Chapter 14: The Last Secret in the Vault

The sound of breaking glass was followed by shouting.

Daniel pulled me behind the sofa.

Marcus pushed Victoria toward the floor while the district attorney called for immediate assistance.

Evelyn stood in the doorway, staring at the shattered window.

Her hired man grabbed her arm.

"Move!""

She pulled away.

"Get the key!""

The man rushed toward me.

Marcus intercepted him.

They crashed against the coffee table, sending papers and a lamp flying.

I clutched the brass key.

Then the real Eleanor grabbed my wrist.

"Go," she whispered.

"What?""

"Take the key. Get out of here.""

"I'm not leaving you.""

She looked directly into my eyes.

"Your father didn't protect you all these years so you could lose everything today.""

The district attorney pulled me toward the hallway.

"Move!""

We ran.

Behind us, I heard Marcus shouting.

Then a heavy thud.

I turned.

He was on the floor.

Evelyn stood above him.

"Look what you've done," she said.

Marcus looked up at her.

"You did this.""

She slapped him.

Not hard enough to knock him down.

But hard enough to make him understand that she had never loved him the way he had believed.

"You ungrateful boy," she hissed.

"I gave you everything.""

Marcus slowly stood.

"No. You stole everything.""

The first police officers entered the building.

Evelyn looked toward the hallway.

For one second, her eyes met mine.

Then she ran.

By the time the officers secured the facility, Evelyn had disappeared through a service exit.

Her hired man was arrested.

Marcus suffered a cut above his eyebrow but refused medical treatment until he knew everyone else was safe.

The real Eleanor was taken to a secure location.

Victoria stayed with Margaret.

And Daniel insisted that we go directly to the old Whitmore estate.

The vault.

The last place my father had hidden evidence.

We arrived shortly after midnight.

The estate had been abandoned for years.

Weeds covered the driveway, and the windows were boarded up. A rusted gate hung from one hinge.

Richard was waiting inside.

He had arrived separately.

When he saw the brass key in my hand, he nodded.

"Your father knew you'd find it.""

We followed him downstairs.

Behind an old wine cellar was a reinforced steel door.

Daniel examined the lock.

"This is a serious security system.""

Richard smiled faintly.

"Thomas designed it himself.""

I inserted the key.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room filled with filing cabinets, storage boxes, and an old wooden desk.

On the desk sat a photograph of my father.

Beside it were two envelopes.

One had my name.

The other had Victoria's.

I picked up mine.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

My darling Nia,

If you have reached this room, then the people who tried to steal our family's future have finally exposed themselves.

I wish I could have been there to explain everything.

I wish I could have introduced you to your sister properly.

And I wish I could have protected your mother from the pain she was forced to endure.

I stopped reading.

My father had known.

He had known Eleanor was in danger.

He had known Victoria was alive.

He had known that someone was trying to destroy our family.

And he had prepared for a future in which he might not be there.

I continued.

There is something I never told you about the Whitmore family.

Eleanor and I were never married. But years ago, I discovered that Evelyn had arranged for a false marriage record to be entered into the registry.

The person who helped her was my own attorney.

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

The letter continued.

His name was Paul Henderson.

He was also the person who introduced Dr. Reed to Evelyn.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Paul Henderson had represented Eleanor in the trust challenge.

The same attorney who had arranged Margaret's illegal transfer.

Everything was connected.

I read the final paragraph.

But the most important evidence is not in this letter.

Look beneath the desk.

Richard helped me move the heavy wooden desk.

A narrow compartment was built into the floor.

Inside was a small black case.

I opened it.

There were bank records, medical documents, photographs, and a digital recorder.

But something else caught my attention.

A handwritten list of payments.

The names included:

- Dr. Samuel Reed. - Paul Henderson.

- Richard Cole. - Evelyn Whitmore. - Marcus Whitmore.

I stared at the final name.

Marcus.

My husband had been paid.

Not just promised money.

Paid.

The dates stretched across three years.

Daniel examined the entries.

"These are transfers from a private account.""

"Whose account?""

He checked the final page.

