Chapter 5: The Secret Before The Marriage
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was angry.
Anger would have been easier.
I stayed awake because every memory I had with Vanessa was suddenly fighting with what I knew now.
The dinners.
The holidays.
The family pictures.
All those moments I thought were real.
I sat alone in my office, staring at the document Vanessa gave me.
My signature was there.
My handwriting.
My name.
But I didn’t remember signing it.
The next morning, I found Maya sitting on the back steps.
She was wearing a hoodie over her pajamas.
Her knees were pulled to her chest.
I sat beside her.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, “Are you mad at me?””
I turned toward her.
“Why would I be mad at you?””
“Because I knew.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I knew something was wrong.””
She looked down.
“I just didn’t know how bad.””
I took a breath.
“Maya, none of this is your fault.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I should have told you.””
“You were scared.””
She didn’t deny it.
“I didn’t want you to fight with Vanessa.””
I looked at my daughter.
“You were protecting the person hurting you.””
She shrugged.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
That sentence hurt more than anything.
Because she was a child trying to solve an adult problem.
I reached for her hand.
“You never have to carry something like this alone.””
She nodded.
Then she looked at me.
“Dad?””
“Yeah?””
“What was in that folder?””
I hesitated.
I didn’t want to put more weight on her.
But I also promised myself I would never hide the truth from her again.
“I’m not sure yet.””
Maya studied my face.
“You’re scared.””
I looked away.
Because she was right.
Later that morning, I met with the bank manager.
The same woman who helped me open Maya’s trust years ago.
She placed several files on the desk.
“Mr. Carter, I’m sorry this happened.””
I looked at the documents.
“How could this happen without me knowing?””
She folded her hands.
“There were authorized access forms.””
“Authorized by who?””
She paused.
Then slid a paper toward me.
I read the name.
Vanessa Carter.
My stomach turned.
“She had access?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The manager looked confused.
“You signed the form.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
She turned the paper around.
“Your signature is here.””
My hands went cold.
Because it was mine.
But something was wrong.
The signature looked like mine.
It felt like mine.
But I knew I never signed that document.
“I need a copy.””
She nodded.
“Of course.””
When I returned home, Vanessa was waiting in the kitchen.
She looked exhausted.
“You went to the bank.””
“Yes.””
She looked down.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I placed the copies on the counter.
“You don’t get to explain before you answer my question.””
She swallowed.
“Okay.””
“Did you forge my signature?””
Her face went completely still.
That was my answer.
“You did.””
“Marcus, listen—”
“No.””
My voice was louder now.
“No more excuses.””
She stepped closer.
“I was desperate.””
“You forged my name.””
“I was trying to help my children.””
“My daughter is your child too.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“No, she isn’t.””
The words came out before she could stop them.
Silence.
She realized what she said.
I realized too.
And something inside me finally broke.
“Maya heard you say things like that for years, didn’t she?””
Vanessa looked away.
I didn’t need an answer.
That night, I sat with Maya and showed her the documents.
She looked at the papers.
Then at me.
“Dad…”
Her voice shook.
“Does this mean she never loved me?””
I wanted to give her the easy answer.
The comforting answer.
But I had learned something.
Lies didn’t protect people.
So I told her the truth.
“I don’t know.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
And for the first time in months, she didn’t hide it.
The next morning, I packed a bag.
Not mine.
Vanessa’s.
When she saw it near the front door, she froze.
“You’re kicking me out?””
I looked at her.
“I’m asking you to leave until I understand everything.””
Her eyes filled.
“You’re destroying our family.””
I looked toward Maya’s bedroom.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m finding out who destroyed it.””
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she whispered something I never expected.
“You need to ask Maya what happened the night before I married you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“You think I’m the only person keeping secrets.””
She walked toward the door.
Then turned around.
“Ask your daughter.””
The door closed.
May you like
And I stood there wondering one thing.
What did Maya know about the day Vanessa entered our lives?
