Chapter 12: The Brother Waiting In The Dark

I stared at the picture until my eyes hurt.

Daniel.

Not a memory.

Not an old photograph.

Not a faded image from eighteen years ago.

Daniel.

Alive.

Older.

Gray in his beard.

Lines across his face.

But alive.

My brother was standing beneath a streetlight, looking directly into the camera.

Looking at me.

Like he knew I would see it.

Maya stepped closer.

“Is that him?””

I nodded.

Her eyes filled instantly.

“Daddy.””

That one word broke something inside me.

Because I had spent eighteen years mourning a brother.

But Maya had spent her entire life waiting for a father.

I looked at Marcus.

“You knew.””

His face changed.

“Red.””

“You knew he was alive.””

“I suspected.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“No more secrets.””

Marcus didn’t fight back.

Maybe because he knew I was right.

Maybe because he was tired.

“I saw him three years ago.””

The room went silent.

I released him.

“You saw Daniel?””

Marcus nodded.

“And you said nothing?””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because he made me promise.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone makes promises.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because everyone was trying to keep you alive.””

I wanted to argue.

But then I looked at the evidence around me.

The photographs.

The files.

The messages.

Too many people had sacrificed too much to maintain one lie.

There had to be a reason.

I looked at the phone again.

The message waited.

COME ALONE.

I knew what it meant.

Daniel wanted me.

Not Marcus.

Not Maya.

Me.

I grabbed my jacket.

“I’m going.””

Marcus immediately stood.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to stop me.””

“He wants you alone because he knows you’ll come.””

“Exactly.””

“That’s the point.””

I stepped closer.

“My brother has been hiding for eighteen years.””

I pointed at the screen.

“My niece has spent her whole life without him.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m not waiting another day.””

Marcus looked defeated.

“You sound just like him.””

I looked away.

“Good.””

Maya stepped forward.

“No.””

I turned.

“Maya.””

She shook her head.

“You can’t go alone.””

I softened.

“I have to.””

“My dad would say that’s stupid.””

The words hit me.

I looked at her.

She continued:

“He always said brave people don’t have to prove they’re brave.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because that sounded exactly like Daniel.

I crouched down.

“Your dad was smart.””

She looked at the phone.

“Bring him home.””

I nodded.

“I will.””

The location appeared after another message.

An abandoned train station.

The same place where Daniel had supposedly disappeared.

The place where everything started.

I arrived just before midnight.

Alone.

Exactly as he asked.

The station was empty.

Broken lights.

Old tracks.

Wind moving through the abandoned platforms.

Then I heard footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

I turned.

And there he was.

Daniel.

My brother.

Standing twenty feet away.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Eighteen years disappeared.

We were kids again.

Two brothers.

One impossible moment.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Red.””

My eyes burned.

I wanted to run to him.

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to ask a thousand questions.

Instead, I said the only thing I could.

“Why?””

His face broke.

“I tried to come home.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

He looked over his shoulder.

Fear crossed his face.

Real fear.

“They were watching.””

“Who?””

He stepped closer.

“Everyone.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You need to leave.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Red.””

“No.””

My voice echoed through the station.

“I lost eighteen years.””

I stepped closer.

“You lost eighteen years.””

Daniel looked away.

“I know.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them, they were full of regret.

“I will.””

A sound came from the darkness behind him.

A car door closing.

Daniel’s face changed.

Not fear for himself.

Fear for me.

“No.””

He whispered.

“They found you.””

I turned.

At the far end of the platform, a figure stepped into the light.

And Daniel said the words I never expected to hear.

“Red…”

May you like

His voice shook.

“That’s the person who killed our father.””
