Chapter 5: The Stranger Who Knew My Father

The security officer didn’t move.

Neither did we.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

The only sound was the distant applause coming from the auditorium.

A celebration happening just a few feet away.

A celebration I no longer felt part of.

I looked at the man standing in the doorway.

He was older, probably in his sixties, with gray hair and a tired expression. His university security uniform looked ordinary.

But the way he stared at the ID card wasn’t ordinary.

He knew it.

He knew that name.

“Elijah Brooks,” I said quietly.

The man swallowed.

“Yes.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The security officer looked at him.

And something changed.

Recognition.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You’re Robert Carter.””

My father’s face lost color.

Vanessa whispered:

“Oh my God.””

I looked between them.

“You know each other?””

The man slowly walked into the hallway.

“My name is Marcus Hill.””

He looked at me.

“I worked security at this university years ago.””

“Years ago?””

He nodded.

“Your mother came here.””

My heart raced.

“My mother?””

Marcus looked at the letter in my hand.

Then at the torn photograph pieces still lying nearby.

“She wanted someone to help her.””

My father’s voice became sharp.

“Marcus.””

The man ignored him.

“She was scared.””

I stepped closer.

“What was she scared of?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

That was all it took.

The answer was in his eyes.

Vanessa backed away.

“Maya, don’t listen to him.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know him.””

I looked at Marcus.

“He knows my mother.””

Vanessa said nothing.

I turned back.

“What happened?””

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Your mother came here with Elijah Brooks.””

The name hit me again.

“He was here?””

Marcus nodded.

“He wanted to meet you.””

My heart stopped.

The hallway became silent.

“He knew about me?””

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.””

My eyes filled.

“But my mother wrote he never knew I was born.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“That’s not what happened.””

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

My chest tightened.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus slowly reached into his pocket.

He pulled out an old wallet.

From inside, he removed a small folded photograph.

Another photograph.

He handed it to me.

I stared.

It showed my mother.

Young.

Smiling.

Standing beside Elijah Brooks.

And between them—

A baby.

Me.

My hands began shaking.

“No.””

The word barely escaped.

“My mother had this?””

Marcus nodded.

“She gave it to me the night everything changed.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice cracked.

“You have no right.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“I have every right.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“What did you do?””

She didn’t answer.

That silence was becoming unbearable.

I looked at my father.

“You knew he wanted to meet me?””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Maya…”

“You knew?””

He looked broken.

“I knew he was trying.””

“Trying?””

My voice rose.

“To meet his daughter?””

He had no response.

I stepped away from him.

The man who raised me.

The man I trusted.

Suddenly I didn’t know where his choices ended and someone else’s began.

Marcus looked at me.

“Your mother asked me to hold onto evidence.””

“Evidence?””

He nodded.

“She believed someone was trying to erase Elijah from your life.””

My stomach twisted.

“Who?””

Marcus looked directly at Vanessa.

No hesitation.

No confusion.

Just certainty.

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

Marcus continued.

“Your stepmother knew about Elijah.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

She immediately turned toward him.

“Robert, it wasn’t like that.””

I felt the room spin.

“Then what was it like?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I was trying to save you.””

I stared at her.

“From my father?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“From the truth.””

The answer made no sense.

But somehow it scared me more.

Marcus looked at the envelope in my hand.

“Did your mother leave anything else?””

I looked down.

The letter.

The photograph.

The ID card.

Three pieces of a life I had never known existed.

“There’s more.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Then you need to read it.””

Vanessa moved suddenly.

Not toward me.

Toward the envelope.

My father grabbed her arm.

“Vanessa.””

She froze.

And in that moment, I saw something I had never seen before.

My father was afraid of her.

Not for her.

Of her.

Marcus noticed too.

His voice became quiet.

“Maya, there’s something you need to know before you finish that letter.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at the torn photograph on the floor.

“Your mother didn’t disappear from Elijah’s life.””

A chill ran through me.

“Then what happened?””

May you like

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“She was forced out.””
