Chapter 3: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
“Anthony Carter?””
The name fell into the courtroom like a stone dropped into still water.
Daniel stopped breathing for a second.
He stared at Judge Harris, waiting for him to say something else.
Anything else.
But the judge only looked back at the document in his hand.
Daniel slowly shook his head.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Then louder.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Claire looked at him.
“Daniel…”
He didn’t hear her.
His eyes remained fixed on the paper.
Anthony Carter.
His older brother.
The man who taught him how to ride a bike.
The man who stood beside him at their father’s funeral.
The man who had hugged Lily the day she was born and whispered, “Your uncle is always going to protect you.””
Daniel felt something inside him break.
Because suddenly every memory had a shadow.
Every moment had a question.
Judge Harris noticed his reaction.
“Mr. Carter, are you saying you do not know this person?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I know him.””
The courtroom waited.
“He’s my brother.””
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Like she had been expecting this moment.
Daniel turned toward her.
“You knew?””
Vanessa looked up.
“I didn’t know he was your brother when it started.””
“When what started?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
Daniel stepped closer.
“When what started, Vanessa?””
Judge Harris raised his hand.
“Mr. Carter, please remain calm.””
But Daniel wasn’t looking for calm anymore.
He was looking for the truth.
For two years, he had watched his daughter become afraid of things she couldn’t explain.
He had watched Vanessa turn every disagreement into a battle.
He had spent nights wondering if he was failing as a father.
And now he was standing in a courtroom hearing that his own brother might be connected to it.
Marcus Reed looked at Daniel.
“I know this is difficult.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“Difficult?””
His voice cracked.
“My daughter was threatened.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“And I know.””
“You knew everything?””
“No.””
Marcus looked toward Lily.
“I knew enough to be afraid.””
Lily sat silently.
Her feet barely touched the floor.
Daniel noticed something.
She wasn’t looking at Vanessa.
She wasn’t looking at Marcus.
She was looking at the backpack beside her.
The backpack that held the recorder.
Like she was afraid there was something else inside.
Daniel walked toward her.
“Lily.””
She looked up.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
But Daniel knew his daughter.
A fake smile was something she had learned too early.
“Lily,” he said softly, “what else is in the backpack?””
Her eyes widened.
For a moment, she didn’t answer.
Then she slowly reached down.
“Dad…”
Daniel knelt.
“It’s okay.””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“It’s not.””
The courtroom became quiet.
Lily pulled out a folded piece of paper.
It was wrinkled.
Like it had been opened and closed many times.
She handed it to him.
Daniel unfolded it.
Three sentences were written in messy handwriting.
WE KNOW WHAT YOUR FATHER IS DOING.
STOP ASKING QUESTIONS.
OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE WILL GET HURT.
Daniel felt his hands shake.
Claire covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
Judge Harris looked at the paper.
“Where did you get that?””
Lily looked down.
“Inside my notebook.””
“When?””
“Last week.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because they said you would disappear.””
The room went completely silent.
Daniel felt his heart collapse.
He reached for her.
This time nobody stopped him.
He walked over and held his daughter.
Lily buried her face against his shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“No, sweetheart.””
His voice broke.
“You never have to apologize for being scared.””
Behind them, Vanessa started crying.
But Daniel didn’t look at her.
Not yet.
Because he was trying to understand something.
Someone had been watching his daughter.
Someone had been close enough to leave messages.
Someone knew what scared her.
Judge Harris turned toward the bailiff.
“We need to preserve every piece of evidence in this courtroom.””
The bailiff nodded.
Marcus suddenly spoke.
“There’s more.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel slowly turned.
“What more?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
Like he hated every word he was about to say.
“Anthony Carter wasn’t just involved.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
“He was the one who introduced me to her.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus continued.
“Anthony contacted me first.””
“Why?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he said:
“He wanted information about you.””
Daniel felt a chill run through him.
“Information about me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at the judge.
“Because Daniel Carter was getting too close to discovering the truth.””
Daniel laughed once.
A confused, broken laugh.
“What truth?””
Nobody answered.
Judge Harris leaned forward.
“Mr. Reed, enough with vague statements. Explain.””
Marcus nodded.
“Anthony believed Daniel was about to find financial records connected to a company called Carter Holdings.””
Daniel frowned.
“That’s my father’s old company.””
“Yes.””
“My family’s company.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked confused.
“My father died ten years ago.””
Marcus nodded.
“And after his death, certain records disappeared.””
Daniel felt a memory surface.
His father’s old office.
The locked filing cabinet.
The argument between Anthony and their father three days before the funeral.
At the time, everyone said it was about business.
Daniel had believed that.
Because Anthony was his brother.
Because family was supposed to mean trust.
Judge Harris looked at Daniel.
“Did your father have business disputes before his death?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Yes.””
“With whom?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“With investors.””
Marcus interrupted.
“Not just investors.””
Daniel looked up.
“What are you saying?””
Marcus reached into his jacket.
The bailiff immediately stepped forward.
“Slowly.””
Marcus carefully removed a small envelope.
“I was hoping I would never have to show this.””
He handed it over.
Judge Harris opened it.
Inside was an old photograph.
Daniel couldn’t see it clearly.
“What is it?””
The judge stared at it.
Then looked at Daniel.
“Mr. Carter, you should see this.””
Daniel walked forward.
The judge handed him the photo.
The second he saw it, his knees almost gave out.
It was a picture of his father.
Standing beside Anthony.
And beside them…
Was Vanessa.
But the picture was old.
Older than Lily.
Older than Daniel’s marriage.
Daniel stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa whispered.
“I can explain.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew my family before me?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Claire looked between them.
“Daniel…”
He shook his head.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on Vanessa.
“How long?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Since before you and I met.””
Daniel stepped back.
The person he had trusted with his daughter.
The person who had spent years fighting him in court.
Had been connected to his family long before he knew.
Judge Harris looked at Vanessa.
“Ms. Carter, what is your connection to Anthony Carter?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then the courtroom lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
A second later, every screen in the courtroom went black.
The security monitors.
The recording system.
The courtroom cameras.
All of them.
The bailiff touched his radio.
“Security, report.””
Static answered.
Then a voice came through.
A distorted voice.
But everyone recognized the words.
“Stop asking questions.””
Daniel turned toward Lily.
Because it was the same sentence from the note.
The voice continued.
“You were warned.””
Claire grabbed Lily’s hand.
Judge Harris stood.
“Who is speaking?””
No answer.
Only static.
Then one final sentence.
A sentence that made Vanessa collapse into her chair.
“Anthony was never the one you needed to fear.””
The courtroom doors suddenly unlocked.
And someone outside began knocking.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
Then a familiar voice came from the other side.
“Daniel…”
Daniel’s face turned pale.
May you like
Because he knew that voice.
It was Anthony.
