Chapter 11: The Brother Nobody Knew
Nobody spoke.
The photograph sat on the desk.
Small.
Simple.
But powerful enough to change everything.
Nia looked at Bear.
Slowly.
“Brothers?””
Bear didn’t answer.
She didn’t need him to.
His silence told her the truth.
“You knew.””
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it shattered something inside her.
“You knew my father.””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
Bear swallowed.
“Every day I wasn’t with you.””
Nia stepped back.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t understand what it feels like to find out your entire life was built by people leaving things out.””
Bear looked like he wanted to reach for her.
But he didn’t.
Maybe because he knew he had no right.
Her mother stepped forward.
“Nia, there is more.””
Nia laughed softly.
“Of course there is.””
She wiped her eyes.
“There is always more.””
The tape continued playing.
Her grandmother’s voice returned.
“Bear and your father were not just brothers. They were partners.””
Nia looked at the recording.
“They worked together to expose Daniel.””
The room felt colder.
“Your father found the evidence.””
Bear nodded.
“And I helped him hide it.””
Nia looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel had people everywhere.””
“Then what happened?””
Bear looked at the floor.
“The night we were going to release everything…”
He stopped.
Nia waited.
“Your father disappeared.””
The words landed heavily.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
“Dead?””
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
Her mother closed her eyes.
“We never found him.””
Nia stared.
“All these years…”
Her voice broke.
“You didn’t know if he was alive?””
Bear shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
“You people are unbelievable.””
Nia turned.
“What?””
Daniel leaned against the doorway.
“You think your father was some hero?””
Bear’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
Daniel ignored him.
“He made mistakes.””
“Everyone does.””
Nia looked at him.
“But not everyone destroys families.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You think you know what happened.””
“No.””
She held up the box.
“I know I’m finally learning.””
For the first time, Daniel looked at her like she was a threat.
Not a child.
Not someone to manipulate.
A threat.
Bear noticed.
“Nia.””
She looked at him.
“Yeah?””
“Take the drive.””
“What?””
“Take it and go.””
She stared.
“Where?””
“Anywhere away from here.””
“No.””
“Nia.””
“No.””
Her voice became firm.
“I’m done running from a story I never chose.””
Her mother smiled sadly.
“You sound like your grandmother.””
Nia looked at the flash drive.
“What’s on this?””
Bear answered.
“Everything.””
“Everything?””
“Records. Names. Transactions.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Proof.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””
Nia looked at him.
“You’re right.””
She placed the drive in her pocket.
“I don’t.””
Then she looked at Bear.
“But I’m starting to.””
A noise came from outside.
Sirens.
Everyone froze.
Daniel smiled.
“Looks like your little reunion is over.””
Bear looked toward the windows.
Blue lights flashed across the glass.
Nia’s stomach dropped.
“Police?””
Her mother shook her head.
“No.””
She recognized something.
Fear returned to her face.
“Those aren’t police.””
Bear moved to the window.
His expression changed.
“They found us.””
Nia looked outside.
Several black vehicles surrounded the store.
Men stepped out.
Not wearing uniforms.
Not hiding.
Organized.
Daniel picked up the box.
But Nia grabbed it first.
Their eyes met.
For the first time, Daniel looked angry.
“Give me that.””
“No.””
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
“Then you really are your grandmother’s granddaughter.””
The front doors opened.
A voice called from outside.
“Daniel.””
Everyone turned.
A woman stepped into the store.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
And when Bear saw her…
He stopped breathing.
Nia noticed.
“Who is that?””
May you like
Bear whispered:
“The woman who started all of this.””
