Chapter 12: The Person Behind Everything

The room went completely silent.

“The person who introduced Vanessa to your family.””

I stared at Daniel.

“What are you saying?””

He looked down.

“I’m saying Vanessa wasn’t the beginning.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

“You knew?””

I asked her.

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why are you scared?””

She didn’t answer.

Daniel sat down.

“Because the truth is worse than what you think.””

I opened the folder again.

The original trust agreement was there.

Untouched.

Protected.

Everything Rachel wanted me to find.

But underneath it was another document.

A list of names.

Dates.

Connections.

I scanned the page.

Then stopped.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Daniel saw my face.

“You understand now.””

“No.””

I looked up.

“I don’t.””

He pointed to the paper.

“Rachel was investigating money movements before she died.””

My stomach tightened.

“She thought Vanessa was working with someone.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Someone close.””

I stared.

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Your father.””

The room stopped.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“He had access to old family accounts.””

“That’s impossible.””

“He was involved in investments.””

“My father died before Rachel.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“Because the person Rachel was investigating continued what he started.””

I felt dizzy.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

Her voice was barely audible.

“Me.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I was the one who found the documents after Rachel started asking questions.””

My heart pounded.

“You said Daniel had them.””

“He did.””

“Then why?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because Rachel confronted me.””

“When?””

“Three days before she passed away.””

I froze.

Three days.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Because she knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That I was involved.””

Maya appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Dad?””

I turned immediately.

“Maya, go back upstairs.””

“No.””

Her voice surprised me.

She walked down slowly.

“I want to hear.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t need to carry this.””

She shook her head.

“I’ve been carrying it anyway.””

Nobody spoke.

Because she was right.

Maya looked at Vanessa.

“What did my mom say to you?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“She told me I still had a choice.””

“A choice?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“She said I could tell the truth.””

“And you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because I was afraid.””

Maya nodded slowly.

“Everyone was afraid.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Daniel opened another file.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What now?””

He placed a small recording device on the table.

My eyes narrowed.

“What is that?””

“Rachel recorded conversations.””

My heart raced.

“She recorded Vanessa?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Who?””

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

A man’s voice.

Older.

Familiar.

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Everyone in the room knew that voice.

My father.

A recording from years ago.

A voice from someone who should have been gone.

The recording played.

“Vanessa, you need to understand something. Marcus is emotional. He will always choose love over logic.””

I felt sick.

Daniel looked at me.

The recording continued.

“If you want control, you have to make him believe he’s saving you.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Maya stepped closer to me.

The voice continued.

“And once the trust is accessible, everything becomes easier.””

I stopped the recording.

I couldn’t listen anymore.

My hands were shaking.

“My father…”

Daniel nodded.

“He started this.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Daniel pushed the final document toward me.

A transfer record.

An old company name.

A signature.

And a date.

A date after my father had died.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then I saw the signature.

Not my father’s.

Not Vanessa’s.

Someone else’s.

Someone still alive.

Someone who had been standing in my house.

Someone who had been pretending to help me find the truth.

I slowly looked at Daniel.

“Who signed this?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

He didn’t need to.

The signature was clear.

My hands went cold.

Because the person behind everything was not a stranger.

May you like

It was family.

And they had been waiting fourteen years for me to discover it.
