Chapter 9: The Betrayal My Mother Predicted

I didn’t open the envelope immediately.

I couldn’t.

Because my mother’s words had become warnings.

Every piece of her handwriting carried a hidden wound.

The first letter.

The photograph.

The second envelope.

She had been trying to tell me something.

Trying to reach me from a place where she could no longer speak.

I looked at Elijah.

“You had this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who did?””

His eyes moved toward Robert.

My father looked away.

Again.

Always away.

I felt something inside me break.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“I was given that envelope.””

“By who?””

Silence.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

His voice was barely audible.

“Vanessa.””

I turned.

Vanessa looked like she had expected this moment.

“I was going to give it to you.””

I stared at her.

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“After graduation?””

Her silence confirmed it.

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“After graduation?””

I held up the envelope.

“So you were going to wait until I finished school before telling me my entire identity was hidden?””

“Maya—”

“No.””

My voice echoed.

“No more excuses.””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Elijah.

“Of what would happen when you found out.””

Elijah’s expression hardened.

“You mean when she found out what you did.””

Vanessa flinched.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

My mother’s handwriting.

This time, the first sentence made my heart ache.

Maya, my baby girl.

I covered my mouth.

No matter how old I got, seeing those words from her still made me feel twelve years old.

Alone.

Missing her.

I kept reading.

If you are holding this letter, then the people around you failed to keep you from the truth.

My eyes moved upward.

Failed.

Not protected.

Not helped.

Failed.

I need you to know something about Elijah.

I looked at him.

He was watching me carefully.

He did not abandon us.

The room went quiet.

I looked at my father.

He looked broken.

The story you may hear is that he left. That he disappeared. That he chose not to be your father.

My hands shook.

That story is a lie.

A tear fell onto the paper.

I continued.

Elijah came to the hospital the day you were born.

My breath stopped.

The day I was born.

He held you before anyone else outside of me.

I looked at Elijah.

His face was full of tears.

Real tears.

Twenty-two years of them.

He promised me he would never leave.

The room was silent.

Someone made sure he couldn’t keep that promise.

I looked down.

The next line was darker.

I discovered the truth about Vanessa before I died.

My heart stopped.

Vanessa whispered:

“Maya.””

I ignored her.

I kept reading.

She believed she was protecting me, but she made a decision that changed all of our lives.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What decision?””

She started crying.

“I was young.””

The words came suddenly.

Everyone looked at her.

“I was scared.””

Elijah stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn’t know it would become this.””

My father looked horrified.

“What are you saying?””

She covered her face.

“I changed the message.””

The room went completely silent.

I stared.

“What message?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“The one Elijah sent your mother.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“What?””

Elijah’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa cried.

“He wrote her a letter.””

My hands tightened around my mother’s letter.

“A letter saying what?””

Vanessa looked at Elijah.

Then at me.

“He said he was coming back.””

Nobody moved.

“He said he wanted to be there for Maya.””

Elijah’s face went pale.

“But I never got her response.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Because she never received yours.””

I felt dizzy.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa looked like she could barely speak.

“I switched the letters.””

The words landed like an explosion.

My father stared at her.

“You lied to both of them.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I thought I was fixing something.””

Elijah’s voice was broken.

“You destroyed a family.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I know.””

I looked back at my mother’s letter.

The final paragraph was still unread.

My fingers moved down the page.

One sentence waited.

The sentence my mother had saved for the end.

Maya, if you want to know who truly betrayed me, look at the person who benefited most from my silence.

My breathing stopped.

Slowly, I lifted my eyes.

Everyone was watching me.

Everyone except Robert.

Because he was staring at Vanessa.

And Vanessa was staring at him.

Like they both knew there was one more secret left.

One secret bigger than all the others.

And then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From the same unknown number.

This time, there was no photo.

May you like

Only words.

*Maya, ask your father why your mother was never allowed to finish her last conversation with Elijah.*
