Chapter 10: The Letter Rachel Never Wanted Me To Read
The paper shook in my hands.
Not because I was afraid of Vanessa anymore.
Because I was afraid of Rachel.
Afraid of what my late wife had known.
Afraid of what she had seen coming.
Afraid that while I was building a new life, she had been fighting a battle alone.
I looked down at the letter again.
“If you are reading this, then Vanessa has already taken something from my daughter.””
The room was silent.
Even Vanessa stopped crying.
Maya stood beside me, holding her arms around herself.
“Dad…”
I looked at her.
“I’m going to read this.””
She nodded.
Slowly.
Together, we faced the truth Rachel had hidden.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, it means I was right to worry.
My first instinct was to stop.
Because Rachel’s words sounded like she was sitting beside me.
Like she knew this moment would happen.
Vanessa has always been charming when she needs something. That is her greatest strength. She knows how to make people believe they are saving her when she is actually saving herself.
I looked up at Vanessa.
She looked away.
I continued.
I met Vanessa years ago when we were both struggling. I helped her because I believed people deserved second chances. I believed kindness could change someone.
My fingers tightened around the letter.
But kindness without boundaries becomes something people use.
Maya moved closer.
“What happened between them?””
I didn’t answer.
Not yet.
The letter continued.
Vanessa knew about my illness before you did.
I stopped.
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Maya looked confused.
“Mom’s illness?””
I stared at the page.
Rachel had been sick before she told me how serious it was.
She told me she didn’t want me to spend every day worrying.
She told me she wanted to enjoy the time we had.
But Vanessa knew.
Before me.
I kept reading.
She asked questions about my finances. She asked about Maya’s future. She asked what would happen if I wasn’t there anymore.
At first, I thought she was concerned.
Then I realized she wasn’t asking because she cared.
She was studying.
The word hit hard.
Studying.
Like Maya was a problem to solve.
Like my family was an opportunity.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Is this true?””
Her lips parted.
“I…”
“Is this true?””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
Maya stepped back.
“You knew Mom was dying?””
Vanessa looked at her.
“I knew she was sick.””
“And you still became part of our family?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“I loved your father.””
Maya shook her head.
“That’s not what I asked.””
The silence after that was painful.
I read the final part of Rachel’s letter.
Marcus, I need you to understand something. Vanessa is not dangerous because she wants money. She is dangerous because she convinces people that hurting them is the same as helping them.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked broken.
But Rachel’s words stayed in my mind.
People could regret what they did.
But regret didn’t erase damage.
The letter continued.
I created protections for Maya because I knew you would give anyone you loved the benefit of the doubt. That is your greatest gift and your greatest weakness.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Because Rachel knew me.
She always knew me.
The final sentence made me stop.
If Vanessa ever gains control of Maya’s trust, find the original agreement. Not the copy. The original.
I looked up.
“Original agreement?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?””
“You know something about this.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You reacted.””
“I just…”
She stopped.
I stepped closer.
“Where is the original?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I don’t have it.””
“Then who does?””
She didn’t answer.
Maya whispered:
“Vanessa.””
Vanessa looked at her.
And the guilt on her face said everything.
“You do know.””
Finally, Vanessa broke.
“I know where it is.””
My heart pounded.
“Where?””
She swallowed.
“Someone else has it.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“Your brother.””
I froze.
My brother.
Daniel.
The person who had been standing beside me my entire life.
The person who helped me after Rachel died.
The person who told me to move forward.
The person who encouraged me to trust Vanessa.
“No.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Maya looked between us.
“Why would Uncle Daniel have Mom’s documents?””
I had no answer.
Because suddenly the betrayal wasn’t coming from one person.
It was spreading.
I grabbed my phone.
I called Daniel.
He answered after two rings.
“Marcus?””
His voice sounded normal.
Too normal.
“Daniel.””
“What’s wrong?””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at Maya.
Then at Rachel’s letter.
“I need to ask you something.””
A pause.
“Okay.””
“Do you have the original documents for Maya’s trust?””
Silence.
Only three seconds.
But three seconds was enough.
My brother sighed.
May you like
And my blood went cold.
“Where did you find out about that?””
