Chapter 6: The Family Member Who Sold the Secret
The courtroom door closed behind the person who had just entered.
No one spoke.
Not because they had nothing to say.
Because every word felt impossible.
Daniel stared at the figure standing only a few feet away.
His mind rejected what his eyes were seeing.
“No…”
The person looked at him with tired eyes.
Not angry.
Not proud.
Just tired.
“I know.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No, you don’t get to say that.””
The courtroom waited.
Judge Harris looked between them.
“Identify yourself.””
The person took a slow breath.
“My name is Robert Carter.””
Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.
Robert.
His uncle.
His father’s younger brother.
The man who used to bring him baseball cards when he was a child.
The man who hugged Lily at family gatherings.
The man who called Daniel “son” after his own father died.
Daniel looked at Anthony.
Then Vanessa.
Then Robert.
“You?””
Robert lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it destroyed something inside Daniel.
“You were there.””
Robert nodded.
“Where?””
“Everywhere.””
The words made Claire pull Lily closer.
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“You were at my house.””
Robert didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
“You watched my daughter.””
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped forward.
The bailiff moved immediately.
“Mr. Carter.””
Daniel stopped.
But his eyes never left Robert.
“Why?””
Robert looked at Lily.
And for the first time, he looked ashamed.
“Because Victor wanted to know if the recorder had been found.””
Daniel felt anger rise.
“You let him scare her?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Daniel almost laughed.
“No?””
Robert looked at him.
“I never wanted Lily hurt.””
“Then why were you there?””
Robert looked down.
“Because I was trying to fix what I helped break.””
Nobody believed him.
Not completely.
Judge Harris crossed his arms.
“Mr. Carter, you are asking this court to believe that you participated in a scheme against this family, but you were secretly trying to stop it?””
Robert nodded.
“Yes.””
Judge Harris looked unimpressed.
“That is convenient.””
“I know.””
“Everyone here seems to know everything after the damage is done.””
The statement hit hard.
Robert accepted it.
Because he deserved it.
Daniel stared at his uncle.
“How long?””
Robert hesitated.
“How long what?””
“How long did you know?””
Robert looked away.
Daniel’s voice sharpened.
“How long did you know Victor was involved?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Seven years.””
Daniel felt numb.
Seven years.
Seven years of birthdays.
Seven years of holidays.
Seven years of Robert sitting at their table.
Seven years of pretending to be family.
“You knew before Dad died.””
The room went quiet.
Robert didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
Daniel’s face changed.
“My father knew about you.””
Robert whispered:
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped back.
“What happened?””
Robert looked at the floor.
“Your father found the missing money.””
Anthony nodded slowly.
“He found all of it.””
Daniel looked at Anthony.
“And you?””
Anthony’s face tightened.
“I knew some of it.””
Daniel turned back to Robert.
“And you helped hide it?””
Robert shook his head.
“I tried to stop it.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You all keep saying that.””
His voice cracked.
“You all say you tried.””
He pointed around the courtroom.
“My daughter was threatened.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“My family was lied to.””
He looked at Anthony.
“My father’s legacy was destroyed.””
Then he looked at Robert.
“And you were standing there the whole time.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
Judge Harris sat down slowly.
“Mr. Carter, I want facts.””
Robert nodded.
“I’ll tell you everything.””
“Start with Victor Hale.””
Robert looked toward the dark courtroom screen.
“Victor didn’t become powerful because he was smarter than everyone.””
“Then how?””
“Because he knew what people were afraid of.””
Daniel listened.
Robert continued.
“He knew Anthony was afraid of losing everything.””
Anthony looked away.
“He knew Vanessa was afraid of losing Lily.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“And he knew I was afraid of the truth coming out.””
Judge Harris leaned forward.
“What truth?””
Robert looked at Daniel.
“The truth about your father’s death.””
The room went silent.
Daniel felt his heart stop.
“My father died in an accident.””
