Chapter 10: My Brother Was There
I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.
Daniel stood beside Elena's car outside St. Mary's Hospital, wearing the navy jacket I'd given him for his birthday that year. His face was turned toward the driver's window. One hand rested on the roof of the vehicle.
The timestamp placed the photograph at 8:19 p.m.
Eleven minutes before Elena was supposed to leave the hospital.
Eleven minutes before the voicemail she had left me.
Eleven minutes before my life changed forever.
I looked at my father.
“Tell me this is wrong.””
He didn't answer.
I turned toward Detective Bennett.
“Where is my brother?””
“Your brother is being interviewed by another investigator.””
“Is he under arrest?””
“Not at this time.””
I picked up the photograph.
“Then I want to speak to him.””
Detective Bennett's expression hardened.
“You will not interfere with the investigation.””
“I'm not trying to interfere. He's my brother.””
“And that is precisely why you shouldn't be the person questioning him.””
I wanted to argue, but she was right.
I had spent four years believing Daniel was the one person who had helped me survive Elena's death. Now I had to consider the possibility that he had known more than he'd admitted—or worse, that he'd been involved in the events that killed her.
My father sank back into his chair.
“I told you he was there,” he whispered.
I turned on him.
“No, you told me he took money from Peter. You told me he gave Peter information. You never told me he was at the hospital that night.””
“I didn't know he was there until I saw the photograph.””
“You knew about the danger. You knew Peter was planning something. You knew Elena was frightened. And you let us bury her without telling us anything.””
My father flinched.
“I was afraid.””
“I'm tired of hearing that.””
I walked out before I said something I couldn't take back.
In the hallway, I called Rachel.
She answered immediately.
“Marcus? What's happening?””
“Is Maya with you?””
“Yes. She's drawing at the kitchen table. Why?””
“Keep her there. Don't let anyone take her anywhere unless it's me or you.””
Rachel's voice sharpened.
“What's happened?””
“I can't explain yet. Just promise me you'll keep her safe.””
“I promise.””
I hung up and leaned against the wall.
My daughter had already lost one parent. She'd been struck by the woman who claimed to love her. Now the people connected to her mother's death seemed to include nearly every adult she'd trusted.
I couldn't let her lose the last safe place she had.
An hour later, Detective Bennett allowed me to speak with Daniel in a monitored interview room.
He was sitting at a metal table when I entered. His jacket lay folded beside him. His eyes were red, and he looked as though he hadn't slept in days.
He stood when he saw me.
“Marcus.””
I remained near the door.
“Why were you at the hospital that night?””
Daniel looked down.
“I went to see Elena.””
“Why?””
“She called me earlier that afternoon. She said she needed to tell me something important.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
“She had found proof that Peter was using Dad's accounts to move money. She believed Vanessa was helping him.””
I stared at him.
“And you didn't tell me?””
“She asked me not to.””
“You keep saying that. Everyone asked you not to tell me, and you obeyed them while my wife was dying.””
Daniel gripped the edge of the table.
“I went to the hospital because I wanted to convince her to go to the police with me. I was going to tell them about the loan and the information I'd given Peter.””
“But you didn't.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because when I arrived, Vanessa was already there.””
My stomach tightened.
“What was she doing?””
“She was arguing with Elena near the parking garage. I couldn't hear everything, but Elena kept saying, 'You promised me nobody would get hurt.''”
I remembered Patricia's photographs.
Vanessa outside the garage.
The plastic container in her hand.
The warning Elena had written.
“What happened next?””
“Vanessa left. Elena came out a few minutes later. She looked frightened. I walked over to her car, and she told me to stay away from her.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew I'd accepted Peter's money.””
Daniel's voice broke.
“She said I had helped him find her. She said she couldn't trust me anymore.””
I felt the old anger rise again.
“Was she wrong?””
“No.””
He wiped his face.
“I tried to explain that I hadn't known what Peter was planning. She wouldn't listen. She got into the car and drove away.””
“And you let her?””
“I couldn't stop her.””
“Did you follow her?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I felt as though the room had tilted.
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid Peter would hurt her. I got into my truck and followed her onto Route 16.””
“What happened on the road?””
Daniel's hands began to shake.
“I saw Peter's car behind her. He was driving too close, flashing his headlights. Elena was trying to get away from him.””
“And then?””
“I lost sight of them around the bend near the old bridge.””
He stopped.
I waited.
“Daniel.””
He looked up.
“When I reached the next curve, Elena's car had already crashed.””
My throat tightened.
“You saw the accident?””
“I saw the car against the barrier. I stopped and ran toward her, but another vehicle had pulled over. A man was already calling emergency services.””
“Was Peter there?””
Daniel nodded.
“He was standing near his car. When he saw me, he told me to leave.””
“And you did?””
Daniel began to cry.
“He said if I stayed, he'd tell the police I had been following Elena because I wanted her dead. He said he'd show them the money he'd given me. He said he'd destroy my life.””
“So you left my wife dying on the road?””
“I didn't know she was dying!””
“You saw her car wrecked against a barrier!””
“I panicked!””
He struck the table with his palm.
“I have lived with that moment every day for four years, Marcus! I hear the crash when I close my eyes. I see her headlights.
I see Peter standing there. I know I should have stayed. I know I should have told the police everything.””
His voice collapsed.
“But I was a coward.””
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I asked the question I had been dreading.
“Did you see Peter touch her car before she left the hospital?””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“What did you see?””
“He was near the driver's side. He had something in his hand. When he noticed me, he put it in his pocket.””
“And you still let her drive away?””
“I didn't know what he'd done!””
“But you suspected.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“Yes.””
I stepped away from the table.
I wanted to hit him. I wanted to grab him by the shoulders and demand that he undo the last four years. I wanted to hear him say that there had been some mistake, that he had stayed with Elena, that he had called an ambulance and told the police everything.
Instead, I saw the frightened man who had followed our sister-in-law into the darkness and then fled when the truth became dangerous.
“Did you tell the police any of this before today?””
“No.””
I nodded slowly.
“Then you'll tell them now.””
“Marcus, please—”
“You'll tell them everything. The money, the garage, the hospital, the road. Every detail.””
“I will.””
“And you won't contact Maya.””
His face crumpled.
“I love that little girl.””
“Then you should have thought about her before you let everyone lie to her about her mother.””
I turned toward the door.
Behind me, Daniel spoke once more.
“Marcus, there's something I haven't told you.””
I stopped.
He swallowed hard.
“Peter didn't just follow Elena that night. He called someone before the crash.””
I turned around.
“Who?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“I heard him say the name.””
“Whose name?””
May you like
He took a shaking breath.
“Vanessa's.””
