Chapter 6: My Brother at the Door

David stood outside my front door with the brown envelope tucked beneath his arm.

He had the same face I'd known since childhood: the familiar jawline, the slight crease between his eyebrows, the tired smile he used whenever he wanted to make a difficult conversation seem harmless.

But he wasn't smiling now.

Through the glass, I watched him check his phone, glance toward the street, and look back at our house.

He was nervous.

My brother was nervous.

I ended the call and turned toward Vanessa.

“Stay here.””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, don't let him in.””

I stared at her.

“Five minutes ago, you told me not to call the police. Now you're telling me not to let my brother inside. Is there anyone in this family who can tell the truth?””

Vanessa's mouth trembled.

“I'm trying to keep you alive.””

The words made me stop.

“What did you say?””

She looked toward the door.

“Daniel isn't the only person who knows what happened that night.””

I didn't have time to press her.

A knock sounded.

Three sharp raps.

Then David's voice came through the door.

“Marcus? Open up, man. We need to talk.””

I walked to the entrance but kept the deadbolt locked.

“What do you want?””

“To explain.””

“Explain the fifty thousand dollars you sent Daniel Cole?””

Silence.

Then David sighed.

“Vanessa showed you the transfer.””

“Answer the question.””

“Yes, I sent him money.””

My fingers tightened around the doorknob.

“Why?””

“Let me inside.””

“Tell me why.””

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's what Vanessa said.””

“Marcus, please. There's a lot you don't understand.””

“Then start talking.””

David looked down at the envelope.

“Not through a door.””

I glanced back at the living room.

Lily was sitting beside Aaliyah, holding her stuffed bunny against her chest. Her eyes followed me, frightened and uncertain.

I couldn't let another confrontation erupt in front of her.

I unlocked the door but kept my body between David and the living room.

He stepped inside.

His eyes immediately found Vanessa.

“You told him,” he said.

Vanessa stood beside the coffee table, trembling.

“You left me no choice.””

David shook his head.

“I told you never to contact Daniel again.””

“And I told you I couldn't keep paying him!””

“Then you should have called me.””

“I did! You stopped answering!””

David dropped the envelope onto the table.

It landed beside the diamond-store receipt with a heavy slap.

“Because every time I answer, you ask for more money.””

I stared at him.

“You're arguing about money?””

David turned toward me.

“Marcus, listen to me. I didn't kill Rachel.””

The room went silent.

I felt as if somebody had reached into my chest and squeezed my heart.

“Why do you keep saying that?””

“Because I know what you're thinking.””

“You don't know what I'm thinking.””

“You think the payment means I was involved in the accident.””

“Was it?””

David rubbed both hands over his face.

“No.””

“Then why does the transfer say ‘FINAL PAYMENT — ACCIDENT FILE’?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her eyes.

David cursed under his breath.

“That's not what the payment was for.””

“What was it for?””

He hesitated.

I stepped closer.

“David.””

He looked at me, and for the first time in my life, I saw genuine shame in his eyes.

“Rachel came to me three days before the accident,” he said.

“She was frightened.””

My breath caught.

“Frightened of what?””

“She said someone was following her.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I stared at my brother.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she asked me not to.””

“She was my wife!””

“I know that!””

“Then why would you keep something like that from me?””

“Because she believed you were in danger too!””

The words stopped me cold.

David took a breath.

“She came to my office and told me she had discovered something. She wouldn't tell me everything, but she said it involved money, a false identity, and someone she had trusted.””

My mind raced.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Did she mention Daniel Cole?””

David nodded reluctantly.

“She said she'd met him through someone else. She thought he could help her verify some records.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That isn't true.””

David rounded on her.

“You weren't there!””

“I know what Daniel told me!””

“And you believed him?””

“I had no reason not to!””

David laughed harshly.

“You had fifty thousand reasons to doubt him.””

I held up my hand.

“Both of you, stop.””

They fell silent.

I looked at David.

“Tell me what happened after Rachel came to see you.””

He lowered his gaze.

“I offered to help. I told her I'd hire a private investigator. She said she already had someone looking into it.””

“Daniel?””

“I think so.””

“And then?””

“Three days later, Rachel died.””