Then looked at me.

"Your father's.""

I felt confused.

"Why would my father pay Marcus?""

Richard stepped closer.

"Because Thomas was trying to protect him.""

I turned.

"What?""

Richard opened another folder.

"Your father discovered that Evelyn had recruited Marcus into the scheme. He secretly arranged payments to keep Marcus cooperating with an investigation.""

I stared at him.

"You're saying my father knew Marcus was involved?""

Richard nodded.

"But he believed Marcus could still help expose Evelyn.""

I looked at the payment records again.

"Then why didn't he tell me?""

"Because he didn't want you to become a target.""

My eyes filled.

Another decision my father had made to protect me.

Another secret that had shaped my life.

Daniel picked up the recorder.

"Let's hear the final recording.""

He pressed play.

My father's voice filled the vault.

"Marcus, you have one opportunity to make this right.""

There was a pause.

Then Marcus's younger voice.

"What do you want me to do?""

"Tell the truth.""

"My mother will destroy me.""

"Then stop protecting the woman who is destroying everyone else.""

Marcus sounded frightened.

"I can't.""

My father sighed.

"Then I hope you understand what you're choosing.""

A second voice entered.

Evelyn.

"Thomas, stop trying to turn my nephew against me.""

My father replied:

"He's not your nephew anymore than you're Eleanor.""

Silence.

Then Evelyn laughed.

"You think anyone will believe you?""

My father answered calmly.

"They will when they see the documents.""

Evelyn's voice became cold.

"Then perhaps you shouldn't be alive to show them.""

The recording stopped.

I stared at the machine.

There it was.

A direct threat.

But the recording wasn't finished.

Daniel discovered a second file.

He pressed play.

This time, my father's voice was weaker.

"Richard, if you're hearing this, I may not have much time.""

A pause.

"There's one more thing. The money Evelyn stole was never the real prize.""

I leaned closer.

My father continued.

"The Whitmore foundation owns a property portfolio worth more than forty million dollars. Evelyn has been using the foundation to hide the ownership.""

Daniel looked at me.

Forty million.

My father continued.

"The properties were purchased with stolen money. But the original funding came from a charitable account I established for both my daughters.""

I stared at the screen.

"Both daughters?""

Richard nodded.

"Your father wanted the foundation to become yours and Victoria's.""

The recording continued.

"If my daughters ever recover those assets, they must not keep the money.""

I frowned.

"What?""

My father's final words came slowly.

"Give it to the women who were supposed to receive it. The women Eleanor used as a shield. The women whose names she placed on charitable reports while stealing every dollar.""

I felt tears slide down my face.

My father hadn't built a fortune for us to fight over.

He had built something meant to help people.

And Evelyn had turned it into a weapon.

Daniel carefully removed the documents.

"We have enough to dismantle the entire operation.""

Then Richard found one final envelope.

It contained a letter addressed to Marcus.

I opened it.

Marcus,

I know you are afraid of Evelyn. But fear is not an excuse to betray the people who trust you.

You have a choice.

You can become the man she wants you to be, or you can become the man Nia deserves.

I hope you choose wisely.

I folded the letter.

For a moment, I felt sorry for Marcus.

Then I remembered the slap.

The forged documents.

The hospital recording.

And the years I had spent begging him to believe me.

He had been given a choice.

He had made it.

At 3:18 a.m., Daniel received a call.

Evelyn had been located.

She was at the private airport.

A flight was scheduled to leave in forty minutes.

The police were moving in.

I looked at the documents in my hands.

"Will she escape?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not this time.""

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*UNKNOWN: Evelyn is not the person you should be afraid of.*

A second message appeared.

*UNKNOWN: The original Eleanor has been lying to you about one thing.*

I stared at the screen.

Then a photograph arrived.

It showed my father standing outside the Whitmore estate.

Beside him was a young woman.

A woman I recognized immediately.

Margaret.

But the date printed beneath the photograph was impossible.

It was taken three months after my father supposedly died.

I looked at Richard.

"Is this real?""

His face went pale.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"Thomas Carter may never have died.""
