Chapter 5: The Signature That Changed Everything
Marcus stood beside the desk, staring at the dead telephone.
I waited.
He didn't speak.
"What did you sign three years ago?"" I asked.
He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Nia, it's complicated.""
"Then simplify it.""
He looked toward Daniel.
"Can we talk privately?""
"No," Daniel replied.
"Whatever concerns the Northstar trust needs to be discussed with counsel present.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Of course. You two have already decided I'm guilty.""
I folded my arms.
"Your mother just told us to ask you about a document. Why don't you tell us what it is?""
He walked to the window.
"Three years ago, the family business was in trouble. We had a major loan coming due, and the bank threatened to seize several properties.""
"How much?""
"Four million.""
I stared at him.
"Four million dollars?""
He nodded.
"Eleanor told me she had arranged an emergency financial agreement. She said it was backed by the family foundation.""
"And?""
"She needed my signature.""
I took a step closer.
"What did the agreement say?""
"That I was authorizing temporary management of certain investment accounts.""
"Whose accounts?""
He didn't answer immediately.
Then he whispered, "Northstar Holdings.""
My stomach dropped.
"You authorized access to my father's company?""
"I didn't know that's what it was!""
"You signed a document without reading it?""
"I trusted my mother!""
I stared at him.
"And you couldn't trust your wife enough to ask?""
He looked away.
Daniel opened his briefcase.
"Do you have a copy?""
Marcus nodded and walked to a cabinet.
He removed a black document box and placed it on the desk.
Inside were contracts, bank statements, and several envelopes.
Daniel began examining them.
After a few minutes, he stopped.
"Marcus, this document is not a temporary management authorization.""
Marcus frowned.
"What?""
Daniel turned the page.
"This is a limited power of attorney.""
"That's what my mother told me.""
"No. Look at the second paragraph.""
Marcus leaned forward.
Daniel read aloud.
"The undersigned grants Eleanor Whitmore authority to manage, transfer, pledge, and liquidate specified financial assets held under the Northstar Holdings structure.""
Marcus went pale.
"That can't be right.""
"It gets worse," Daniel said.
He turned another page.
"The agreement includes a declaration that the principal is aware of the transfer and has given informed consent.""
I looked at Marcus.
"Who is listed as the principal?""
Daniel pointed to the name.
Nia Carter.
My name.
I felt my stomach twist.
"That's my signature.""
Marcus shook his head.
"No. I didn't sign your name.""
"Then who did?""
He stared at the document.
"I don't know.""
Daniel examined the final page.
"There's a witness signature.""
He turned the paper toward me.
The witness was Eleanor Whitmore.
I laughed once, without humor.
"Of course.""
Marcus sat down heavily.
"I swear I didn't know.""
I looked at him.
"You knew enough to sign something that gave your mother access to my inheritance.""
"I thought I was helping the family.""
"Which family, Marcus?""
He covered his face.
For a moment, the room was quiet.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and walked toward the door.
When he returned, his expression had changed.
"The bank has confirmed that the authorization was used to open a credit facility.""
"How much?"" I asked.
"Six million dollars.""
Marcus stood.
"Six?""
Daniel nodded.
"And the collateral was a portion of the Northstar investment portfolio.""
I looked at the document.
"Can they take it?""
"Not if we establish the authorization was fraudulent. But we need the original records.""
Marcus looked terrified.
"Where are they?""
Daniel glanced at him.
"Your mother probably knows.""
We spent the next hour searching Eleanor's study.
Her desk drawers had been emptied. The filing cabinets were open. Several shelves were missing books and folders.
She had taken almost everything.
But she had left one thing behind.
A small silver picture frame.
I picked it up.
The photograph showed Eleanor standing with a younger woman outside a hospital.
The woman was holding a newborn baby.
I turned the frame over.
A date had been written on the back.
Twenty-nine years earlier.
The baby's name was Victoria.
I stared at the photograph.
"Why would Eleanor have this?""
Marcus came to stand beside me.
"Maybe she knew Victoria's mother.""
"Maybe.""
I examined the woman's face.
She looked exhausted.
But there was something else.
She was wearing a hospital bracelet.
I zoomed in on the image with my phone.
The bracelet displayed a name.
Margaret Carter.
My father's former partner.
I looked at Marcus.
"Your mother knew Victoria from birth.""
He swallowed.
"Apparently.""
"Why would she keep this hidden for almost thirty years?""
Before he could answer, I noticed a small envelope tucked behind the frame.
It contained a handwritten note.
The handwriting was Eleanor's.
If the girl ever contacts Thomas, remind her what happened to her mother.
My hands began shaking.
"Marcus.""
He read the note.
His face drained of color.
"What does that mean?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
Then I noticed something written beneath the message.
A telephone number.
And a name.
*Dr. Samuel Reed.*
Daniel immediately took out his phone.
"I know that name.""
"Who is he?""
"Your father's former cardiologist.""
My heart stopped.
"Wasn't he the doctor who treated my father before he died?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
I stared at Eleanor's note.
The woman who had spent six years telling my husband I was unstable had kept a photograph of my father's other daughter.
She had known the woman who gave birth to her.
And she had left a warning about what happened to her.
Suddenly, Marcus grabbed my arm.
"Nia, we need to leave.""
I pulled away.
"Why?""
He pointed toward the front window.
A black SUV had stopped outside the mansion.
Two men stepped out.
One walked toward the front entrance.
The other remained beside the vehicle, holding a phone to his ear.
Marcus looked through the glass.
"I recognize them.""
"Who are they?""
"My mother's security contractors.""
Daniel moved toward the door.
"Nobody leaves this room until we know why they're here.""
Then the doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
Marcus's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from Eleanor.
*MOM: Give them the documents. Do not make me ask twice.*
I looked at the men outside.
Then at the photograph in my hand.
My father had spent years trying to protect me from this family.
May you like
But someone had apparently been trying to silence Victoria long before I ever met Marcus.
And now I was beginning to understand why.
