Chapter 12: The Mother Who Stayed Away

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Marcus.

Not Eli.

Even Rocket stood completely still.

Because the impossible had happened twice in one night.

A dead woman.

A missing man.

Both standing in front of me.

Eli saw her first.

“Mom?””

The word came out like a question.

Like he was afraid saying it too loudly would make her disappear.

Lena took one step forward.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Eli.””

He didn’t move.

Not immediately.

Nine years of pain held him in place.

Nine years of wondering why the person he loved most never came back.

Then he ran.

Lena dropped to her knees.

And for the first time in years, a mother held her son.

I looked away.

Not because I didn’t want to see.

Because I did.

Too much.

Marcus stood beside me.

“She always wanted that moment.””

I looked at him.

“You knew she was here.””

He nodded.

“And you kept her from me.””

His eyes dropped.

“I thought I was protecting everyone.””

“You keep saying that.””

I stepped closer.

“But you were protecting the secret.””

Marcus didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

Eli’s father watched the reunion with a cold expression.

No emotion.

No regret.

Just calculation.

“You always were sentimental, Bear.””

I turned.

“You.””

He smiled.

“After all these years.””

Lena stood.

She moved beside Eli.

Not behind him.

Beside him.

Like she was ready to fight.

“Leave.””

Her voice was stronger than I expected.

Eli’s father laughed.

“You still think you can order me around?””

“You lost.””

He smiled.

“Did I?””

He looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

Then at Eli.

“You really think the truth makes you free?””

I stepped forward.

“The truth destroys people like you.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed at Lena.

“The truth destroys everyone.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he reached into his pocket.

My body reacted.

But instead of a weapon, he pulled out a document.

He threw it toward me.

I caught it.

A birth certificate.

I looked down.

My name.

Lena’s name.

And under father…

Blank.

My eyes lifted.

“What is this?””

Eli’s father smiled.

“Your proof.””

“Of what?””

“That Lena never wanted you to know.””

Lena’s face changed.

“Don’t listen to him.””

But I had already seen enough.

The paper was old.

Real.

And there was another document attached.

A medical report.

I read the first line.

Then the second.

My hands went cold.

Marcus saw my expression.

“What?””

I looked at Lena.

“What happened the night Eli was born?””

Her face broke.

Not fear.

Pain.

“Bear…”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“Tell me.””

Eli looked between us.

“Mom?””

Lena closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“The reason I kept Eli away from you…”

A tear rolled down her face.

“Was because I thought you would hate him.””

The words hit harder than anything before.

I looked at Eli.

My son.

The boy I had met hours ago.

The boy I had protected without knowing why.

The boy who had my eyes.

“Why would I hate him?””

Lena looked at me.

“Because he was born the night Marcus betrayed you.””

Marcus went still.

“What?””

Lena looked at him.

“You never told him.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

The cemetery became silent.

Lena took a breath.

“Marcus wasn’t protecting us.””

She looked at me.

“He was protecting the person who started all of this.””

My eyes moved to Marcus.

The man I thought was my brother.

The man who saved us.

The man who lied.

Lena whispered:

“Bear…”

May you like

She pointed at Marcus.

“Your brother was the one who tried to kill me.””
