Chapter 4: The Secret Buried Three Years Ago
“Marcus, whatever you do, don't call the police.””
Vanessa's words hung between us.
I stood beside the cream sofa, the diamond-store receipt in one hand and Aaliyah's phone in the other. Afternoon sunlight poured through the windows, catching the tears on Lily's cheeks. My daughter sat pressed against my side, her small fingers wrapped around my wrist.
Three years ago.
The phrase kept repeating in my head.
Three years ago, Lily's mother, Rachel, had died in a car accident on a rainy Thursday evening. I remembered the hospital corridor, the smell of antiseptic, the doctor who couldn't meet my eyes, and the tiny pink blanket I'd carried home because I couldn't bear to leave the hospital with nothing that belonged to her.
I remembered promising Lily that I would always protect her.
Now my wife was telling me not to call the police because someone had sent a message about that very year.
I looked directly at Vanessa.
“What happened three years ago?””
She shook her head.
“Please, Marcus. Not in front of Lily.””
“You should have thought about that before you accused her of stealing.””
Vanessa's eyes flicked toward my daughter.
“I never wanted her involved.””
“Then why did you involve her?””
“I was scared!””
“Of what?””
She pressed her trembling hands against her stomach.
“You don't understand what Daniel is capable of.””
Aaliyah stood abruptly.
“Mom, stop making him sound like some monster. You knew exactly who Daniel was when you started sending him money.””
Vanessa rounded on her.
“You have no idea what you're talking about!””
“I know you cried in the bathroom last month. I know you sold your bracelet. And I know you told someone on the phone that Marcus must never discover what happened to Rachel.””
My heart stopped.
I slowly turned toward Aaliyah.
“What did you just say?””
She covered her mouth.
Vanessa looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.
“Aaliyah,” she whispered, “please.””
I took one step toward my stepdaughter.
“What did your mother say about Rachel?””
Aaliyah's eyes filled with tears.
“She was talking to someone. I was outside the bathroom. I heard her say, ‘He still believes the accident was just an accident.’ Then she started crying.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I gripped the back of the sofa.
“What else?””
“I don't know. She saw me afterward and told me I had misunderstood.””
Vanessa shook her head violently.
“She took everything out of context!””
“Then put it in context,” I demanded.
She looked at me, her lips parting, but no words came.
Lily tugged at my sleeve.
“Daddy, is Mommy Rachel in trouble?””
I knelt immediately.
“No, sweetheart.””
“Why is everybody talking about her?””
I brushed her braids away from her wet cheek.
“Because grown-ups sometimes have questions they need to answer.””
“Did I do something bad?””
My chest tightened.
“No. You didn't do anything bad. Not today. Not ever by asking questions.””
Lily leaned into me.
Behind us, Vanessa made a strangled sound.
“Marcus, please don't do this.””
I stood.
“I'm going to ask you one more time. What happened three years ago?””
Vanessa glanced at the front door.
Then she looked at the two receipts on the table.
“I didn't know Rachel was going to die.””
The sentence struck me so hard that I couldn't speak.
Aaliyah stumbled backward.
Vanessa immediately covered her mouth, as though she'd heard herself say something she could never take back.
I stepped closer.
“What did you just say?””
“I didn't mean it that way.””
“Then what way did you mean it?””
“I never wanted her dead!””
Lily began sobbing.
I turned toward her and held out my arms. She rushed into them, and I lifted her against my chest.
“It's okay, baby. I've got you.””
But nothing was okay.
Vanessa was crying now, her mascara gathering beneath her eyes.
“Marcus, I need you to believe me. I never touched Rachel. I never hurt her.””
“Then why would you say you didn't know she was going to die?””
“Because Daniel told me things afterward. He said there had been a plan, but everything went wrong.””
My blood ran cold.
“A plan?””
Vanessa shut her eyes.
Aaliyah whispered, “Oh, my God.””
I stared at my wife.
“What plan?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I can't.””
“You just told me someone planned something involving Rachel. You don't get to stop there.””
“I don't know the whole story!””
“Then tell me what you do know.””
She wiped her cheeks with the heel of her hand.
“Three years ago, Daniel contacted me after Rachel's accident. He told me he knew things about the crash. Things the police didn't know. He said he could prove that somebody had caused it.””
I could hear my own heartbeat.
“Who?””
“He wouldn't tell me unless I paid him.””
“You paid him?””
“Not at first.””
“How much?””
She looked toward the refund receipt.
“More than I can explain.””
I glanced at the diamond-store receipt.
The eighteen thousand four hundred dollars suddenly felt less like a refund and more like a ransom.
“You sold that ring to pay him?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Daniel said he needed the money immediately. He threatened to release something that would destroy us.””
“Destroy us how?””
She stared at me.
“By revealing what Rachel was doing before she died.””
I felt Lily's arms tighten around my neck.
“What was Rachel doing?””
Vanessa's eyes moved toward the hallway.
“I don't know.””
I gave a bitter laugh.
“Another thing you don't know?””
“I'm telling you the truth!””
“Then tell me why a stranger has been taking money from you for three years.””
“He isn't a stranger!””
The words came out before she could stop them.
Aaliyah froze.
I slowly lowered Lily onto the sofa and stood in front of Vanessa.
“Who is Daniel Cole?””
My wife looked at me with desperate eyes.
“He was the last person Rachel called before the accident.””
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.
Not the air conditioner.
Not Lily's quiet crying.
Not even my own breathing.
Rachel had called me that evening. I remembered her voice on the voicemail, cheerful and hurried, telling me she would pick up Lily's favorite strawberry cupcakes on the way home.
She had never mentioned anyone named Daniel.
I had never seen that name in her phone records.
And the police had told me the accident was caused by the rain.
I reached for the coffee table to steady myself.
“You're telling me you knew this three years ago?””
Vanessa nodded, crying harder.
“I found out afterward.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was afraid!””
“Of Daniel?””
She hesitated.
Then she whispered, “Of what he would tell you about Rachel.””
My phone was in my pocket.
I pulled it out and unlocked the screen.
Vanessa's expression changed immediately.
“Marcus, don't.””
I opened my contacts.
“I'm calling the detective who handled Rachel's accident.””
Vanessa lunged forward, grabbing my wrist.
“NO!””
I pulled away.
“Let go of me.””
“If you call him, Daniel will know!””
“Good. Then maybe he'll finally explain himself.””
“You don't understand!”” Vanessa cried.
“The person who paid Daniel wasn't me!””
I stopped moving.
The room fell silent.
I stared at her.
“Who paid him, then?””
Vanessa's mouth trembled.
She looked at Aaliyah.
Then at Lily.

Finally, she leaned toward me and whispered the words that made the entire room seem to go cold.
“The money originally came from someone in your family.””