Robert didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel’s voice became a whisper.
“Tell me.””
Robert looked at him.
“Your father was supposed to meet someone the night he died.””
“Who?””
Robert glanced at Anthony.
“Victor.””
Daniel froze.
“But the police said—”
“The police were given the wrong information.””
Daniel felt sick.
“Who gave it?””
Robert said nothing.
Judge Harris’s voice was firm.
“Answer.””
Robert swallowed.
“Me.””
The courtroom reacted.
Daniel stared.
“You lied to the police?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Robert’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because Victor threatened my family.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Robert didn’t argue.
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse.
Daniel looked at Lily.
She was watching everything.
Listening.
Learning that adults could fail.
That family could lie.
That promises could break.
He walked over to her.
“Lily.””
She looked up.
“Is everyone bad?””
The question destroyed him.
Daniel knelt.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“Some people make bad choices.””
Lily looked toward Robert.
“Even family?””
Daniel paused.
Then answered honestly.
“Even family.””
Robert looked away.
Because he knew he was one of those people.
Suddenly, Marcus spoke.
“There’s something missing.””
Everyone turned.
Marcus looked at Robert.
“You didn’t come here because you wanted forgiveness.””
Robert remained silent.
“You came because Victor knows you betrayed him.””
Robert’s face changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus stepped closer.
“It means Robert is not the only person Victor has been watching.””
The courtroom became tense again.
Judge Harris looked at Marcus.
“Explain.””
Marcus pointed at the evidence table.
“The records.””
The judge frowned.
“What about them?””
“Victor doesn’t just want them destroyed.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“He wants them.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why?””
Anthony answered.
“Because those records prove who really owns the company.””
Daniel froze.
“I thought the company was gone.””
Anthony shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Robert.
“Dad never sold it.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Anthony nodded.
“He transferred ownership.””
“To who?””
Anthony looked at Lily.
Daniel followed his eyes.
Then his face changed.
“No.””
Anthony’s voice was quiet.
“Dad put it in a trust.””
Daniel stared.
“For who?””
Anthony looked at him.
“For the person he trusted most.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Me?””
Anthony shook his head.
“No.””
The courtroom held its breath.
Anthony continued.
“Your daughter.””
Everything stopped.
Daniel looked at Lily.
“What?””
Anthony nodded.
“Dad created a trust for his future grandchild before she was even born.””
Daniel couldn’t speak.
Victor wasn’t chasing the company.
He wasn’t chasing money.
He was chasing Lily.
Judge Harris immediately looked at the documents.
“Is this verified?””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s why he wanted her.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“You knew?””
She broke down.
“I knew he was interested in the trust.””
Daniel stared.
“And you still let him near her?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I thought I could control it.””
Daniel looked away.
Because there was nothing left to say.
Then the courtroom lights flickered again.
Everyone looked up.
The security screen turned on.
But this time, it wasn’t Victor.
It showed a live feed.
A hallway.
A parked car outside.
And inside the car…
Was Lily’s backpack.
Daniel froze.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire looked at the screen.
“Her backpack was here.””
Lily suddenly screamed.
“Dad!””
Everyone turned.
Her face was filled with terror.
She pointed at the screen.
“That’s not my backpack.””
Daniel looked closer.
He saw it.
The color.
The shape.
The tiny mark on the zipper.
It looked exactly like Lily’s.
But then the camera zoomed in.
A small note was attached to it.
Three words.
YOU FOUND THE FIRST ONE.
Daniel felt his blood run cold.
Because he understood.
The recorder.
The threats.
The courtroom.
Everything.
It had never been the end of Victor’s plan.
It was only the beginning.
Then the courtroom speakers came alive one more time.
Victor’s voice whispered:
“Now let’s see what happens when Daniel Carter loses the thing he loves most.””
Daniel turned toward Lily.
And the courtroom doors opened.
May you like
But this time…
Nobody was standing outside.