My throat tightened.

“What did you do?””

“I called the police. I told them everything I knew about the accident.””

“Everything?””

David's silence answered me.

I took a step backward.

“You lied to the police?””

“I didn't tell them about the money.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel contacted me after the funeral. He said he had evidence that Rachel's death wasn't an accident. He threatened to release documents that would implicate me in something I hadn't done.””

“What documents?””

“I don't know. He never showed me the originals.””

I stared at him.

“So you paid him fifty thousand dollars to keep quiet.””

“I paid him to give me the evidence.””

“And did he?””

David shook his head.

“No. He sent me copies of a few documents, then demanded more money.””

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

“That's exactly what he did to me.””

David turned toward her.

“What did you give him?””

She didn't answer.

“What did you give him, Vanessa?””

“The ring.””

“Only the ring?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

David took a step toward her.

“What else did you send him?””

She shook her head.

I moved between them.

“Enough. Nobody is going to threaten anybody in this house.””

David looked exhausted.

“Marcus, I came here because Daniel contacted me again this morning.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?””

David opened the brown envelope and removed a printed photograph.

He laid it on the coffee table.

The image showed Rachel standing beside a black sedan outside a small brick building. She wore the blue coat she'd been wearing the week before the accident.

A man stood beside her.

His face was partially turned away from the camera.

I picked up the photograph.

“Is this Daniel?””

David nodded.

“Taken two days before she died.””

My fingers trembled.

“Where did you get this?””

“From Daniel.””

I turned the photograph over.

On the back, someone had written a date and a short sentence in black ink.

*SHE KNEW WHO WAS IN THE CAR.*

I looked up.

“Whose car?””

David shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa began pacing.

“This is exactly why I told you not to call the police. Daniel has been sending these messages to scare us.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew about this photograph?””

“No.””

“Then why are you so afraid of it?””

“Because I know what he's capable of!””

David grabbed the photograph from my hand.

“That's enough. We need to get rid of everything Daniel sent.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“The photographs. The transfer confirmation. The receipts. All of it.””

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel has copies, he'll use them against us.””

I stepped between David and the table.

“No one is destroying anything.””

His expression hardened.

“Marcus, you don't understand what you're doing.””

“Then explain it.””

“I can't.””

I shook my head slowly.

“That's the problem with both of you. You keep telling me I'm not ready for the truth, but you never give me a reason to trust you.””

David's shoulders slumped.

For a moment, he looked less like my older brother and more like a frightened man who had run out of excuses.

Then Lily's small voice came from the sofa.

“Daddy?””

I turned immediately.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

She was staring at the photograph.

Her face had gone pale.

I crossed the room and knelt beside her.

“Baby, what is it?””

Lily pointed at the black sedan.

“I've seen that car before.””

My heart began pounding.

“Where?””

She hugged her stuffed bunny tighter.

“At Grandma's house. Before Mommy died.””

David went completely still.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I took Lily's hand.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded slowly.

“Mommy was talking to someone in the driveway. She told me to stay inside, but I looked through the window.””

I kept my voice gentle.

“Do you remember who was driving?””

Lily stared at the photograph for a long moment.

Then she looked at her uncle.

And whispered, “It was Uncle David.””

Nobody moved.

David's face drained of color.

“That isn't possible,” he said.

Lily began to cry.

“You told Mommy not to tell Daddy.””

I slowly stood.

David backed away from the coffee table, shaking his head.

“Marcus, she's seven. She could be remembering something incorrectly.””

I looked at my brother.

“Then why do you look terrified?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

My phone vibrated on the table.

A new message appeared from the same unknown number.

*YOUR DAUGHTER REMEMBERS MORE THAN YOU THINK.*

Beneath it was a second message.

*ASK DAVID WHY HE WAS AT THE CRASH SITE BEFORE THE POLICE ARRIVED.*

I raised my eyes toward my brother.

He stared at the phone.

Then he looked at Lily.

And finally, he whispered the words that shattered the last piece of trust I had left.

“Marcus, I can explain why I was there.””

May you like

He swallowed hard.

“But first, you need to understand that Rachel wasn't the person Daniel was trying to kill.””
