Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew My Father’s Last Words
Angela Brooks stood in my doorway like she belonged there.
That was the part that terrified me most.
Not the accusation.
Not the secrets.
Not even the fact that she had walked into my home on the night my family’s lies finally started collapsing.
It was the way she looked around.
Like she was returning to a place she had visited many times before.
Like she had never been a stranger.
For twenty years, Angela had been one of the people I trusted.
She brought flowers to my father’s funeral.
She sat beside my mother during those first painful weeks.
She told me I had my father’s strength when I was barely strong enough to get out of bed.
And now she was standing in front of me, telling me she knew what my father wrote before he died.
I stepped between her and Lily.
“What are you doing here?””
Angela looked at my daughter.
Then at me.
“I came because I knew you would eventually find the truth.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Behind her, the open doorway let in a cold breeze that moved the curtains slightly.
Vanessa stared at her.
“You weren’t supposed to come.””
Angela’s eyes shifted toward her.
“No.””
A small smile appeared.
“You weren’t supposed to fail.””
The room changed instantly.
Every person heard it.
This wasn’t a surprise meeting.
They knew each other.
They had a history.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You two planned this?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Angela laughed softly.
“Still lying?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Don’t do this.””
“Do what?””
Angela stepped inside.
“Tell him the truth?””
I felt my hands tighten.
“Someone explain what is happening.””
Nobody answered.
So I did the only thing I could.
I closed the front door.
Nobody was leaving.
Not until I had answers.
“Angela,” I said.
She looked at me.
“You’re going to tell me everything.””
She studied my face for a moment.
Then she nodded.
“I suppose I owe you that.””
“Owe me?””
“Yes.””
She glanced toward the dining room.
“At least after everything your father did for me.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“My father?””
Angela slowly walked toward the table.
She picked up the old photograph from where I had placed it.
The one showing her beside my father.
“You never knew the whole story.””
I looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
That angered me more than anything.
Everyone seemed to know pieces of my life except me.
“What story?””
Angela looked at the photograph.
“Your father and I were trying to expose someone.””
“Who?””
Her eyes moved to Vanessa.
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Angela ignored her.
“Your father believed the person stealing from his company wasn’t working alone.””
My chest tightened.
“And?””
“And he was right.””
Silence.
I looked around the room.
“Who was helping them?””
Angela didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she walked toward Vanessa.
“You should tell him.””
Vanessa stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because you’ve already lost control.””
The words cut through the room.
Vanessa looked furious.
“You think you’re better than me?””
Angela smiled sadly.
“No.””
She looked at Lily.
“I think we both made choices we regret.””
That sentence bothered me.
“What does Lily have to do with this?””
Angela looked at my daughter.
“Everything.””
My protective instincts took over.
“Do not involve my daughter.””
Angela’s expression softened.
“Daniel, that’s exactly what your father was afraid of.””
I froze.
“What?””
She placed the photograph back on the table.
“Your father knew someone would eventually come after the people you loved.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Marcus.
Then Lily.
“Why?””
“Because he left something behind.””
“The letter?””
Angela shook her head.
“No.””
My heart dropped.
“What do you mean?””
“The letter is only a warning.””
She looked directly at me.
“The real evidence is hidden somewhere else.””
Thomas suddenly spoke.
“You knew about the evidence?””
Angela looked at him.
“Yes.””
Thomas’ expression changed.
“How?””
She smiled faintly.
“Because I helped hide it.””
The room erupted.
Marcus stepped forward.
“You helped him?””
Angela nodded.
“I was there the night he made the recording.””
My breathing stopped.
“The night he died?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I already knew.
“You were there.””
Angela looked down.
“Yes.””
The words felt impossible.
I remembered the funeral.
I remembered Angela crying.
I remembered believing she was grieving with us.
But she wasn’t just grieving.
She was hiding.
“You let me believe he died alone.””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“He didn’t.””
My voice became quiet.
“Then tell me what happened.””
Angela looked toward the windows.
The entire room waited.
“Your father discovered the theft after reviewing company accounts. He confronted the person responsible.””
“Who?””
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa whispered:
“Angela, stop.””
I turned.
“You’re afraid.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I’m afraid because you don’t know the whole truth.””
“Then tell me.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Angela continued.
“Your father planned to meet the person who was stealing from him. He brought evidence.””
“Where?””
“An old warehouse.””
My father.
A warehouse.
A confrontation.
I felt like I was watching someone else’s life.
“What happened there?””
Angela’s voice became quieter.
“He never made it home.””
Nobody moved.
“He called me afterward.””
I looked at her.
“He was alive?””
Angela nodded.
“He told me someone had tried to hurt him.””
My heart raced.
“What did he say?””
Angela closed her eyes.
“I only remember one thing.””
She looked at me.
“He said, ‘If they come after Daniel, protect him.’”
My vision blurred.
For a moment, I was twenty-two again.
Standing in a hospital hallway.
Waiting for someone to tell me my father was going to be okay.
Waiting for a miracle that never came.
“You knew he was alive after the accident.””
Angela looked away.
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was threatened.””
“By who?””
Angela’s eyes moved slowly toward Vanessa.
Vanessa immediately stepped back.
“No.””
I stared at her.
“No?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“Were you there?””
“No.””
“Were you involved?””
“No.””
“Then why does everyone keep looking at you?””
Her silence was enough.
I walked toward her.
“You married me because of my father’s evidence.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I married you because I loved you.””
“Then why did you hide everything?””
She shook her head.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of who?””
Before she could answer, the lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
The dining room went dark for two seconds.
Then the lights returned.
My security system beeped.
A notification appeared on the wall monitor.
Someone had accessed the cameras.
My stomach tightened.
Thomas moved quickly toward the screen.
“What happened?””
I looked at the monitor.
The live feed showed the outside of my house.
A black vehicle was parked near the gate.
The driver’s door was open.
But nobody was there.
Then another notification appeared.
Motion detected.
Basement.
I froze.
“My basement?””
Everyone looked at me.
“I don’t have anyone in the basement.””
Thomas grabbed the remote.
The camera feed switched.
The basement appeared.
At first, nothing moved.
Then the camera slowly focused.
There was a small table.
A chair.
And a box sitting on top.
A box I had never seen before.
Angela covered her mouth.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You know that box?””
Her face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
“What is it?””
She didn’t answer.
The basement camera zoomed closer.
There was something written on the top of the box.
A name.
My father’s handwriting.
Daniel Carter.
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared from the same unknown number.
*You found the first secret.*
Another message arrived seconds later.
*Now find out why your father hid the second one from you.*
I stared at the screen.
Then the basement camera went black.
May you like
And from somewhere downstairs in my house…
we heard a door slam shut.
