Chapter 8: The Woman Who Kept the Last Secret

The woman placed the leather bag on the floor.

Nobody spoke.

Eleanor couldn’t look away.

The years had changed her, but not enough.

She remembered that face.

A woman standing outside the hospital.

A woman who had spoken quietly with Camille.

A woman who vanished the same night her daughter did.

“Your name…”

Eleanor’s voice trembled.

The woman looked at her.

“Clara.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who is Clara?””

Camille answered softly.

“My closest friend.””

Eleanor stared at her daughter.

“You never told me about her.””

“Because she was the reason I survived.””

Vincent’s expression darkened.

“You should have stayed away.””

Clara looked at him.

“So should you.””

The confidence between them was different from everyone else.

Not fear.

History.

Marcus noticed.

“You know each other.””

Clara nodded.

“Unfortunately.””

Vincent stepped forward.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Clara laughed quietly.

“No.””

She opened the leather bag.

“I understand exactly.””

Inside was a stack of documents.

Old.

Yellowed.

Protected carefully.

Marcus stared.

“What is that?””

“The truth.””

Vincent immediately moved.

Adrian blocked him.

For the first time, Vincent looked angry.

“Move.””

“No.””

The two men stared at each other.

Clara looked at Eleanor.

“Your husband found these.””

Eleanor’s face went pale.

“My husband?””

“Yes.””

She pulled out a document.

“Financial records.””

Another.

“Names.””

Another.

“Proof.””

Marcus looked at Vincent.

“You lied.””

Vincent shook his head.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.””

Clara smiled.

“We do now.””

Camille stepped closer.

“Why now?””

Clara looked at her.

“Because the photograph was destroyed.””

Eleanor looked confused.

“What?””

“The photograph was the last piece.””

Brielle looked at the burned frame.

“What was hidden inside?””

Clara looked at the note.

“That.””

Everyone stared.

The unopened paper suddenly felt heavier.

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“Read it.””

Camille shook her head.

“Not yet.””

Marcus turned.

“Why?””

Camille looked at Clara.

Because Clara looked terrified.

Not of Vincent.

Of the note.

“What does it say?””

Nobody answered.

Then Clara whispered:

“It tells you who your family can’t trust.””

The room became silent.

Vincent smiled faintly.

“Finally.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued:

“Now you understand.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You’re still acting like you’re in control.””

Vincent looked at him.

“I’ve always been in control.””

“No.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Not anymore.””

For the first time, Vincent looked uncertain.

Brielle noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Eleanor looked down at the note.

Her fingers touched the fold.

Thirty years.

Thirty years of pain.

Thirty years of unanswered questions.

All leading to this moment.

She opened it slightly.

Then stopped.

Because something fell out.

A small photograph.

Not old.

New.

Taken recently.

Everyone stared.

The picture showed Eleanor.

Standing outside her own house.

Sleeping.

Watching.

Waiting.

Someone had been following her.

For years.

Marcus grabbed it.

“When was this taken?””

Clara looked at the date.

Her expression changed.

“Last month.””

Eleanor felt cold.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because nobody knew I was there.””

Everyone turned toward Vincent.

But Vincent wasn’t looking at Eleanor.

He was looking at Brielle.

Brielle noticed.

“Why are you looking at me?””

Vincent didn’t answer.

Marcus stepped between them.

“Don’t even think about it.””

Vincent finally spoke.

“Ask her.””

Brielle froze.

“Ask me what?””

Camille’s face changed.

“Vincent.””

“No.””

He looked directly at Brielle.

“It’s time.””

Brielle backed away.

“No.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What is he talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor looked at the note.

The handwriting.

The date.

The hidden photograph.

And one terrifying possibility entered her mind.

“Brielle…”

Brielle looked at her grandmother.

“What?””

Eleanor’s voice shook.

“Your mother didn’t leave this note for me.””

A pause.

“She left it for you.””

Brielle went completely still.

The fire outside continued burning.

And slowly, she whispered:

“I never told anyone what happened that night.””

Marcus stared.

“What night?””

Brielle looked at her mother.

Then at the unopened note.

“The night my mother disappeared…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“I saw who took her.””
