Chapter 13: The Woman Who Stole Another Woman's Life
Nobody spoke.
The district attorney placed the photograph beneath the conference room light.
"There are two women," she explained.
"Both have used the identity Eleanor Whitmore at different times.""
I stared at the image.
One woman stood beside Dr. Samuel Reed.
The other appeared behind the doorway.
They had nearly identical faces.
The same silver-gray hair.
The same sharp cheekbones.
The same narrow eyes.
But I noticed something that made my stomach tighten.
The woman beside the doctor wore a diamond necklace.
The woman behind the doorway wore a thin gold chain.
I had seen that gold chain before.
In photographs from Marcus's childhood.
"Who are they?"" I whispered.
The district attorney opened another folder.
"The woman you know as Eleanor Whitmore is actually Evelyn Whitmore. She is Eleanor's identical twin sister.""
Marcus suddenly stood.
"That's impossible.""
The district attorney didn't look surprised.
"Your father knew about the arrangement. So did several people connected to the Whitmore family.""
Marcus shook his head.
"My mother doesn't have a twin.""
"She does. Evelyn was removed from the family records following a legal dispute nearly forty years ago.""
I looked at Marcus.
"Which one raised you?""
He looked completely lost.
"I don't know.""
The district attorney continued.
"The original Eleanor married Marcus's father, Jonathan Whitmore. Evelyn later assumed her sister's identity to manage several family properties and financial arrangements.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Why?""
"Because Eleanor had been hospitalized following a serious accident. Evelyn claimed that her sister had died. She then used her identity to maintain control of the family assets.""
I stared at the photograph.
"So the woman who slapped me...""
"Was Evelyn," the district attorney replied.
Marcus sat down heavily.
"No.""
She placed a birth certificate on the table.
"Marcus's biological mother is Eleanor. The woman who raised him during most of his childhood was Evelyn.""
Marcus covered his mouth.
"Where is my real mother?""
The district attorney turned another page.
"Alive.""
His eyes filled.
"Where?""
"She has been living under another name in a protected residential facility for the last five years.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Why did Evelyn take her identity?""
"Money," the district attorney answered.
"And revenge.""
She explained that the original Eleanor had discovered Evelyn's financial misconduct decades earlier. Evelyn had forged documents, manipulated family assets, and eventually arranged to have her sister declared legally incompetent.
But Eleanor had refused to cooperate.
So Evelyn disappeared her.
For years, Evelyn controlled the Whitmore family business while pretending to be the woman she had betrayed.
And she had used that position to approach my father.
"Why did she target Thomas?"" I asked.
"Because your father had discovered the identity fraud. He threatened to expose her.""
Daniel opened the documents from the vault.
"That explains the forged marriage certificate.""
The district attorney nodded.
"It also explains why the original trust agreement was so important. Your father had evidence that could connect Evelyn to decades of financial fraud.""
Marcus stared at the table.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
I looked at him.
"Because you never asked the right questions.""
He didn't respond.
An hour later, we received permission to visit the protected facility where the real Eleanor was staying.
Marcus insisted on coming.
Victoria agreed, but only because she wanted answers.
The facility was a quiet residence surrounded by gardens. A nurse escorted us to a small sitting room.
An elderly woman sat beside the window.
Her silver hair was shorter than Evelyn's.
Her face was thinner.
But when Marcus entered, she stood.
"Marcus?""
He froze.
The woman began crying.
"My boy.""
Marcus walked toward her slowly.
"Mom?""
She reached for his face.
He dropped to his knees and embraced her.
For several seconds, he couldn't speak.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
Eleanor held his head against her shoulder.
"You didn't know, sweetheart.""
"I should have known.""
She pulled away and looked at him.
"Your aunt spent years making sure you believed I had abandoned you.""
Marcus began crying harder.
I stood near the doorway.
The real Eleanor looked at me.
"You're Nia.""
I nodded.
She approached and gently touched my cheek.
I flinched.
She noticed immediately.
"She hit you.""
It wasn't a question.
I nodded.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"That woman has been hurting people for most of her life.""
Victoria stepped forward.
"Do you know what happened to my father?""
Eleanor looked at her.
"Yes.""
Victoria's voice broke.
"Then tell us.""
Eleanor sat down.
She folded her hands.
"Your father discovered that Evelyn had been using forged identities to move money through the family foundation. He threatened to report her. She responded by threatening everyone he loved.""
"Did she kill him?"" I asked.
Eleanor looked toward the window.
"She arranged the circumstances. But she didn't act alone.""
Marcus lowered his head.
"Dr. Reed?""
Eleanor nodded.
"He was being paid to falsify medical records and administer medication outside the approved treatment plan.""
Victoria covered her mouth.
"What happened to Margaret?""
"Margaret witnessed Evelyn threatening Thomas. Evelyn arranged for her to be moved to a private facility and used medication to keep her confused.""
I felt sick.
"And Richard?""
"He helped your father preserve the evidence. Evelyn tried to have him killed. He disappeared before she could reach him.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Do you have proof?""
Eleanor nodded.
"There's a recording in the original Whitmore family vault.""
Marcus looked up.
"What vault?""
Eleanor gave him an address.
"Your grandfather built it beneath the old estate. Evelyn doesn't know I kept the second key.""
She reached into a small wooden box beside her chair.
Inside was a brass key.
I recognized the design immediately.
It matched the key my father had given me.
Eleanor placed it in my hand.
"Thomas asked me to keep this safe. He said that if anything happened to him, his daughters would eventually need it.""
I stared at her.
"My father trusted you?""
She smiled sadly.
"He trusted the real Eleanor Whitmore.""
Then she looked at Marcus.
"And he wanted you to have one more chance to tell the truth.""
Marcus lowered his head.
I didn't know what to say.
But before anyone could respond, a nurse rushed into the room.
"Mrs. Whitmore, we have a problem.""
Eleanor stood.
"What happened?""
"The security cameras have been disabled.""
Daniel immediately reached for his phone.
The nurse continued.
"Someone entered through the rear entrance.""
A crash sounded in the hallway.
Marcus grabbed my arm.
"Get down!""
The sitting room door flew open.
A man in a dark jacket stood in the doorway.
Behind him was Evelyn.
She wore the same champagne-colored satin gown from the night she had slapped me.
Her hair was perfectly arranged.
Her smile was back.
"Well," she said, looking at me, "it seems the family reunion has become rather crowded.""
The district attorney reached for her phone.
Evelyn raised a hand.
"Don't bother. The police are already on their way.""
She looked at the key in my hand.
"Give that to me, Nia.""
I closed my fingers around it.
"No.""
Her smile disappeared.
"Then I suppose we'll have to do this the difficult way.""
She looked at Marcus.
"Move aside, darling.""
Marcus stepped between us.
"No.""
Evelyn stared at him.
For the first time, her expression cracked.
"Don't be ridiculous. I'm your mother.""
He looked toward the woman sitting beside the window.
"No. She's my mother.""
Evelyn's face twisted.
Then she reached into her purse.
And the real Eleanor screamed.
"Marcus! Get away from her!""
A loud crack shattered the silence.
May you like
The window behind us exploded.
And the woman who had controlled both families for decades finally lost control of the room.
