Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything

Vanessa backed into the armchair and gripped its wooden frame.

“He promised he wouldn't tell.””

I held the memory card between my fingers.

“Tell me what?””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, you have to understand—”

“No. I'm finished trying to understand you. You're going to tell me what Daniel meant.””

David remained beside the coffee table, staring at his phone as though he expected the caller to return.

Aaliyah stood between her mother and Lily.

“Mom,” she whispered, “what did you do?””

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

For the first time that afternoon, she seemed to realize that Aaliyah wasn't going to defend her.

“I didn't hurt Rachel,” she said.

“That isn't what he accused you of,” I replied.

She shut her eyes.

“I gave Daniel information.””

“What information?””

“Rachel's schedule. The meetings she planned to attend. The names of the people she was talking to.””

My hands went cold.

“You helped him follow her?””

“I didn't know that was what he was doing!””

“You just admitted you gave him her schedule!””

“He told me he was trying to recover documents she had taken from him. He said she was stealing confidential files.””

“And you believed him?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I wanted to believe him.””

“Why?””

“Because I was already involved. I had signed those documents, Marcus. I was afraid that if I went to the police, I'd lose everything.

My home, my money, Aaliyah's future. Daniel said he could make the problem disappear if I helped him locate the files.””

Aaliyah stared at her mother.

“So you gave him information about Rachel to save yourself?””

Vanessa pressed a hand to her mouth.

“I never thought he'd hurt her.””

“But you knew he was threatening people,” David said.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You paid him too!””

David lowered his head.

“Yes. I did.””

“Then don't stand there pretending you're innocent!””

“I never said I was innocent.””

His admission silenced her.

I placed the memory card on the table.

“What's on this recording?””

David drew a shaky breath.

“Rachel sent me a message the night before the accident. She said she'd recorded a conversation because she didn't trust anyone.””

“Why didn't you tell me this before?””

“Because I couldn't access the file. It was encrypted. I found the card in Dad's office, inside a sealed envelope with Rachel's name on it.””

“Why would Dad have it?””

“I don't know.””

I stared at him.

“Another convenient mystery.””

David accepted the accusation without arguing.

“I deserve that.””

He pulled his phone from his pocket and opened a recording application.

“I made a copy of the file this morning. I haven't listened to all of it.””

“You haven't listened to all of it?””

“I heard enough to know Rachel was right about the financial fraud. I stopped when I heard her say your name.””

“Play it.””

David hesitated.

Then he tapped the screen.

A soft crackle filled the living room.

Rachel's voice emerged from the phone.

“I'm telling you, this has gone too far. Marcus has nothing to do with the transfers.””

My knees weakened.

I hadn't heard her voice in three years except in old videos and voicemails. Hearing her speak in the present tense felt like opening a door into a room I had believed was gone forever.

Another voice answered.

A man.

“You should have stayed out of the accounts, Rachel.””

“I found my husband's signature on documents he never signed. What did you expect me to do?””

“You were supposed to give the files back.””

“They're already with the lawyer.””

A pause.

Then the man spoke again.

“Where are they?””

“Somewhere you can't reach them.””

A sharp noise followed, as though someone had struck a table.

David paused the recording.

I stared at him.

“Keep going.””

He pressed play.

Rachel's voice sounded frightened now, but firm.

“If anything happens to me, Marcus will know what you did.””

The man laughed.

“Marcus doesn't even know what his own family has been doing.””

“Then I'll tell him.””

“You won't get the chance.””

The recording ended abruptly.

Nobody spoke.

Lily had buried her face against Aaliyah's shoulder. Vanessa was crying silently. David stood with his head bowed.

I felt as if I had been pulled apart from the inside.

“Who was that man?”” I asked.

David shook his head.

“I don't know.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the phone.

“You recognize the voice,” I said.

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

She slowly raised her eyes.

“I think it's Daniel.””

“You think?””

“I heard him on the phone so many times. The voice sounds similar.””

David shook his head.

