Chapter 4: The Secret Vanessa Was Trying to Bury

Nobody moved after the voicemail ended.

Not even Vanessa.

Her own voice had just filled the room, accusing someone in my family of killing my father.

But she was standing there like she had been caught in a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from.

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

I replayed the message.

Again.

The same trembling voice.

The same words.

“Your father’s killer is still inside your family.””

The dining room that had been filled with celebration only an hour earlier now felt like a courtroom.

Everyone was watching everyone else.

Searching.

Suspecting.

Waiting for someone to break.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes moved to Lily.

Then back to me.

“I never wanted you to hear that.””

“That’s not an explanation.””

She wiped a tear from her cheek.

For the first time that night, she didn’t look like the powerful woman who controlled every room she entered.

She looked exhausted.

Broken.

But I couldn’t forget what she had done.

I couldn’t forget my daughter standing there with a handprint on her face.

“You knew,” I said.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

A quiet gasp moved through the room.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Thomas looked away.

I felt my chest tighten.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long have you known?””

“Years.””

The word landed like a weight.

I stepped back.

Years.

Not days.

Not weeks.

Years.

All this time, she had sat across from me at breakfast.

She had watched me talk about my father.

She had listened to me wonder what really happened.

And she had carried the truth.

“You let me believe he died by accident.””

Vanessa whispered, “I was trying to protect you.””

I stared at her.

“Protect me?””

“Yes.””

“By lying to me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“By keeping you alive.””

The room became silent.

Even I didn’t expect that answer.

I shook my head.

“You’re going to have to do better than that.””

Vanessa looked toward the security camera.

Then at the spilled wine.

Then at Lily.

Her face changed.

“I made a mistake.””

I laughed quietly.

“A mistake?””

Her voice became desperate.

“I know how it looks.””

“No. You don’t.””

I pointed toward the floor.

“You put something in my drink.””

She looked down.

“I didn’t know what she was planning.””

Everyone turned.

“She?””

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Marcus did.

“Angela.””

The name meant nothing to me at first.

Then it hit.

Angela Brooks.

My father’s former business partner’s wife.

The woman in the photograph.

The woman who hugged me at my father’s funeral and told me she would always be there if I needed anything.

The woman who brought food to our house during the weeks after his death.

The woman who had looked me in the eyes and said:

“Your father was a good man.””

My hands tightened.

“Angela did this?””

Thomas shook his head.

“We don’t know everything yet.””

I looked at him.

“But you know something.””

Thomas nodded.

“I know your father discovered someone was moving money from his company.””

“And Angela was involved?””

“She had access.””

My eyes moved to Marcus.

“And you?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I was trying to help Dad find out who it was.””

“You were investigating?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because Dad told me not to.””

That stopped me.

“My father?””

Marcus nodded.

“He said if anything happened to him, I had to keep you away from it.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at me.

“Because you were the only thing he wanted to protect.””

The anger inside me weakened for one second.

Just one.

Because I remembered my father.

I remembered how he used to sit at the edge of my bed when I was sick.

How he always told me family came before money.

How he promised he would never leave me.

And then he did.

Or at least, that was what I believed.

I looked at the envelope.

“What else is in here?””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Open it.””

I unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My father’s.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then something happened before I could explain everything.

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

I hadn’t seen his words in twenty years.

I continued.

You need to understand something. The people closest to you may not be the people who love you.

My throat tightened.

The room stayed quiet.

The letter continued.

I discovered someone inside my company was stealing from me. When I confronted them, they threatened my family.

I looked at Lily.

My daughter was watching my face carefully.

I kept reading.

I was going to expose them. I had evidence. But I realized the danger was bigger than I thought.

There was a pause in the letter.

Then one sentence.

If they cannot control you, they will try to control what you love.

I stopped reading.

Because I knew exactly what that meant.

Lily.

Vanessa looked at her.

And for a moment, I hated that I saw regret in her eyes.

Because regret didn’t undo damage.

Regret didn’t erase fear.

Regret didn’t remove the handprint on my daughter’s cheek.

I folded the letter.

“Why did you marry me?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

Vanessa looked confused.

“What?””

“You knew about my father.””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew there was danger.””

Her face changed.

“Daniel…”

“Did you marry me because of him?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

She looked down.

The answer took too long.

That hurt.

Finally, she whispered.

“Because I loved you.””

Nobody believed her.

Not even herself.

I walked away.

I needed space.

I needed air.

But before I reached the hallway, my daughter grabbed my hand.

“Dad.””

I stopped.

She looked up at me.

“Don’t leave me.””

The words broke something inside me.

I knelt down.

“I’m not leaving.””

“Promise?””

I held her face gently.

“Promise.””

She nodded.

Then she whispered something I didn’t expect.

“Dad… I saw Vanessa with Angela yesterday.””

I froze.

“What?””

Lily looked nervous.

“She told me not to tell.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Lily, that’s not what happened.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa stopped.

I looked at my daughter.

“What did you see?””

Lily swallowed.

“They were arguing.””

“Where?””

“In the garage.””

“When?””

“Yesterday morning.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You never mentioned Angela was here.””

“She wasn’t.””

Lily shook her head.

“Yes, she was.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Lily…”

My daughter continued.

“She said, ‘If Daniel finds out what happened, we’re all finished.’”

The room went cold.

Thomas slowly looked at Marcus.

Marcus looked toward the front door.

And that’s when we heard it.

A sound outside.

A car engine.

Everyone turned.

The headlights of a vehicle flashed through the windows.

Then came a knock.

Three slow knocks.

Nobody moved.

Another knock.

Vanessa whispered:

“She found us.””

I looked at the door.

“Who?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The lock turned.

The door opened.

And standing there was Angela Brooks.

Older.

Calm.

Holding a small black bag.

She looked around the room.

At the broken glass.

At Vanessa.

At Marcus.

Then her eyes landed on me.

She smiled sadly.

“Daniel.””

My body went still.

Because after twenty years, the woman who comforted me at my father’s funeral had finally come back.

And the first words she said were:

“I know what your father wrote in that letter.””

She paused.

May you like

Then looked directly at Vanessa.

“And I know she’s been lying to you about why she married you.””
