Chapter 13: The Memory He Was Never Allowed to Keep

For a moment, Bear forgot how to breathe.

The room beneath the shopping center disappeared.

The photographs.

The old letters.

The people standing around him.

Everything faded behind one sentence.

*“You lost your memory of being Maya’s father.””*

No one spoke.

Not Daniel.

Not Richard.

Not Marcus.

Not even Maya.

Bear stared at Daniel like he was waiting for the punchline.

There wasn’t one.

“You’re lying.””

Daniel didn’t react.

“I wish I was.””

Bear shook his head.

“No.””

His voice grew louder.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at the photograph in Bear’s hand.

“You remember Elena.””

Bear’s expression tightened.

“You remember the day Maya was born.””

Bear froze.

A memory.

A hospital room.

A woman crying and laughing at the same time.

Tiny fingers wrapping around his hand.

A voice whispering:

“She has your eyes.””

He closed his eyes.

The memory vanished.

Like smoke.

Daniel continued.

“You remember loving her.””

Bear opened his eyes.

“Then why don’t I remember her?””

Daniel’s face softened.

“Because someone made sure you wouldn’t.””

Everyone looked at Richard.

Richard immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Bear turned.

“You knew.””

Richard looked broken.

“I knew something happened.””

“You knew enough.””

Richard’s voice cracked.

“I didn’t know who you were to her.””

The words stunned everyone.

Bear stared.

“What?””

Richard looked at Maya.

“I was told to protect her. That was all.””

“By who?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

Daniel answered.

“By me.””

Silence.

Maya stepped backward.

Nia caught her shoulder.

“You okay?””

Maya shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know anything anymore.””

Bear looked at her.

And something inside him broke.

Because for the first time, he understood what she had been feeling all night.

Lost.

Everyone else had pieces of the story.

She had none.

Bear slowly walked toward her.

“Maya.””

She looked up.

“Am I your dad?””

The question destroyed him.

Because there was no answer he could give that would erase the years she spent without him.

He lowered himself to her height.

“I don’t know everything yet.””

Her face fell.

“But I know something.””

“What?””

Bear looked at her.

“I know I would have protected you.””

Maya wiped her eyes.

“You weren’t there.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt more than anger.

Bear nodded.

“I know.””

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t make excuses.

“I should have been.””

Daniel watched silently.

Richard looked away.

Bear stood.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel nodded.

“Years ago, Elena discovered someone was using your family connections for illegal operations.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You mean the organization.””

Daniel nodded.

“She found evidence.””

Bear frowned.

“What evidence?””

“Evidence that someone close to us was involved.””

The room went quiet.

Bear looked around.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“Your father.””

The silence became heavier.

Bear’s face changed.

“My father died years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

“He left something behind.””

Daniel pointed toward the wall.

“He built a system of secrets. Accounts. Names. Information.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“And Elena found it.””

“Yes.””

Bear looked at the photographs.

“And that’s why she disappeared.””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew if the wrong people found Maya, they would use her to get to you.””

Bear looked at Maya.

“So she gave her to Richard.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“She trusted me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“At first.””

Richard looked hurt.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“It means you were supposed to bring Maya back when it was safe.””

Richard looked down.

“But I didn’t.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“You got attached.””

Richard whispered:

“She needed someone.””

Bear looked at him.

For the first time, he saw something complicated.

Richard had lied.

He had hidden.

But maybe he had also loved her.

And that made everything harder.

Daniel continued.

“The night everything happened, Bear confronted the organization.””

Bear touched his temple.

A sharp pain moved through his head.

Images.

A car.

Rain.

Elena screaming.

Someone hitting him.

A crash.

Then darkness.

He grabbed the table.

Nia moved forward.

“Bear?””

He waved her off.

“I remember something.””

Everyone watched.

Bear looked at Daniel.

“You were there.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“You pulled me out.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because when you woke up, you didn’t remember Maya.””

Bear froze.

“And you decided to let me live a lie.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I decided to let you live.””

The answer was painful.

But honest.

Before Bear could respond, a sound came from above.

A phone ringing.

Everyone turned.

It wasn’t Richard’s.

It wasn’t Marcus’s.

It was Maya’s.

Nia looked confused.

“Maya doesn’t have a phone.””

Maya reached into her hoodie pocket.

A small device.

Old.

Hidden.

Bear stared.

“Where did you get that?””

Maya looked frightened.

“I found it with the photograph.””

Bear took it.

The screen lit up.

One message.

One number.

No name.

He opened it.

The message was short.

*“Bear. If you finally remember, bring Maya to the place where it started.””*

Below it was an address.

Daniel read it.

His face changed.

“No.””

Bear looked at him.

“What?””

May you like

Daniel whispered:

“That’s where Elena disappeared.””