“No. Listen to the last sentence. That wasn't Daniel.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“How can you tell?””

“Because Daniel was the one who gave me the recording. He said it would prove Rachel had stolen the files.””

I looked between them.

“Then who was the man speaking to Rachel?””

David rubbed his face.

“I think there's someone else behind all of this.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

*THE FILES AREN'T ON THE MEMORY CARD. CHECK THE LINING OF RACHEL'S OLD HANDBAG.*

I read it twice.

Then I looked toward the hallway.

Rachel's old handbag was still in the house. I'd kept it in a storage cabinet after her funeral because I couldn't bring myself to throw it away.

I had never opened it.

“Stay with Lily,” I told Aaliyah.

She nodded.

I walked into the hallway and opened the cabinet. The handbag was exactly where I'd left it, tucked behind a folded blanket.

My fingers trembled as I pulled it out.

It was a simple brown leather bag, worn at the corners, with a small brass clasp.

I returned to the living room and placed it on the coffee table.

Vanessa stared at it.

“Marcus, don't.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if those files are still there, Daniel will know we found them.””

“We?””

She lowered her eyes.

I opened the clasp.

Inside were an old wallet, a packet of tissues, a lipstick, and a small envelope containing Lily's baby photographs.

My throat tightened.

Rachel had carried this bag everywhere.

I carefully removed each item and examined the lining. At first, I found nothing.

Then my fingers caught a raised seam near the bottom.

I pressed it.

A tiny section of fabric lifted.

Inside was a slim plastic sleeve containing several folded pages and a small USB drive.

I stared at it.

David leaned forward.

“That's it.””

I unfolded the first page.

It was a list of bank transfers, each linked to an account number and a date. The final page contained a handwritten note in Rachel's unmistakable script.

Marcus, if you're reading this, I couldn't get the truth to you in time.

My vision blurred.

I forced myself to continue.

The money wasn't stolen to enrich one person. It was moved to hide something much worse. Someone has been using our family's company to pay people who make problems disappear.

Below that, she had written a name.

Not Daniel Cole.

Not Vanessa Reed.

Not David Hayes.

The name belonged to someone I had trusted with my daughter's life.

I looked up slowly.

David's face changed as he read the name over my shoulder.

“No,” he whispered.

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“That's impossible.””

Aaliyah stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

I couldn't answer.

Because the name on the page was my mother's.

*ELEANOR HAYES.*

My mother had comforted Lily after Rachel died. She had sat beside me at the funeral and told me that no one could have prevented the accident.

She had helped me raise my daughter.

And according to Rachel's final note, she might have known exactly what had happened.

I gripped the paper.

“Why would my mother be involved?””

David looked at the USB drive.

“Marcus, we need to hear the rest of the recording.””

I inserted the drive into my laptop and opened the only audio file.

Rachel's voice returned, clearer this time.

“If Eleanor refuses to tell the truth, I'm going to the police tomorrow morning.””

A second voice replied.

This time, there was no mistaking it.

My mother's voice.

“You don't understand what you're threatening, Rachel.””

Rachel answered, “I understand perfectly.””

My mother spoke again.

“If you expose this, Marcus will lose everything.””

“I'd rather he lose money than lose his wife.””

There was a long silence.

Then Eleanor said something that made Vanessa collapse into the armchair.

“You should have thought about that before you got pregnant.””

The recording cut off.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel had already been pregnant with Lily when she died.

I had known that.

What I hadn't known was that someone in my family had used her pregnancy as a weapon.

My phone vibrated again.

Another message.

*YOUR MOTHER ISN'T THE ONLY PERSON WHO KNOWS THE TRUTH. ASK VANESSA WHY SHE WAS AT THE HOSPITAL THE NIGHT RACHEL DIED.*

I turned toward my wife.

She was trembling so violently that Aaliyah had to steady her.

“Vanessa,” I said quietly.

“Why were you at the hospital that night?””

May you like

She looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

Then she whispered, “Because Rachel was alive when I arrived.””
