Chapter 12: The Secret Behind the Second Phone
My father denied sending the message.
He denied it so quickly that I almost believed him.
“I never wrote that,” he said, sitting across from Detective Bennett in the station's interview room.
“I swear to you.””
The detective placed the printed message on the table.
“Your account was accessed from a device registered to you.””
“I had several devices. Peter knew my passwords.””
“Did you give him access?””
My father hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he was helping me manage financial records. I thought I could trust him.””
I let out a bitter laugh.
“Everyone trusted Peter.””
My father looked at me.
“I know.””
“No, you don't. You trusted him with money. Vanessa trusted him with her secrets.
Daniel trusted him with his business. And Elena trusted the people around her enough to believe they wouldn't hurt her.””
My father lowered his head.
Detective Bennett waited until I was quiet.
“Mr. Hale, did you know Maya had been taken to the garage before Elena's death?””
He looked up sharply.
“What?””
“Your granddaughter told us she was there with Vanessa. She remembers seeing Peter and hearing a conversation about Elena.””
My father went pale.
“I knew Vanessa sometimes took Maya to meet Peter. I didn't know she had taken her there that day.””
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
“Because I didn't know it mattered.””
I stared at him.
“Everything matters now.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Marcus, please understand. I was trying to keep my family together.””
“You helped tear it apart.””
He closed his eyes.
For a moment, I felt a flicker of pity.
Then I remembered the empty casket, the years of grief, and the little girl upstairs who had been frightened into silence.
The pity disappeared.
Detective Bennett opened another folder.
“We've identified the second device. It was a prepaid phone purchased four years ago. The account was activated using identification associated with Vanessa's former business.””
“Where is the phone now?”” I asked.
“Unknown. But the account contains several recovered messages between Vanessa and Peter.””
She turned the folder toward us.
One message was dated the morning of Elena's death.
*VANESSA: She knows about the records.*
*PETER: Then we move tonight.*
*VANESSA: What about the girl?*
*PETER: Keep her away from the garage.*
My hands began to shake.
Another message followed.
*VANESSA: She was there yesterday. She heard us.*
*PETER: Then make sure she doesn't tell Marcus.*
I looked up.
“They knew Maya had overheard them.””
“Yes,” Detective Bennett said.
“We're still recovering the full message history.””
“Then why did Vanessa hit her at the birthday party?””
The detective paused.
“That may have been connected to the recording your daughter made. But we don't know what Vanessa believed Maya had captured.””
I thought about the way Vanessa had lunged for the phone.
The terror in her eyes.
The words she'd screamed.
Don't play it.
She hadn't been frightened of an eight-year-old's tantrum.
She'd been frightened of the truth.
Detective Bennett continued.
“We've also located a former employee of Peter's who says he was paid to inspect Elena's vehicle before the accident. He claims the work was supposed to be minor.””
“What does that mean?””
“He says Peter instructed him to make the car unreliable, not to cause a crash. We're verifying his account and looking for physical evidence.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“Can you prove Vanessa was involved?””
“Her messages, the photographs, and the recording support that possibility. We need corroboration before making an arrest.””
I left the station with my father's statement still echoing in my mind.
He had known Vanessa took Maya to the garage.
He had known Peter had access to his accounts.
He had known Elena was frightened.
And he had done nothing.
By the time I reached home, Rachel had prepared dinner. Maya sat at the table, arranging pieces of pasta into little circles while her aunt pretended not to notice.
I sat beside my daughter.
“How are you feeling?””
She shrugged.
“Okay.””
“Are you sure?””
She nodded, then whispered, “Daddy, if I tell the police everything, will they take me away?””
My heart broke.
I took her hand.
“No. You're staying with me. Nobody is taking you anywhere.””
“Even if Vanessa says I'm lying?””
“Even then.””
Maya looked at me for a long moment.
Then she asked, “Can we visit Mommy tomorrow?””
I swallowed.
“Yes, sweetheart. We can visit Mommy.””
She nodded and returned to her pasta.
That night, after Maya went to bed, I sat alone in the living room and listened to Elena's final voicemail.
Her voice was warm and ordinary.
She reminded me to buy milk. She told me Maya wanted pancakes. She said she loved me.
Then came the sound of a door closing.
And a man's voice.
She's here.
I replayed it until I could hear nothing else.
At 11:42 p.m., my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
“Marcus Hale?””
The voice was male, rough and hurried.
“Who's this?””
“My name is Steven Miller. I worked for Peter Lawson.””
I sat up.
“What do you want?””
“I heard the police are reopening Elena's case.””
“How do you know that?””
“Because someone came looking for me yesterday. They told me to keep my mouth shut.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
“I don't know her name. But she said she was your wife.””
Vanessa.
I stood and walked toward the window.
“What did she want?””
“She wanted to know whether I'd told the police about the car.””
“What did you tell her?””
“Nothing. I didn't have to. She already knew what I was going to say.””
My pulse quickened.
“What did you do to Elena's car?””
“I didn't cause the crash,” he said quickly.
“I swear. Peter paid me to make a repair that would fail under certain conditions. He told me it was supposed to scare her.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did Vanessa know?””
“Yes.””
The answer came without hesitation.
“How?””
“She was there when Peter gave me the instructions. She asked whether the car would still be safe to drive.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“And what did you tell her?””
“That it should be fine if the vehicle was inspected before the next trip.””
Silence followed.
Then Steven whispered, “But she asked me to leave one thing out.””
“What?””
“She wanted the warning light disconnected so Elena wouldn't know there was a problem.””
My stomach twisted.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
“Because I have a daughter. She's eight years old, too. I couldn't sleep after I heard what happened to your little girl.””
He gave me an address and agreed to meet Detective Bennett the following morning.
Before ending the call, he said one more thing.
“There's something else you should know about Vanessa.””
I waited.
“She wasn't the person who first came up with the plan.””
“Who was?””
Steven took a shaky breath.
“Peter told me the idea came from someone who knew Elena personally. Someone who knew exactly how to make her take that road.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who?””
He whispered a name.
“Daniel Hale.””
I stood frozen in the dark living room.
My brother had admitted following Elena.
He had admitted seeing Peter near her car.
He had admitted taking money.
But if Steven was telling the truth, Daniel had done more than remain silent.
May you like
He might have helped arrange the entire night.
And the next morning, Detective Bennett called to tell me that Daniel had disappeared.
