Chapter 8: The Mother I Thought I Lost

For twenty years, I had imagined what I would say if I ever heard my mother’s voice again.

I imagined anger.

I imagined questions.

I imagined tears.

But I never imagined standing in my dining room, surrounded by strangers and family members who had lied to me, while hearing the woman I buried as a child tell me my father died because of her.

My hand trembled around the phone.

“Mom?””

The word felt strange.

Like I was saying it for the first time.

The room was completely silent.

Everyone was watching me.

Marcus looked like he already knew.

Thomas looked afraid.

And Vanessa…

Vanessa looked like she had just seen a ghost.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

The woman on the other end took a shaky breath.

“Daniel, you need to listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, you don’t get to do that.””

“Do what?””

“Disappear for twenty years and then tell me to listen.””

Silence.

Then a quiet sob.

“I know.””

The sound almost broke me.

Because it was the same voice I remembered.

The same voice that sang to me when I was sick.

The same voice that told me monsters weren’t real when I was afraid of the dark.

But memories weren’t enough.

Not anymore.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I had no choice.””

“Everyone says that.””

My eyes moved around the room.

“Everyone who lies to me says they had no choice.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother was quiet for several seconds.

Then she said:

“I know what Vanessa did.””

My expression changed.

“You know about Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because she’s the reason I called you tonight.””

I looked toward the front door.

Vanessa was gone.

My daughter was gone.

Everything was happening too fast.

“Where is Lily?””

My mother’s breathing changed.

“She has her.””

I froze.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

“I know Vanessa has her.””

My voice became sharper.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer almost destroyed me.

“You don’t know?””

“I’ve been watching from a distance.””

The room went still.

“You’ve been watching?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Years.””

I closed my eyes.

The pain was too much.

My own mother had been alive.

Watching.

Knowing.

And doing nothing.

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Because I was afraid if I came back, they would hurt you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“They hurt me anyway.””

My voice broke.

“They took my daughter.””

The other end went silent.

Then my mother whispered:

“No.””

There was real fear in her voice.

Not fake.

Not controlled.

Real.

“Daniel, you need to get Lily away from Vanessa.””

“I’m trying.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“She isn’t just hiding evidence.””

I stared at the phone.

“She’s protecting herself.””

“From what?””

My mother hesitated.

“From what your father discovered.””

I looked at Thomas.

Then Marcus.

“What did my father discover?””

My mother took a breath.

“The truth about my family.””

I frowned.

“Your family?””

“Yes.””

The old photograph flashed through my mind.

My grandfather.

The unknown woman.

The secrets passed down through generations.

“What does that have to do with Dad?””

“Everything.””

I walked away from the others, trying to process.

“What happened the night Dad died?””

My mother became quiet.

Then she said:

“I killed him.””

The room stopped.

I couldn’t move.

My fingers loosened around the phone.

“What?””

Everyone saw my reaction.

Marcus stepped closer.

I raised my hand.

No.

I needed to hear this.

“I didn’t mean to.””

My mother’s voice was breaking.

“I never wanted him to die.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

“I found out your father was planning to expose someone.””

“Who?””

“Me.””

The answer hit harder than anything else.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked devastated.

“What?””

My mother continued.

“Your father found out I had been hiding something.””

“What?””

“My family’s involvement in his company.””

I felt sick.

The same story.

The same pattern.

Everyone connected.

Everyone hiding something.

“What did you do?””

“I begged him to stop.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew what would happen if he exposed the truth.””

“And?””

“He refused.””

The silence stretched.

“Then what?””

My mother started crying.

“He recorded everything.””

My eyes widened.

“The recording.””

“Yes.””

The basement.

The box.

My father’s final message.

“Where is it?””

“I don’t know.””

“You said you knew.””

“I know what was on it.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

She whispered:

“He said the person who destroyed our family was not who we thought.””

I looked at the room.

At Marcus.

At Vanessa’s empty chair.

“Who?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Instead, she asked:

“Where is Vanessa?””

I froze.

“She took Lily.””

“No.””

The fear returned.

“She wouldn’t.””

“She already did.””

My mother was silent.

Then:

“Daniel, get away from the house.””

“What?””

“Now.””

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa has Lily, then she knows.””

“Knows what?””

My mother whispered:

“Where the recording is.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Then I heard a sound.

A notification.

A video message.

From Vanessa.

My entire body tightened.

I opened it.

The screen showed Lily sitting in a dark room.

Her face was wet with tears.

But she was alive.

“Dad.””

I almost dropped the phone.

“Lily.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I’m okay.””

Behind her, Vanessa appeared.

Calm.

Controlled.

Like the woman from our first dinner together.

“Daniel.””

I said nothing.

She continued.

“I know you’re angry.””

I laughed quietly.

“Angry?””

Her expression changed slightly.

“I know how this looks.””

“You kidnapped my daughter.””

“I protected her.””

“Don’t.””

My voice became cold.

“Do not use that word.””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then back at the camera.

“Your mother told you everything, didn’t she?””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“Because she always runs to you when she’s afraid.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let me believe she was dead?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because your father wanted it that way.””

“What?””

“He knew the truth would destroy you.””

I stared at the screen.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Dad.””

Her voice was small.

“Don’t believe her.””

Vanessa turned.

“Lily.””

“No.””

My daughter looked at the camera.

“She’s lying.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

For the first time, she looked angry.

“Lily, stop.””

My heart raced.

“What did you find?””

Lily looked scared.

But she continued.

“I found the recording.””

Vanessa went completely still.

“What?””

“The one in the basement.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“How?””

Lily looked down.

“Grandpa hid it.””

Vanessa stepped closer to her.

“Where?””

Lily shook her head.

“I’m not telling you.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Not rage.

Panic.

“Lily.””

“No.””

My daughter wiped her tears.

“Dad told me family protects family.””

My eyes filled.

Then Lily whispered:

“And Grandpa told me never trust the person who says they’re protecting you.””

Vanessa stared at her.

Then slowly looked at the camera.

At me.

“You don’t understand what your father did.””

“Let my daughter go.””

“I can’t.””

The words froze me.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s face became full of fear.

“Because if I let her go, they’ll kill her.””

Silence.

“What?””

Vanessa looked behind her.

Like someone else was there.

Someone she feared.

Then the camera moved slightly.

A shadow appeared in the doorway behind her.

A person standing outside the room.

Vanessa turned.

Her face went pale.

“No.””

The video shook.

Lily screamed.

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

Not from Vanessa.

From an unknown number.

May you like

*Daniel, you finally found your mother.*

*Now find out who your father was really protecting you from.*
