Chapter 6: The Man Who Never Left

The door opened before anyone touched it.

A man stepped inside wearing a charcoal suit and a calm smile that made the room colder.

He looked exactly like someone who belonged at an elegant family gathering.

That was the most terrifying part.

He wasn’t threatening.

He wasn’t angry.

He looked comfortable.

Like he had been invited.

Eleanor immediately recognized him.

Not because she had met him many times.

Because she had seen his face in old photographs.

Vincent Hale.

The man Camille had spent thirty years running from.

Marcus moved in front of his family.

“You need to leave.””

Vincent smiled.

“Marcus.””

The way he said the name made Marcus’s expression change.

“You know me?””

“I’ve known you since you were a child.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“You stayed away.””

Vincent looked around.

“This house hasn’t changed.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Why are you here?””

Vincent looked at her.

“Because your daughter made a mistake.””

Camille immediately moved.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Vincent sighed.

“Still dramatic after all these years.””

Adrian stepped beside Camille.

“You should have stayed gone.””

Vincent’s smile disappeared slightly.

“Adrian.””

A pause.

“You always were loyal.””

Marcus looked between them.

“You two know each other.””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Vincent did.

“He helped her run.””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“And you never told us?””

Adrian remained silent.

Camille stepped in.

“He saved our lives.””

Vincent laughed softly.

“Saved?””

He looked at Camille.

“Is that what you call it?””

The room became tense.

Eleanor noticed something.

Vincent wasn’t looking at the note.

He wasn’t looking at the key.

He was looking at Brielle.

“Interesting.””

Brielle stepped back.

“What?””

“You look just like your mother.””

Brielle’s face hardened.

“Don’t talk to me.””

Vincent smiled.

“You were always the strongest one.””

Camille immediately grabbed Brielle’s arm.

“Don’t go near him.””

Vincent raised his hands.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

Marcus laughed.

“You broke into our house.””

“I walked through an unlocked door.””

“You came here threatening my family.””

“No.””

Vincent looked at Eleanor.

“I came here to stop a mistake.””

Eleanor held the note tighter.

“You mean stop me from reading this.””

Vincent’s eyes dropped to the paper.

For the first time, his calm expression cracked.

Only for a second.

But everyone saw it.

Marcus noticed.

“You’re afraid of what’s inside.””

Vincent recovered quickly.

“Your imagination is impressive.””

Camille looked at Eleanor.

“Don’t open it.””

Everyone turned.

Eleanor looked shocked.

“You too?””

Camille shook her head.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because this is exactly what he wants.””

Vincent smiled.

“Finally, someone understands.””

Marcus looked furious.

“You’re all speaking in circles.””

He pointed at the note.

“My family has been destroyed because everyone decided secrets were safer than the truth.””

Nobody argued.

Because everyone knew he was right.

Marcus looked at Camille.

“Thirty years ago, you disappeared.””

He looked at Vincent.

“This man came into our lives.””

Then he looked at Eleanor.

“And now we’re standing here with a hidden note and a locked box.””

His voice lowered.

“I want the truth.””

Vincent stepped closer.

“You think you do.””

Marcus didn’t move.

“I know I do.””

Vincent stared at him.

“You’re exactly like your father.””

The room went silent.

Eleanor’s face changed.

“My husband?””

Vincent nodded.

“He wanted justice.””

A pause.

“And justice got him killed.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What did you say?””

Camille immediately grabbed his arm.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

His eyes stayed on Vincent.

“What did you mean?””

Vincent smiled slightly.

“Your family was always told your father died in an accident.””

Eleanor whispered:

“He did.””

Vincent looked at her.

“That’s what you were told.””

The air disappeared from the room.

Marcus stared.

“What are you saying?””

Camille looked terrified.

“Vincent, stop.””

But he continued.

“Your father found the evidence.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.””

“He found the box.””

“No.””

“And before he could expose me…”

Vincent looked at the family.

“Someone made sure he never got the chance.””

Marcus turned toward Eleanor.

His voice broke.

“Mom?””

Eleanor looked completely lost.

“I don’t understand.””

Camille closed her eyes.

“Because I never told you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Told me what?””

Camille whispered:

“Your father didn’t die alone.””

The lights suddenly returned.

Everyone froze.

Because sitting on the table beside the birthday cake was something that had not been there before.

A second photograph.

A photograph of Marcus’s father.

Standing beside Vincent Hale.

May you like

And behind them, written in black ink, were four words.

*THEY WERE PARTNERS.*
