Chapter 14: The Brother I Finally Found
Darkness swallowed the station.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then everything happened at once.
Footsteps.
Shouting.
The sound of metal hitting the ground.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“Move!””
We ran.
Not away from each other.
Together.
That was the difference.
For eighteen years, I had imagined finding Daniel.
In every version, I demanded answers.
I blamed him.
I asked why he abandoned me.
But now that he was beside me, all I could think was:
I almost lost him again.
We moved through the back entrance of the station.
Rain started falling.
Cold drops hit my face.
Behind us, voices followed.
Daniel knew exactly where he was going.
“You’ve been here before?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Three years ago.””
I stopped.
“You came back?””
He looked at me.
“I came to find you.””
The words hurt.
Because they answered the question I had carried for years.
He didn’t leave because he didn’t care.
He left because he cared too much.
We reached an old maintenance building.
Daniel opened the door.
Inside was a small room.
A table.
A radio.
A few bags.
A place to survive.
“You stayed here?””
“Sometimes.””
I looked around.
“This was your life?””
He nodded.
“It was enough.””
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“It wasn’t.””
Daniel looked at me.
For the first time, he looked like my little brother again.
Not a survivor.
Not someone hiding.
Just Daniel.
“I wanted to come home.””
I looked away.
“Then why didn’t you?””
He sat down.
“Because every time I got close, someone moved.””
“Who?””
“Elias.””
I shook my head.
“But he wasn’t alone.””
Daniel nodded.
“No.””
The answer made me uneasy.
“Who else?””
Daniel looked at the drive in my hand.
“That’s what’s on there.””
I stared at it.
“Dad’s evidence?””
“Everything.””
I found an old laptop on the table.
Daniel connected the drive.
Files appeared.
Names.
Dates.
Photos.
Documents.
My father’s entire hidden life.
But one folder stood out.
MY SONS.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked just as surprised.
“That wasn’t there before.””
I clicked it.
Inside were two videos.
One labeled:
RED.
The other:
DANIEL.
My hands went cold.
I opened mine.
My father appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
“Red.””
I couldn’t breathe.
His voice filled the room.
“If you are seeing this, then I failed to protect you.””
I looked down.
The video continued.
“I know you will feel betrayed.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
Too late.
“But I need you to understand something.””
My father looked directly into the camera.
“Your brother didn’t disappear because of weakness.””
The screen froze briefly.
“He disappeared because he chose you.””
I looked at Daniel.
His eyes were wet.
My father continued.
“There is a reason I trusted Daniel with the truth.””
A pause.
“Because he was the only person who would sacrifice himself without hesitation.””
The video ended.
Silence.
I looked at my brother.
“I spent eighteen years hating you.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“I thought you chose to leave.””
“I know.””
My voice broke.
“I thought I didn’t matter.””
Daniel looked at me.
“You were the only thing that mattered.””
That was the moment something inside me finally broke.
Not anger.
Not pain.
Something older.
A wound I had carried so long I forgot it was there.
I hugged my brother.
For the first time in eighteen years.
He held on tightly.
Neither of us spoke.
We didn’t need to.
Outside, thunder rolled.
Then the radio on the table crackled.
A voice came through.
Elias.
“You two always were sentimental.””
Daniel immediately stood.
His face changed.
“How did he find us?””
The radio continued.
“You have the files.””
Daniel grabbed it.
“Leave them alone.””
Elias laughed.
“You still think you’re in control.””
I looked at the laptop.
The files.
The evidence.
Then I noticed something.
A hidden folder.
Created five minutes ago.
Someone had accessed the system remotely.
Daniel saw it too.
His expression changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The files weren’t just evidence.””
I stared.
“What were they?””
Daniel whispered:
“A map.””
The radio went silent.
Then one final message appeared on the screen.
LOCATION FOUND.
May you like
And beneath it:
TARGET: RED.
