Chapter 8: The Box Under the Christmas Tree

The lights returned.

Everyone turned toward the aisle.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

He wore no disguise.

No fear.

Just confidence.

Nia had never seen him before.

But everyone else reacted.

Her mother stepped backward.

Bear moved instantly in front of Nia.

Marcus looked away.

Almost ashamed.

Nia noticed.

“You know him.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

The older man smiled.

“Still protecting everyone, Bear?””

Bear’s expression hardened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man walked slowly toward them.

“I spent thirty years waiting for this moment.””

Nia tightened her grip on the box.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at her.

His eyes carried something cold.

“My name is Daniel.””

Her mother whispered:

“Daniel Cross.””

The name meant nothing to Nia.

But the fear in her mother’s voice meant everything.

Daniel smiled.

“Your mother told you stories about monsters?””

Nia said nothing.

“She forgot to tell you monsters sometimes wear suits.””

Bear stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Daniel looked amused.

“You still think you can protect her.””

“I know I can.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You failed once.””

The words hit Bear.

Nia noticed.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at the box.

“Give it to me.””

Nia held it closer.

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“You have your father’s stubbornness.””

The room went quiet.

Nia looked at Bear.

“Father?””

Bear looked away.

Daniel continued.

“She doesn’t even know.””

Nia’s anger exploded.

“Know what?””

Her mother stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop.””

He ignored her.

“She deserves to know.””

Bear’s voice became dangerous.

“Walk away.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You lost the right to make demands when you disappeared.””

Nia stared.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?””

Bear looked at her.

Pain filled his eyes.

“Because I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

He didn’t answer.

Her mother did.

“The wrong one.””

Nia felt like she was drowning.

Everyone had pieces.

No one gave her the whole picture.

She opened the wooden box.

Inside was a small collection of items.

A necklace.

A folded newspaper clipping.

A photograph.

And a tiny princess doll.

Nia stopped.

The doll was old.

Worn.

But familiar.

She touched it.

“I had this.””

Bear nodded.

“Yes.””

“You kept it?””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“You did.””

Her breath caught.

“What?””

He pointed.

“Look closer.””

She turned the doll over.

A name was carved into the bottom.

Not Nia.

Another name.

Her eyes widened.

Because she recognized the handwriting.

Her mother’s.

“What is this?””

Her mother covered her mouth.

Daniel looked angry for the first time.

“Don’t let her read the newspaper.””

Nia immediately grabbed it.

The article was old.

The headline was faded.

But one sentence stood out.

*LOCAL BUSINESSMAN ACCUSED OF COVERING UP DISAPPEARANCE OF FAMILY MEMBER.*

Below it was a photograph.

A young man.

A younger version of Daniel.

And beside him…

Her grandmother.

Nia’s hands went cold.

“My grandmother knew him?””

Her mother nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel interrupted.

“Because your grandmother was the reason everything started.””

Nia looked at him.

“What did she do?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Bear whispered:

“She found out what Daniel was hiding.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Bear laughed quietly.

“I know exactly what happened.””

Nia looked between them.

“Then tell me.””

Bear looked at the box.

At the photograph.

At the doll.

Then finally at her.

“Your grandmother discovered that Daniel was responsible for someone disappearing.””

“Who?””

Bear’s voice lowered.

“Someone in my family.””

Nia stared.

“And my mother helped you?””

Her mother nodded.

“She tried.””

“Tried?””

Her mother looked down.

“She didn’t know how dangerous it would become.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

Bear turned.

“No.””

Daniel stopped.

“You don’t get to control this anymore.””

For the first time, Daniel looked uncertain.

Bear continued.

“Nia deserves to know why her mother ran.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Then tell her.””

Everyone looked at Bear.

Daniel smiled.

“Tell her the real reason.””

Bear went silent.

Nia felt her stomach drop.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Ask him why your mother chose him over you.””

Nia turned slowly.

“Bear?””

His eyes filled.

May you like

And this time…

He couldn’t look away.
