The tunnel shook.
Someone was forcing the entrance.
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“Rico.””
I looked at him.
His face was full of regret.
“I need to tell you something.””
I stared.
“What now?””
He swallowed.
“The reason Elena trusted me…”
A pause.
“…was because I was the one who helped her fake her death.””
The words hit me.
“You?””
Daniel nodded.
“I created the accident report.””
My fists tightened.
“You let me bury my wife.””
“I let you believe she was gone.””
“That’s the same thing.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
The door behind us began to crack.
Everyone prepared.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“And there’s one more thing.””
I didn’t want to hear it.
But I did.
“Your father wasn’t the one who ordered Elena’s death.””
The tunnel became silent.
I stared.
“Then who?””
Daniel looked at Clara.
Then Leo.
Then me.
“The person Elena trusted after you.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Daniel whispered the name.
A name that made everyone turn.
A name that changed everything.
“Margaret.””
I looked at the old woman.
She didn’t deny it.
She just cried.
And then she said:
“I didn’t kill Elena.””
May you like
A pause.
“But I was the reason she had to disappear.””
