Chapter 9: The Truth That Broke Them Apart

The silence after Daniel’s words was unbearable.

Nia stared at Bear.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Terrified.

“Why?””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Why did my mother choose you over me?””

Bear looked like he had been waiting years to hear that question.

But not because he wanted to answer.

Because he knew he deserved it.

“I didn’t ask her to.””

Nia shook her head.

“That’s not what I asked.””

Her mother stepped forward.

“Nia, please.””

“No.””

She looked at her mother.

“Not this time.””

Then back to Bear.

“Answer me.””

Bear lowered his eyes.

“Your mother didn’t choose me over you.””

Daniel smiled.

“Convenient.””

Bear ignored him.

“She chose you.””

Nia frowned.

“Then why did she leave?””

Bear took a breath.

“Because someone was coming for me.””

Daniel laughed.

“And you believed your enemies would stop because you disappeared?””

“No.””

Bear looked at him.

“I believed they would stop looking for her.””

Nia froze.

“For me?””

Bear nodded.

“Yes.””

The anger in her chest weakened.

Not gone.

But changing.

“You thought leaving would protect me.””

“Yes.””

“And you were wrong.””

His eyes closed.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

She wanted him to defend himself.

She wanted him to blame someone else.

But he didn’t.

He just accepted the pain.

Her mother wiped her eyes.

“I begged him to leave.””

Nia looked at her.

“You did?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her mother looked at Bear.

“Because I had already lost too much.””

The words were heavy.

“I lost my mother.””

Nia froze.

“My grandmother?””

Her mother nodded.

“Daniel took her from us.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Careful.””

Her mother ignored him.

“She discovered his crimes. She found proof.””

She touched the box.

“That proof.””

Nia looked down.

“The box?””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because Daniel was willing to destroy anyone who exposed him.””

Daniel smiled.

“You make me sound like a villain.””

Nia looked at him.

“You’re literally standing here threatening people in a toy store.””

For a second, nobody spoke.

Then Bear almost smiled.

A tiny moment.

The first one Nia had seen.

But it disappeared quickly.

Her mother continued.

“Your grandmother knew she couldn’t fight him alone.””

“So she gave the evidence to Bear?””

“Yes.””

Nia looked at him.

“Why?””

Her mother answered softly.

“Because Bear was the only person Daniel feared.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“That’s a lie.””

Bear looked at him.

“No.””

Daniel stared.

“You think you won?””

Bear shook his head.

“I think she finally knows the truth.””

Nia looked at the items in the box.

The necklace.

The doll.

The newspaper.

The photograph.

Then she noticed something underneath.

A small envelope hidden beneath the lining.

Her name was written on it.

Again.

But this time, there was something different.

The handwriting wasn’t her mother’s.

It was her grandmother’s.

Nia opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

Only one.

*Nia, if you are reading this, Bear kept his promise.*

She looked up.

“What promise?””

Bear’s face changed.

He knew.

Her voice became quieter.

“What promise did you make?””

Bear didn’t answer.

The room felt smaller.

Finally, he whispered:

“I promised your grandmother I would protect you.””

Nia stared.

“My grandmother knew you?””

“Yes.””

“Before my mother?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Bear looked at the old photograph.

The one of Nia as a child.

“The day your grandmother found the evidence…”

He stopped.

Nia waited.

“She didn’t just find proof against Daniel.””

A tear moved down his cheek.

“She found proof about me.””

Nia felt cold.

“What proof?””

Bear looked at her.

And the pain in his eyes was worse than anything he had said before.

“Proof that I wasn’t the man everyone thought I was.””

Daniel smiled.

“Now we’re getting somewhere.””

Nia turned toward Bear.

“Who were you?””

Bear looked at the box.

At the princess dolls.

At the photograph that started everything.

Then he finally said:

“Your grandmother discovered that my entire life was built on a lie.””

The store doors suddenly slammed open.

A group of people rushed inside.

Everyone froze.

Daniel stepped back.

Bear moved in front of Nia.

Her mother grabbed her hand.

And before anyone could explain, one of the strangers shouted:

“Find the box!””

Nia held it tightly.

Because now she understood.

May you like

The box wasn’t just a secret.

It was the reason everyone had been running for thirty years.
