The Photograph That Burned / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Truth Waiting Inside

The stranger’s name was Adrian Cole.

And Eleanor hated that she recognized him.

Not because she had met him before.

Because Camille had mentioned him.

Once.

Only once.

Thirty years ago.

A name whispered during a late-night phone call.

A name Eleanor never understood.

Marcus kept his body between Adrian and his mother.

“You need to leave.””

Adrian didn’t move.

“I expected you to say that.””

“Then you know you’re not welcome.””

“I know.””

His eyes moved toward Eleanor.

“But I also know Camille wanted her daughter safe.””

Brielle flinched.

“Don’t say her name.””

Adrian looked at her sadly.

“You were eight years old when she left.””

Brielle’s face hardened.

“Don’t pretend you know what happened.””

“I know more than you think.””

Eleanor picked up the damaged photograph.

Her fingers touched the burned edges.

“Why did my daughter hide this note?””

Adrian looked at the paper.

“Because she knew someone would come looking for it.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Brielle.

“She was supposed to tell you when she turned twenty-five.””

Brielle shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, she told me to forget.””

Adrian’s expression softened.

“She told you that because she thought forgetting would keep you alive.””

The patio felt colder.

Eleanor stared at Brielle.

“You knew there was something hidden in that photograph?””

Brielle looked away.

“I suspected.””

“You threw it into the fire.””

“I wanted it destroyed.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You almost destroyed the only thing your mother left behind.””

Brielle’s voice cracked.

“You don’t understand!””

“Then explain!””

She finally broke.

“I spent my entire life believing my mother abandoned me!””

Tears fell down her face.

“Every birthday. Every holiday. Every time someone asked where she was. I had to pretend I was okay.””

Eleanor’s expression softened.

“But you knew something.””

“I knew she was scared.””

Brielle looked at the note.

“She came to me the night she disappeared.””

Marcus went silent.

Eleanor whispered:

“What did she say?””

Brielle closed her eyes.

“She said if anything happened, I should never let Grandma find the photograph.””

The fire behind them cracked loudly.

Eleanor looked down at the burned frame.

“Why?””

Brielle didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t need to.

The fear in her face said enough.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Because the photograph wasn’t the secret.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The photograph was the hiding place.””

Eleanor slowly turned the note over.

A tiny object fell from behind the paper.

A small metal key.

Marcus picked it up.

“What is this?””

Adrian looked at it.

“Camille’s insurance.””

“For what?””

Adrian looked toward the house.

“There is a box.””

Eleanor frowned.

“Where?””

Adrian hesitated.

Then he pointed toward the mansion.

“Somewhere inside this house.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Adrian said quietly.

“It’s hidden.””

Eleanor stared at the key.

A lifetime of memories surrounded her.

Every room.

Every hallway.

Every place where Camille had lived.

Then Brielle suddenly grabbed Eleanor’s arm.

“Grandma.””

Her voice was shaking.

“Don’t open that box.””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Why?””

Brielle’s lips trembled.

“Because my mother didn’t hide it from the world.””

A pause.

“She hid it from our family.””

Before anyone could respond, a loud crash came from inside the house.

Everyone turned.

The back door was slowly opening.

Marcus moved forward.

“Stay behind me.””

The door creaked.

A shadow appeared in the hallway.

Then a familiar voice spoke from inside.

A voice that none of them expected.

A voice that made Brielle cover her mouth.

“Eleanor…”

The figure stepped into the light.

And Eleanor dropped the note.

Because the person standing there was someone she had buried thirty years ago.

May you like

Someone who should have been impossible to see.

Someone who knew exactly what was written on the paper in her hand.
