Chapter 10: The Grave That Held A Secret

The lock clicked once.

Then again.

Whoever was outside wasn’t trying to break in.

They wanted us to know they were there.

Marcus moved toward the side exit, but I grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

He looked at me.

“For what?””

I stared at the door.

For twenty years, I had lived with unanswered questions.

Twenty years believing the worst night of my life had been the end of Lena’s story.

Now someone was standing outside trying to stop us from finding the truth.

I wasn’t running.

Not this time.

“Bear,” Marcus whispered.

I shook my head.

“No more running.””

Eli looked between us.

“What do we do?””

I looked at him.

The boy who had lost his mother.

The boy who had been locked away.

The boy who was carrying the truth everyone else wanted buried.

“We stay together.””

The words had barely left my mouth when the door exploded inward.

Wood splintered.

Rocket barked.

Marcus pulled Eli down.

I moved toward the opening.

A man stepped through the smoke and dust.

Not Eli’s father.

Someone else.

Older.

Wearing a dark jacket.

Calm.

Too calm.

He looked around the room.

Then smiled.

“Bear.””

I recognized him immediately.

Not because I knew him personally.

Because I had seen his face in the photographs.

One of the men standing beside Eli’s father.

One of the men Lena was trying to expose.

Marcus whispered his name.

“Calvin.””

The man smiled.

“Still remembering names, Marcus? I’m impressed.””

I stepped forward.

“What do you want?””

Calvin looked at Eli.

“The phone.””

Eli held it tighter.

“You’re not getting it.””

Calvin laughed softly.

“That’s exactly what Lena would have said.””

My jaw tightened.

“You knew her.””

“I knew everyone involved.””

He walked slowly around the room.

“You think this is about one woman disappearing?””

He shook his head.

“This is about a system that survives because people know when to stay quiet.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You were always a coward.””

Calvin’s smile disappeared.

“You’re the one who helped me.””

The words hit.

I looked at Marcus.

He didn’t deny it.

And that hurt more than I expected.

Calvin noticed.

“Your brother was never the hero you imagined.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Neither were you.””

A tense silence filled the room.

Then Calvin reached inside his jacket.

I moved instantly.

But he didn’t pull a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

And threw it onto the table.

I looked down.

It was Lena.

Alive.

Standing outside the cemetery.

The same cemetery where I buried her.

The same place where I thought her story ended.

“When was this taken?”” I asked.

Calvin smiled.

“Tonight.””

My stomach tightened.

“She’s there.””

Calvin nodded.

“And she’s waiting.””

I looked at him.

“Why would you help us find her?””

His expression changed.

Because for the first time, he looked afraid.

“Because she knows something I don’t.””

The answer surprised me.

“What?””

Calvin looked at the phone.

“The final recording.””

Eli stared.

“There’s another video?””

Calvin nodded.

“Your mother made three copies.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Three?””

“Yes.””

“Where are the others?””

Calvin looked at me.

“One was hidden.””

A pause.

“One was destroyed.””

Then he pointed at Eli.

“And one is waiting for him.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Eli.

He looked terrified.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

Whatever Lena left behind wasn’t meant for me.

It was meant for her son.

Calvin stepped back.

“You have until midnight.””

“For what?””

“To decide whether you want the truth.””

He smiled.

“Because once you hear the last recording, there’s no going back.””

The lights flickered.

Then the mechanic shop went dark.

When they came back on…

Calvin was gone.

Only the photograph remained.

May you like

And written on the back were four words.

THE GRAVE REMEMBERS EVERYTHING.
