Chapter 11: The Last Recording

The cemetery looked exactly the same.

That was the worst part.

After twenty years, I expected something different.

A sign.

A broken tree.

A reminder that time had moved on.

But the same road led there.

The same hill.

The same cold wind.

The same silence.

Like the earth had been waiting for me.

Eli walked beside me.

Rocket followed close.

Marcus stayed behind us.

I could feel his eyes on me.

Waiting for forgiveness.

Waiting for something I wasn’t ready to give.

We reached the grave.

My grave.

The one I had visited thousands of times.

The one I had cursed.

The one I had blamed for taking Lena away.

Eli looked at the stone.

“Is this where you buried my mom?””

I nodded.

He touched the name.

“Lena.””

His voice cracked.

“She was really here?””

I looked at the ground.

“Yes.””

Then I corrected myself.

“No.””

I swallowed.

“She was never here.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“There’s something you need to see.””

He moved to the side of the grave.

Near the base of the stone was a small metal plate.

I had never noticed it before.

Because I never looked.

I was always staring at the name.

Not what was underneath.

Marcus removed the plate.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small device.

A recording chip.

Eli stared.

“Is that it?””

Marcus nodded.

“The last recording.””

My hands felt heavy as I picked it up.

A tiny piece of plastic.

Containing years of secrets.

Containing answers I had begged the universe for.

I inserted it into the old player Marcus carried.

Static filled the air.

Then Lena’s voice.

“Eli.””

The boy froze.

His eyes filled instantly.

“Mom?””

He moved closer.

The recording continued.

“If you’re hearing this, then something happened that forced the truth out.””

A pause.

“I’m sorry.””

Eli covered his mouth.

Lena continued.

“I wanted to come back sooner. Every day, I wanted to run to you.””

Her voice broke.

“But I couldn’t.””

The wind moved through the trees.

Nobody spoke.

“I need you to understand something. I never abandoned you.””

Eli started crying silently.

“I left because staying would have killed you.””

I looked at him.

At the boy who spent years believing he wasn’t worth staying for.

Lena’s voice continued.

“And Bear…”

My body froze.

“Please listen carefully.””

I stepped closer to the recorder.

“You think I chose Marcus because he was stronger.””

A pause.

“You think I trusted him more.””

The recording crackled.

“I chose him because you were already broken, Bear.””

My chest tightened.

“You lost so much. You were carrying anger that would destroy you.””

Marcus looked down.

Lena continued.

“I knew if you found out I was alive, you would come after everyone responsible.””

A quiet breath.

“And you would never stop.””

I almost laughed.

Because she was right.

The recording continued.

“But there was something I never told you.””

The sound became distorted.

Then clear again.

“Eli is not just my son.””

Marcus looked at me.

I stared at the recorder.

Lena’s next words changed everything.

“He is yours.””

The world went silent.

I heard nothing.

Not the wind.

Not the trees.

Not Marcus.

Nothing.

Eli looked at me.

“What?””

I couldn’t move.

The recording continued.

“Bear, I wanted to tell you before everything happened.””

My breathing became uneven.

“But when I discovered the truth about Eli’s father, I knew telling you would put him in danger.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

“No,” I whispered.

Lena continued.

“You deserve to know the truth.””

A pause.

“The night you thought I died…”

The recording suddenly cut.

Static.

Then nothing.

The player went silent.

“No.””

I hit the device.

“Play it again.””

Marcus grabbed my shoulder.

“It’s damaged.””

“No.””

I pushed him away.

“Play it again.””

Then Eli spoke.

Quietly.

“Bear.””

I looked at him.

His face was full of confusion.

And something else.

Hope.

“My dad isn’t my real dad?””

Nobody answered.

Because we didn’t know how to say it.

A sound came from behind us.

A slow clap.

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the edge of the cemetery.

Eli’s father.

Smiling.

“I was wondering when you’d finally learn.””

My blood went cold.

May you like

Because he wasn’t alone.

Behind him stood Lena.
