Chapter 10: The Last Conversation

The message stayed on my phone screen.

*Ask your father why your mother was never allowed to finish her last conversation with Elijah.*

I read it again.

And again.

Every time, the same question formed in my mind.

What conversation?

What had happened on the day my mother’s life changed forever?

I looked at Robert.

For years, I had seen him as the safest person in the world.

The man who checked under my bed when I was afraid of monsters.

The man who waited outside my classroom after my first day of school.

The man who told me that family meant never giving up on each other.

Now I was looking at someone who knew the truth about my birth.

About Elijah.

About my mother.

And maybe about the moment everything fell apart.

“Dad.””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, Robert raised his eyes.

There were tears there.

Not excuses.

Not anger.

Just regret.

“What happened?””

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa whispered:

“Robert.””

He looked at her.

And the expression between them told me everything.

They had carried this together.

A secret shared by two people who convinced themselves they were doing the right thing.

I stepped back.

“I need the truth.””

Robert nodded slowly.

“You deserve it.””

The hallway became quiet.

Even Elijah stood still.

Waiting.

Robert took a deep breath.

“The day you were born…”

He stopped.

His voice cracked.

“Your mother wanted Elijah there.””

I looked at Elijah.

His eyes dropped.

“I didn’t know that,” he whispered.

Robert nodded.

“She called him.””

Elijah looked up.

“She called me?””

“Yes.””

The pain on his face was immediate.

Like hearing those words hurt more than any accusation.

“When?”” he asked.

“The night before you were born.””

Elijah covered his mouth.

My chest tightened.

My mother had reached out.

She had tried.

And someone had interrupted that.

Robert continued.

“She told me she wanted both of us there.””

I frowned.

“Both?””

He nodded.

“She wanted you to have everyone who loved you.””

The words hurt.

Because that was exactly what I never had.

A complete story.

A complete family.

“What happened?””

Robert looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

“I told her not to call him.””

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa’s voice was quiet.

“I thought Elijah was going to take you away.””

I stared at her.

“He was my father.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice rose.

“Everyone was afraid. Everyone was protecting someone. Everyone had a reason.””

I pointed at the three people standing in front of me.

“But nobody protected me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could argue.

Robert looked at Elijah.

“After Maya was born, Elijah came to the hospital.””

Elijah’s eyes closed.

“I remember.””

My heart tightened.

“You remember?””

He nodded.

“I stood outside the room.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you come in?””

His face broke.

“Because I was told your mother didn’t want me there.””

Silence.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

My voice became a whisper.

“You lied.””

She cried.

“I thought I was helping.””

Elijah looked at her.

“You told me she changed her mind.””

Vanessa couldn’t answer.

“You told me she chose Robert.””

The hallway felt frozen.

“You made me believe my daughter had a family and didn’t need me.””

My eyes filled.

I looked at Robert.

“And you let him believe that?””

Robert looked destroyed.

“I found out later.””

“When?””

“Months later.””

I laughed softly.

“Months?””

He nodded.

“I confronted Vanessa.””

“And?””

He looked at the floor.

“I was angry.””

“That’s all?””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“Afraid of what?””

Robert looked at me.

“Losing you.””

The answer hurt because it was honest.

But honesty did not erase damage.

“You could have told me.””

“Yes.””

“You could have found Elijah.””

“Yes.””

“You could have fixed it.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

Elijah looked away.

The pain on his face was unbearable.

Because he had lost twenty-two years.

And so had I.

Then Marcus Hill spoke from the doorway.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus held a small notebook.

Old.

Worn.

Something he had been carrying the entire time.

“What is that?””

He walked closer.

“Your mother’s journal.””

My breath caught.

“You had her journal?””

Marcus nodded.

“She gave it to me before she died.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes.””

My fingers tightened.

“What does it say?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he opened it.

“There’s one entry she wrote the week before she passed.””

My heart raced.

“Read it.””

Marcus looked down.

His voice became quiet.

“She wrote…”

He paused.

Then continued.

I know who changed the letters.

My blood ran cold.

I know who kept Elijah away.

I looked at Vanessa.

But Marcus wasn’t looking at her.

He was looking at Robert.

May you like

And the next words made my entire world stop.

The person I trusted most helped them do it.
