Chapter 6: The Letter That Changed Everything

Bear didn’t open the envelope.

Not immediately.

He just stood there holding it.

The strongest man in the parking lot looked like he was afraid of a piece of paper.

Maya noticed.

“Are you scared?””

The question was innocent.

But it hit him harder than anything else.

Bear looked at her.

“Yes.””

Nobody expected that answer.

Not the bikers.

Not Richard.

Not even Vincent.

Bear looked down at the envelope.

“I’m scared of what it says.””

Maya stepped closer.

Nia gently touched her shoulder.

“It’s okay.””

But Maya shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Bear.

“I spent my whole life not knowing things.””

Her voice trembled.

“I’m tired of not knowing.””

Bear stared at her.

Then slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Folded twice.

The parking lot became completely silent.

He unfolded it.

His eyes moved across the page.

At first, nothing changed.

Then his hand stopped.

A tiny movement.

A breath caught in his chest.

Nia saw it.

“What does it say?””

Bear didn’t answer.

He read again.

Slower.

Like he was trying to convince himself the words were real.

Richard looked nervous.

“What does it say?””

Bear lifted his eyes.

Straight toward Richard.

“You knew.””

Richard looked away.

Bear’s voice became colder.

“You knew she was alive.””

Maya gasped.

The world seemed to stop.

Nia looked at Bear.

“What?””

Bear held the letter tighter.

“She was alive.””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“My mother?””

Bear looked at her.

He wanted to answer.

He wanted to say yes.

But the letter didn’t give him that.

Not completely.

Instead, it gave him something worse.

A warning.

He read the final lines out loud.

“She said… ‘If Maya ever reaches Bear, it means Richard failed to keep her hidden.’”

Richard closed his eyes.

Maya turned toward him.

“Hidden?””

Richard’s face broke.

For the first time, he looked less like an angry man.

And more like someone who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“Maya…”

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You lied to me.””

Richard stepped forward.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From my mother?””

The question stopped him.

He had no answer.

Bear folded the letter.

“Tell me the truth.””

Richard looked at him.

“You don’t want the truth.””

Bear stepped forward.

“I spent years living with a lie.””

His eyes moved to Maya.

“She spent eight years living inside one.””

The words destroyed Richard’s last defense.

Vincent watched silently.

Almost enjoying it.

Bear noticed.

“You knew.””

Vincent smiled.

“I knew enough.””

Bear turned toward him.

“Then talk.””

Vincent looked at the photograph.

“You want answers?””

“Yes.””

Vincent nodded slowly.

“Then you need to understand something.””

He looked at Maya.

“Your mother didn’t disappear.””

Maya held her breath.

“She ran.””

Bear’s eyes sharpened.

“From who?””

Vincent looked directly at Richard.

Richard’s face went pale.

“From the person she trusted most.””

The parking lot fell silent again.

Bear looked at Richard.

Richard looked at Maya.

And Maya realized the truth was closer than she ever wanted.

The person who had raised her.

The person who had chased her.

The person who had hidden her past.

Was standing right in front of her.

Richard whispered:

“She told you never to come looking.””

Bear stepped forward.

“Why?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Then his phone buzzed.

Again.

But this time, he looked at the screen and immediately dropped it.

Because the message was from an unknown number.

And it contained a picture.

A recent picture.

A woman standing somewhere in the city.

Alive.

Bear saw the image on the ground.

And his entire world stopped.

May you like

Because the woman in the photograph from twenty years ago…

was looking directly into the camera.
