Chapter 9: The Brother’s Last Message

I stood frozen on the staircase.

The world had become a pattern I no longer understood.

Every time I thought I found the truth, another door opened.

Another secret stepped through.

The man standing below looked nothing like the person I expected.

He was older.

Tired.

His clothes were worn.

His face carried the kind of exhaustion that came from running for too long.

But I knew him.

Not because I had seen him recently.

Because Daniel had talked about him.

“Marcus.””

His eyes lifted.

He looked surprised.

“You remember.””

I walked down slowly.

“How could I forget?””

Marcus had been Daniel’s best friend.

The person who was there the night my brother disappeared.

The person who told police he didn’t know where Daniel went.

The person I blamed almost as much as myself.

“You knew.””

His face tightened.

“Knew what?””

“That Daniel was alive.””

Silence.

That was answer enough.

Maya looked between us.

“Who is he?””

I didn’t take my eyes off Marcus.

“Someone who should have told me the truth.””

Marcus looked down.

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked at the room around us.

“At first, because Daniel asked me not to.””

I stepped closer.

“And after?””

Marcus swallowed.

“After, because I was afraid.””

I laughed.

“Everybody’s afraid.””

“Yes.””

His voice became serious.

“But I was afraid of the same person Daniel was.””

My father.

The thought came immediately.

“Your father?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I turned away.

My entire life had become a circle.

Every road led back to Mason.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“Daniel found evidence.””

“Of what?””

“That your father wasn’t just hiding something.””

I waited.

“He was protecting someone.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

“You.””

The word landed harder than I expected.

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You don’t know me.””

“I knew Daniel.””

That stopped me.

Marcus continued.

“He spent eighteen years trying to keep you away from the truth.””

“Why?””

“Because the truth would make you do exactly what you’re doing now.””

“Which is?””

“Go looking.””

I looked at the photographs on the wall.

The messages.

The evidence.

The life Daniel had hidden.

“I’m not stopping.””

Marcus nodded sadly.

“I know.””

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a small envelope.

My chest tightened.

“Another letter?””

“No.””

He handed it to me.

“Something Daniel wanted you to have when you finally understood.””

I opened it.

Inside was a small key.

Nothing else.

I looked at Marcus.

“What is this?””

“A place.””

“Where?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“Where Daniel disappeared.””

My fingers closed around the key.

“Take me there.””

Marcus looked toward the window.

“No.””

I stared at him.

“No?””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He lowered his voice.

“The person who found you at the hospital knows you’re here.””

The room went silent.

Maya stepped closer.

“How?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because he wanted you to find this place.””

A chill moved through me.

“What?””

Marcus looked at the notebook.

“The clues. The pictures. The letters.””

He pointed at everything.

“Daniel didn’t leave them for you to find him.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then why?””

Marcus looked at me.

“He left them because he knew someone would follow you.””

I looked at the key.

The photograph.

The room.

Suddenly, everything felt different.

Not like a trail.

Like a trap.

The front door downstairs slammed shut.

Marcus turned instantly.

His face changed.

“Too late.””

I moved toward the stairs.

“What?””

He whispered:

“He found us.””

A shadow appeared at the bottom of the staircase.

Maya grabbed my hand.

And then the person stepped into view.

Not my father.

Not a stranger.

Someone I had seen before.

Someone who had stood beside my family for years.

Someone who knew every secret.

Marcus whispered:

“That’s the man Daniel was running from.””

I stared down at him.

And recognized him.

The man who had been at my father’s funeral.

The man who shook my hand.

The man who told me he was sorry for my loss.

My father’s closest friend.

He smiled.

And said:

“Red, your brother left you one final message.””

May you like

He looked at Maya.

“Unfortunately, you weren’t supposed to find it.””
