Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew the Road

Detective Bennett played the recovered garage recording in a secure interview room the following morning.

The sound was rough, interrupted by static and the occasional metallic click. But the voices were clear enough to recognize.

Peter spoke first.

“You said she'd be alone.””

Vanessa answered, “She was supposed to be.””

“Then why was Daniel there?””

“He must have followed her.””

“You told me he'd stay out of it.””

“I told him nothing.””

A chair scraped across the floor.

Peter lowered his voice.

“What did you do to the car?””

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Then she said, “I did what you asked.””

My stomach tightened.

Detective Bennett paused the recording.

“Mr. Hale, I need you to understand that this is an incomplete recording. We don't know what happened before or after this exchange.””

I stared at the screen.

“What did she mean by that?””

“We're investigating.””

“Did she tamper with Elena's car?””

“We haven't established that.””

I pointed at the transcript.

“She admitted doing what Peter asked.””

“She admitted something. We need to establish exactly what.””

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I forced myself to sit still.

Detective Bennett continued the recording.

Peter's voice returned.

“You were supposed to make sure she couldn't reach the police.””

Vanessa answered, “I told you I could frighten her into backing down. I never agreed to this.””

“You agreed to help me.””

“I agreed to get the documents.””

“And you did.””

A rustling sound followed.

Then Vanessa spoke again.

“Where's the envelope?””

Peter laughed.

“Safe.””

“You promised me I'd never have to worry about Elena again.””

“You won't.””

The recording ended with a sharp click.

I sat motionless.

Detective Bennett closed the laptop.

“We've obtained a warrant for Vanessa's phone records and financial accounts. We also have investigators examining the original vehicle evidence, although much of it was lost or disposed of during the initial investigation.””

“Can you arrest her?””

“Not on this recording alone.””

I stared at her.

“What more do you need?””

“Proof of what she did, proof of what she intended, and evidence connecting her actions to the crash.””

She leaned forward.

“Mr. Hale, I know you're angry. But if we move too quickly and the case collapses, the people responsible may never face consequences.””

I understood her reasoning.

I hated it.

When I left the station, I found Daniel waiting outside.

He stood beside his truck with his hands in his pockets.

“Did you listen to it?”” he asked.

“Yes.””

“I'm sorry.””

I walked past him.

He followed.

“Marcus, I know you don't want to hear this, but I think Vanessa was the one who put Peter up to it.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“She hated Elena. She was jealous of her.””

“Jealous?””

Daniel nodded.

“Vanessa wanted the life you had with Elena. She wanted the house, the money, the family. She thought that if Elena disappeared, she'd eventually have everything.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you tell me this before?””

“Because I didn't know how far it went. I saw them arguing, but I thought it was about the business.””

“You saw Vanessa arguing with Elena at the hospital?””

“Yes.””

“And you still let Elena drive away?””

Daniel looked down.

“I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“You need to stop using that word as if it absolves you.””

He flinched.

I left him standing beside his truck.

At home, Rachel was waiting in the living room. Maya sat beside her, holding a stuffed rabbit against her chest.

The moment I entered, Maya ran to me.

“Daddy!””

I knelt and caught her in my arms.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

“Did you find out what happened to Mommy?””

I looked at Rachel.

She gave me a small, encouraging nod.

I held Maya close.

“We found some new information. The police are looking into it.””

“Was Vanessa bad?””

I took a breath.

“Vanessa did things that were wrong. Very wrong. But the police still need to prove exactly what happened.””

Maya looked down at her rabbit.

“Will she come back?””

“Not to this house. Not unless we decide it's safe, and right now it isn't.””

She nodded, but her lower lip trembled.

“Can I tell you something?””

“Anything.””

She reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was a drawing.

A little girl stood beside a car. A woman with long brown hair stood on the other side. Between them was a tall man with a red shirt.

I recognized the shirt.

Peter had worn one in several of the photographs.

I sat down with Maya.

“Sweetheart, when did you draw this?””

“Yesterday.””

“Why?””

She rubbed the edge of the paper with her thumb.

“Because I remembered something.””

My heart began to pound.

“What did you remember?””

Maya glanced toward Rachel, then back at me.

“When Mommy died, I was at Grandma's house. But before that, I went with Vanessa to the garage.””

I stared at her.

“What garage?””

“The one where she kept the red car.””

My mouth went dry.

“What did you see there?””

Maya looked frightened.

“Vanessa told me not to tell you.””

I placed my hands gently on her shoulders.

“You're not in trouble. You can tell me anything.””

She swallowed.

“Vanessa took me there the day before Mommy died. She said we were going to surprise you. But Peter was there, and they were arguing.””

“What were they arguing about?””

Maya squeezed the rabbit.

“Peter said Mommy wouldn't stop asking questions. Vanessa said she had a plan.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What plan?””

Maya began to cry.

“She said Mommy would be gone soon, and then you wouldn't have to worry about her anymore.””

I pulled my daughter into my arms.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I gently asked, “Did you see anything else?””

Maya nodded against my shoulder.

“Vanessa gave Peter something in a little plastic bottle. He put it in his pocket.””

I closed my eyes.

The photograph of Vanessa outside the garage flashed through my mind.

The container in her hand.

The recording.

The beneficiary documents.

The years of lies.

I held Maya tighter.

“Thank you for telling me.””

She pulled back.

“Are you mad at me?””

“No, sweetheart. Never.””

“Because I didn't tell you before?””

I shook my head.

“You were a little girl, and someone you trusted told you to keep a frightening secret. That was not your fault.””

Rachel wiped tears from her cheeks.

I called Detective Bennett immediately.

She arrived within the hour and spoke with Maya in a quiet room with Rachel present. She asked careful, open-ended questions and allowed Maya to describe what she remembered without suggesting answers.

Afterward, she pulled me aside.

“Your daughter's statement gives us a new lead. We'll need to verify the details, but the container she described may be significant.””

“Can you find it?””

“We're searching the property records and the garage inventory.””

She paused.

“There's something else. We recovered a partial message from Vanessa's old phone backup. It was sent to Peter the evening before Elena's death.””

She showed me a photograph of the message.

*The girl saw us. Make sure she remembers nothing.*

My stomach dropped.

“Maya?””

“We don't know who the message refers to yet.””

I stared at the screen.

Then Detective Bennett added, “The message was sent from a phone registered to Vanessa, but the account was accessed from a second device.””

“Whose device?””

May you like

She looked at me.

“Your father's.””
