Chapter 12: The Brother Who Never Left

Nobody moved.

The man standing in the doorway looked like a ghost.

Not because he was frightening.

Because he shouldn’t exist.

Bear had buried Daniel decades ago.

He had mourned him.

He had accepted that loss.

And now he was standing there.

Alive.

Older.

Changed.

But alive.

Richard whispered:

“No…”

Daniel looked at him.

“Hello, Richard.””

The way he said the name made everyone uncomfortable.

Like there was history behind it.

A lot of history.

Bear stepped forward.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Bear’s fists tightened.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The answer was so simple it made it worse.

Bear’s voice became louder.

“Why?””

Daniel looked around the room.

At the photographs.

At the evidence.

At the secrets.

“Because I needed everyone to believe the wrong story.””

Bear stared.

“You destroyed my life.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Something closer to regret.

“I saved it.””

Bear laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“Don’t.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I know what it looks like.””

“You don’t know anything.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

And stopped.

Everything changed.

The anger in his face disappeared.

“Maya.””

She stared at him.

“Who are you?””

Daniel looked at Bear.

Then back at her.

“I’m your uncle.””

Maya didn’t move.

She had heard so many new names tonight.

So many connections.

Everyone seemed to belong to a story she had never been told.

“Do you know my mom?””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

The question broke something in him.

Daniel looked away.

Bear noticed.

“You know.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Bear stepped closer.

“Where is Elena?””

Daniel looked at him.

“She’s alive.””

Maya covered her mouth.

The words she had been waiting for.

The words she needed.

But Daniel wasn’t finished.

“She’s alive because I helped her disappear.””

Bear stared.

“You helped her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone think she was gone?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Because he helped make sure nobody looked.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“You knew.””

“I was protecting Maya.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

The accusation hung between them.

Bear looked at Richard.

“Is that true?””

Richard couldn’t answer.

And once again, silence became a confession.

Bear closed his eyes.

Too many lies.

Too many years.

Too many people deciding they knew what was best for him.

For Maya.

For Elena.

Daniel walked toward the wall.

He picked up the old photograph.

The one with Bear, Elena, and the baby.

“She wanted you to know.””

Bear looked at him.

“Why didn’t she come back?””

Daniel stared at the picture.

“Because she believed someone close to you would try to take Maya away.””

Bear’s expression changed.

“Who?””

Daniel looked directly at him.

“You.””

The word destroyed the room.

Maya looked confused.

Bear looked hurt.

“What?””

Daniel sighed.

“You don’t remember.””

Bear’s voice lowered.

“Remember what?””

Daniel walked closer.

“The night Elena left.””

The room became silent.

“You weren’t yourself.””

Bear stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Tell him.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

Bear turned.

“Tell me.””

Richard looked terrified.

“Bear…”

“Tell me.””

Richard swallowed.

“You found out someone was after Maya.””

Bear nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

“You went to confront them.””

“And?””

Richard looked down.

“And you almost got yourself killed.””

Bear frowned.

Daniel continued.

“You thought the only way to keep Maya safe was to take her and disappear.””

Bear stared.

“That doesn’t sound like me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“That’s because you don’t remember what happened afterward.””

The room went silent.

Then Maya spoke.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at her.

And for the first time, he looked truly sorry.

“Your father forgot.””

Bear froze.

Maya looked at him.

“Father?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Not Richard.””

The words echoed.

Bear stared.

Daniel continued.

“Your real father.””

The entire room stopped.

Bear couldn’t move.

The photograph slipped slightly in his hand.

Maya looked between them.

“Bear?””

Daniel looked at his brother.

And said the one sentence nobody was ready to hear.

“Bear, you didn’t lose Elena.””

May you like

A pause.

“You lost your memory of being Maya’s father.””
