Chapter 8: The Night Everything Fell Apart

The words refused to leave Daniel’s mind.

The person who killed our father is standing in this room.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The courtroom that had been filled with accusations, secrets, and impossible revelations became completely silent.

Daniel looked at every face.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

Robert.

Anthony.

Even himself reflected faintly in the dark courtroom windows.

Someone in this room had taken his father away.

Someone had allowed Daniel to spend ten years believing it was an accident.

Someone had watched him build a life on top of a lie.

“Anthony,” Daniel said quietly.

His brother looked at him.

“Tell me.””

Anthony swallowed.

“I need you to understand something first.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“No.””

His voice echoed.

“No more explanations before the truth.””

Anthony nodded.

“You’re right.””

He looked down.

“The night Dad died, I followed him.””

Daniel froze.

“Why?””

“Because I thought he was meeting someone about the company.””

“Victor?””

Anthony shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Anthony looked toward the evidence table.

Toward the old photograph.

“Robert.””

Everyone turned.

Robert’s face changed.

Daniel looked at his uncle.

“What?””

Robert immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Anthony stepped forward.

“You were there.””

Robert’s breathing became heavier.

“I was trying to help.””

Daniel stared.

“Everybody says that.””

The pain in his voice was obvious.

“Everyone says they were trying to help.””

Robert looked down.

“Because we were.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“My father died.””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the one fact nobody could explain away.

Anthony continued.

“I followed Dad to the warehouse.””

Daniel frowned.

“What warehouse?””

“The old Carter Holdings storage building.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“The one near the river?””

Anthony nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus whispered:

“That place was supposed to be empty.””

Anthony looked at him.

“It wasn’t.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What happened there?””

Anthony closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked much older.

“I arrived after the argument started.””

“Between who?””

Anthony looked at Robert.

“Dad and Robert.””

Robert looked away.

Daniel stared at his uncle.

“Why were you arguing?””

Robert’s voice was barely audible.

“Because your father found out.””

“Found out what?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Judge Harris stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter.””

Robert looked at him.

“You will answer.””

Robert took a deep breath.

“I was moving money.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“You stole from him.””

Robert shook his head.

“I borrowed from accounts I managed.””

“That’s stealing.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Anthony nodded.

“Dad discovered it.””

Daniel looked at Anthony.

“And then?””

Anthony hesitated.

“I saw Victor arrive.””

The room changed.

Marcus immediately looked up.

“Victor was there?””

“Yes.””

Daniel felt his hands curl into fists.

“What happened?””

Anthony looked at him.

“Dad told Victor he was going public.””

Daniel stared.

“With what?””

Anthony’s voice lowered.

“The entire operation.””

Judge Harris frowned.

“Operation?””

Anthony nodded.

“Victor wasn’t just taking money.””

He looked at Marcus.

“He was controlling companies, people, and information.””

Marcus added quietly:

“He collected secrets.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Like what?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Anthony did.

“Like the fact that people were willing to destroy their own families to protect themselves.””

The sentence hit everyone.

Vanessa looked down.

Robert looked ashamed.

Daniel looked at Anthony.

“What happened next?””

Anthony took a breath.

“Victor and Dad argued.””

“Then?””

“Then I heard a sound.””

Daniel knew before Anthony said it.

A gunshot.

Nobody spoke.

Anthony continued.

“Dad fell.””

Lily gasped.

Claire immediately covered her ears.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

He hated that she was hearing this.

He hated that she knew more about darkness than any child should.

Judge Harris noticed.

“Mr. Carter, we will continue only if the child is protected from unnecessary details.””

Daniel nodded.

Anthony continued more carefully.

“I didn’t see everything.””

Daniel looked at him.

“But you saw enough.””

Anthony nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who held the weapon?””

Anthony looked down.

That was the longest silence yet.

Then he said:

“Victor.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For ten years, he had wondered.

Now he had an answer.

But it didn’t feel like victory.

It felt like losing his father all over again.

Judge Harris turned toward Marcus.

“You knew this?””

Marcus nodded.

“I suspected.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You suspected?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I didn’t have proof.””

“You had a recording.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“The recording only proved Victor was involved later.””

Daniel stared.

“What about Vanessa?””

Everyone looked at her.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I didn’t know about the murder.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“But you knew Victor.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was dangerous.””

“Yes.””

“And you still worked with him.””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“I thought I could keep Lily safe.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You keep saying that.””

“I was wrong.””

The honesty surprised him.

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“I was wrong about everything.””

Lily stared back.

For the first time all day, Vanessa didn’t look like a villain.

She looked like someone finally facing what she had done.

Judge Harris looked at Anthony.

“If Victor killed your father, why did you stay silent?””

Anthony’s face collapsed.

“Because I was scared.””

Daniel said nothing.

Anthony continued.

“I was twenty-eight. I had just lost my father. I had no proof. Victor told me if I spoke, Daniel would disappear too.””

Daniel froze.

“Me?””

Anthony nodded.

“He knew you were Dad’s weakness.””

The room went quiet.

“Dad loved you more than anything.””

Daniel looked away.

Anthony continued.

“He said you were the only person in the family who still believed people could change.””

Daniel’s eyes burned.

Because that sounded exactly like his father.

Too forgiving.

Too trusting.

Judge Harris looked at the evidence.

“We need to recover those records.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You know where the location is?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Only Victor knew the full plan.””

Anthony suddenly stood straighter.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Anthony reached into his jacket.

“I know.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Anthony pulled out a small key.

An old metal key.

“I found this after Dad died.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then why didn’t you say anything?””

Anthony looked at the key.

“Because I was afraid of what it opened.””

Judge Harris took it.

“Any idea?””

Anthony nodded.

“A safety deposit box.””

“Where?””

Anthony looked at Daniel.

“At the bank where Dad kept his personal records.””

Daniel remembered.

The old family bank.

The place his father used to take him every summer.

A place filled with memories.

Judge Harris looked at the bailiff.

“We need immediate access.””

The bailiff nodded.

But before anyone moved—

The courtroom lights went dark.

Not flickering.

Gone.

A collective gasp filled the room.

Daniel immediately moved toward Lily.

“Claire.””

“I have her.””

The emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Low.

Then the courtroom speakers crackled.

Victor’s voice returned.

“Still chasing the past?””

Daniel looked around.

“Victor!””

A laugh.

“You always were your father’s favorite.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Where are you?””

“Closer than you think.””

Everyone looked around.

Marcus suddenly walked toward the windows.

“Wait.””

He stared outside.

“What?””

Marcus pointed.

A car was parked across the street.

Inside it—

A figure sat watching the courthouse.

Daniel recognized the silhouette.

Victor.

The speakers continued.

“You want the records.””

Nobody spoke.

“Fine.””

The voice became colder.

“I’ll give you a choice.””

Judge Harris looked up.

“What choice?””

Victor answered.

“Save the evidence…”

A pause.

“Or save the person who has been protecting Lily this entire time.””

Daniel froze.

“What are you talking about?””

The security monitor turned on.

A live feed appeared.

A room.

A chair.

Someone tied to it.

Everyone stared.

Then Daniel’s heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person on the screen…

Was Claire.
